Teachers to be allowed guns in Tennessee schools

Divisions in the United States over gun control will be amplified in the run up to November's presidential election. That has been particularly stark in the state of Tennessee. A year ago a shooting at a school in the state capital Nashville that left three nine-year-olds dead sparked protests in the legislative building.
Democrat representative Justin Jones, megaphone in hand, backed the protestors' calls for tighter controls and was then expelled.
This week in Tennessee a gun law was passed, but not one that makes it more difficult to carry weapons.

Americas answer to violence is always more violence. The mouthpiece says they only offer training to suitable teachers, is this to be offered as part of new teacher training and if so who will pay for it. ? How will teacher candidates be selected in the future, like the police perhaps who prefer candidates with a military background. 😮

  • @paulstevens7528

It is a voluntary program for teachers. If the teacher is interested in carrying a gun, the teacher has to buy their own gun, pay for their own ammo, pay for the training, pay for the background checks, pay for the mental health screening, and pay the processing fees, all out of the teacher's own pocket. If the teacher doesn't want to do that, they don't have to pay for any of it and they won't be carrying a gun. If 5% of teachers apply for the training, that will be far more applicants than anybody on either side of the issue has been expecting, and the bill sponsor has stated that he expects less than half of the applicants to be able to pass the training requirements, background checks, and mental health screening. And off the top of my head, I can remember having two teachers who were not only former military, but were also combat veterans. One taught Geography, while the other taught US History.

It seems unlikely that in six months there will be any teachers that have completed the training and screening process to carry a gun. Just setting up an appointment for the first step may take some time, and the course that is the majority of the training requirement still has to be finalized by the Dept of Safety, so you have to keep the bureaucratic delays in mind. The mental health screening process is going to copied from the process that police departments use when selecting police officers to be assigned to schools as armed security, so the criteria for that is already laid out, but the department pays for that screening, while teachers are supposed to pay for the process they go through, meaning that somebody has to determine how they are going to be doing the billing for a process that had previously been deducted from a government budget, but now has to be presented to an individual as an itemized bill and money collected from that individual.

The only teachers that will be armed, are those that volunteer to take the training, submit to the background checks and mental screening, and get approval from the school principal, chief administrator of their school district, and their police chief. As recently as the 1980s, Tennessee high school students were allowed to have guns in their vehicles in the student parking lot, because it was accepted that some of them would be hunting before or after school. That ended in 1990, when Congress passed the federal "gun-free school zones act". Did we have more school shootings before that federal ban on guns at schools was passed, or more school shootings after it was passed?

@@alexanderangelo7284 Firearms technology has evolved? The AR-15, which is repeatedly claimed to be one of the most deadly guns used by mass shooters in the US, is a 1950s design. There have been some improvements in ammunition performance, but really only in the "premium" brands that are sold to people who aren't concerned about the cost. For anybody not wanting to pay higher prices for ammunition, the improvements from the 1980s are fairly small. If anything, there is a move toward weaker calibers of ammunition, in order to make the guns more compact and lighter. Gun manufacturers are still working with the same physics that they had to work with in the 1980s.

Or is this just that it is permissible under the law. Essentially, do teachers have the right to say, no thanks, I'm not carrying a gun in school, and where do these teachers stand legally? Could the school authorities say to a teacher, Well if you're unwilling to carry a firearm which we we require you to do as as part of your job, then you're in breach of your contract, so then, we're firing you! Is this scenario an actual possibility now?

Teachers have to apply for the training and screening, if they want to carry a gun. If they have no interest in carrying a gun, then they simply have no obligation to even apply for the training. If the teacher wants to carry a gun, applies for and completes the training, then passes the background checks and mental health screening, they still have to get permission from their school principal, and the school principal is under no obligation to give the teacher permission. If they get permission from the principal, the teacher then has to get permission from the chief administrator for their school district, and the chief administrator is under no obligation to give the teacher permission. If the teacher gets through all of that, with all the passing grades and permissions needed up to that point, they still have to get permission from the head of their local police department (police chief in the cities, or sheriff in the rural counties), and there is no obligation for that person to give them permission. That is why there are so many people shaking their heads in dismay over the people who know nothing of the requirements that are being placed on getting approval for a teacher to be armed but keep making claims about how teachers will now be shooting students every time they have a bad day. If a teacher has no interest in carrying a gun, we do not want them carrying a gun, because the people that cause the worst problems with guns - other than criminals for obvious reasons - tend to be the people who are carrying a gun only because it is expected to be part of their job. If you want to find examples of this in Tennessee, just look at armed guards, where you find no shortage of people who will answer the question of why they applied for a job as an armed guard, by telling you that an armed guard is paid more than an unarmed guard.

That was banned by US federal law in 1990 - the "gun-free school zones act". Prior to that, it was accepted that some Tennessee high school students would have guns in their vehicles in the student parking lots, for hunting before or after school. Tennessee universities also had on-campus gun ranges where students could take classes in marksmanship. The classes that I took at the on-campus range during my first year, were partially paid for by the US military, meaning that by signing documents stating that I had registered for the military draft and was not a conscientious objector, I did not have to pay for the ammo that was used. All of that ended with that 1990 law that was supposed to end the problem of school shootings.

It definitely evident that depending upon the news media outlets the impact on story delivering can be positive with regards to Representative Mr. Jones who is pushing for responsible comprehensive legislation that will benefit all of the Tennessee constituency. It is evident that limiting speaking times on legislation or not allowing those duly elected officials no speaking time at all seems and is deemed problematic and insensitive especially if you repeatedly target the Afrikan American Representatives. For the news outlets that label them troubled are adding fuels to the flame of injustices

Jones is apparently having some trouble with his campaign for re-election, due to questions being raised about whether or not he got enough signatures from registered voters in his district to even have his name on the ballot. It would not be the first time one of his campaigns failed because he couldn't even come up with 25 signatures of people who both lived in the district he was running in and had registered to vote in that district. Members of his own party in the state legislature have been grumbling about him. He recently created some controversy by using a slur to describe a member of the opposing party while he was on the floor of the legislature. When asked by a reporter whether he thought it was appropriate to use that language in that situation, Jones replied that he was being honest. Members of his party remember that earlier this year, Jones had a staff member of one of their own party members suspended, for "being honest" when she talked to Jones in a hallway outside the legislative offices.

Only six or seven counties in Tennessee still send democrats to the state legislature. We still remember how bad things were when democrats had the majority in the state legislature. One Tennessee democrat even picked up an extra charge in a federal investigation, by threatening to kill the FBI agent that was recording him accepting a bribe.

Jones could go back to California, where the state gun laws match what he wants. He moved to Nashville from California, then decided a fairly short time later that he wanted to run for Congress to represent Tennessee. After that campaign failed before it even really got going, he picked a Nashville district with a history of low voter turnout, the member of the state legislature from that district leaving the state for another job, and the other political party not even running a candidate in that election. He won, then started doing everything he could to draw media attention to himself, so his future election campaigns would not involve people asking who he was. Members of his own party in the Tennessee legislature have recently been saying that he isn't doing anything to help the problem but is instead making it more difficult for their party to get anything done in the state legislature.
