Inside school where teachers carry guns

While the nation debates whether teachers should carry guns to protect students from armed intruders, the question is already settled in one Texas school district, where educators have had firearms on campus for years. CNN's Ed Lavandera reports.

So by what you are saying, school shootings are a norm to america, which really isn't a good thing. Also, what if a teacher goes rogue, along with other teachers, and orchestrate a coinciding school shooting, that could happen at anytime. I have a question. What kills people in gun related deaths? The gun. And what is available to the public? Guns. And if school shootings are increasing at an alarming rate, wouldn't it be reasonable and obvious to ban guns?

Yes I agree, there should be some form of protection, but giving them to teachers who already have a stressful job, and taking a life???? No. This can cause more shootings as it is more accessible to students and the teacher! Even when a person does come to cause harm, most likely have superior equipment and such. Teachers are humans, you can't rely on them to take on the job of going head-to-head with a highly-equipped professional meaning harm, even if he is so evil, teachers are humans and might not even want to take the life.

It is extremely stressful to have to even arm yourself with a gun, nevertheless to kill someone. Teachers are there to teach, not to protect his students, how can a firearm protected go against a highly-equipped professional. It can be, because teachers should only teacher, they happen to forget to lock up the gun, they get under stress and mess up concealing it, and one mistake puts all that pressure on the teacher. Not only that, if they snap or something, they have access to a weapon, might not be common but can happen.

We were having a decent argument and you choose to insult??? wow, insults don't get stuff done. I don't think you got my point, it is very stressful to have to own a gun and keep it safe from others when it gets closer to the students, if you make one mistake, either with concealing it or properly keeping it away from the students. Not only that but how will we know that the teacher knows exactly what to do? and that his fear or emotion won't interfere with someone who is completely superior in equipment and training. No matter how hard you train a teacher, You can't do it enough to before it interferes with teaching. I'm sorry but arming teachers for me just doesn't work, maybe trained officials on ground yes, but this issue just came up, we are still trying to solve it.

Because assault weapon is a made up term that politicians and the media use to fool people who don't know anything about guns into feeling safe if they ban my hunting rifle. The AR15 is used to kill MAYBE 50 people a year. Meanwhile, there are about 8,000 handgun murders a year. As far as school shootings, the same body count can be had with any shotgun or handgun. Virginia Tech seen 32 people killed with a 9mm and a 22lr handgun. The 22 handgun only held 10 rounds. The 9mm only 15 rounds. Still 5 fewer rounds than 1 magazine in an AR15, yet 17 people dies here and 32 dies at Virginia Tech. Fort Hood had 13 killed by 1 man with 1 handgun. So why ban an AR15? To make know-nothings feel better? I don't think so.

ANd MORE weapons seems to be the answer every time a pharmacy is robbed. They hire an armed security guard and the robberies stop. Court houses have armed guards. No mass shootings there. NRA conventions have armed people there. No mass shootings there. Gun shows have armed people. No mass shootings there. Museums have armed guards. No mass shootings there. State houses have armed guards. No mass shootings there. Armored trucks seem to think the answer is more weapons. They do make the driver and the money hauler carry more guns than they would if they took your advice and remained unarmed. What the hell is wrong with you people? You want the kids left defenseless because you're not use to hearing that there are guns in a school. Even though there use to be guns at every school. Back then, there were no mass shootings at schools.

What am I supposed to do when a shooter comes in my building say please mean man don’t shoot. I conceal carry legally every day but I have to leave my gun in the car every day. I would pay for training classes out of my miserable pay check to protect your child. Instead I’m supposed to hope that Mr. Police man get to YOUR school before YOUR PRECIOUS CHILD IS MURDERED! Yet when it comes to children's safety we proudly proclaim they are not protected by posting inane "gun free zone" signs. It is so basic that it leads one to believe that the anti-gun crowds want dead children.

salmon - so you have the power to un-invent gunpowder? If larger, faster, stronger person comes at you with a knife or club you can defend yourself? Before firearms the world was controlled by the biggest baddest warrior, that was life before firearms. Less guns does not mean less death. The murder rates in Europe have not improved since they started to ban weapons. In many cases they have gotten worse. Guns actually save lives in the US, between 500,000 to 2.5 million times a year with only 2% actually involve discharging the weapon. Before you buy into the unicorn filled fantasy world of no guns maybe you should clear out your bias and learn the facts. www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/jlpp/Vol30_No2_KatesMauseronline.pdf kzread.info/dash/bejne/X3uEt7t7k6vfhMY.html&lc=z22tsfe43kyqij32dacdp43bdksmysnujunxknoygilw03c010c.1522327383431912&feature=em-comments reason.com/blog/2018/04/20/cdc-provides-more-evidence-that-plenty-o

As a former high school student IN the Atlanta public school system I can confidently say our resource officers never once tried to get to know us or form a relationship with us. The teachers are the ones who truly feel emotionally attached to us and quote on quote love us and I would much rather trust them in saving my life over a resource officer who has no idea who I am. Of course the officers care about us but they are no way as emotionally connected to the students as the teachers that bond with us every single day. I would feel much safer if teachers were able to have a concealed weapons not only because of the fact that they have that emotional attachment to us, but also because they are with us every minute of the day and will protect us in need of action.

As scary as it might seem to some, if you logically think about it, it's good to have some teachers to be armed. But for those individuals, I think they should be evaluated on their competence and mental stability every 6 ~ 12 months. It's good that they have at least some form of training every year. If an incident does occur, it's good to know that there will be adults that have firearms to defend the students and other staff members in the school. Having a sign in the front of the school informing that there are some staff members that is armed. It's definitely a deterrent for anyone brazen enough to think that trespassing into a school with the intention of harming/killing people. However, another alternative is to hire armed security guards that are trained, and go through re-evaluation/mental health assessment every 6 ~ 12 months. If they go that route, teachers will not bear the burden of having to defend the school if there's an incident. Firearms are a scary thing, but you cannot let that keep you from a potential shooting incident; especially these days when unfortunately it's becoming more common and measures are not being put into place to prevent them (well not often enough IMO) and instead it's more of a reaction situation even though in schools they go through things like fire drills, terrorist attack drills, etc.

polishtheturd mickelson, there are always the outliers, in the student and teacher populations. All teachers that I know are brilliant caring and highly dedicated to their students. But there are bad teachers that exist and appear in the news assaulting their students, cussing them out, mentally and physically abusing them and eventually sometimes being arrested...I would like a system that would ALSO PREVENT a gun being in that type of person's hand, mentally unbalanced students and teachers. I think class and school size cause this social friction, overcrowding schools.

There is a school in my home town which used to be plagued with criminals who brought in guns, knifes, etc. and used them on people they were beefing with. Dozens of students were killed inside the school in one year. So the school decided to add metal detectors and place a few cops around the building along with some responsible armed staff. Since then there has never been another person shot or stabbed in the school because it is hard to get a weapon in the school and on the rare occasions when someone has sneaked their weapon in the cops or staff put a stop to it before anything happens. This is proof that responsible citizens with guns can and will stop criminals.

I taught science in public school for 30 years and then spent 10 more years teaching in the nursing department at the local technical college because I was an Army medic - I finally retired back in December of 20017. In all my career, I've never had to deal with an armed intruder, but I can imagine how helpless I'd be if one came into my classroom. If I was asked to carry a weapon, I would, but I can guarantee you that know one but me, the principal and department head would know that I was carrying - I dang sure wouldn't flaunt it. Obviously no one knows how'd they react if they were placed in a situation where they had to defend themselves, their colleagues and their students from an armed intruder, but being armed, trained and confident, would still be better than facing an armed intruder when you were not armed - maybe I could throw a book at the bad guy - NOT!

As as college student at a school that allows for students to concealed carry, I feel 10000000% safer knowing there are law abiding citizens with firearms on my classes. Guns are a tool for self defense. As we saw in Florida, security personnel and police generally don’t have the fastest response time. If there is ever an active shooter at my campus, the nearest police station is 5-10 miles away. They won’t be there instantly with a task force to stop the threat in seconds. In terms of the teachers, he’ll yeah let them carry. The proposal is just that... a proposal to allow teachers that want to carry to carry. They don’t want to force untrained and uncomfortable employees to carry handguns, they want the ones that want to carry to have the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to carry. If one of my professors that is an avid shooter and concealed carries outside of school wants to carry in class and protect her students, then HELL YEAH. Provide additional training to the teachers and make them undergo specific accuracy and firing under stress tests. That’s just my stance. If you have a response besides “fuck you” I’d love to have a real intelligent conversation about it.

During the parkland shooting, less deaths would have occurred if Aaron, Scott or Christopher had a firearm. These where all three teachers that went towards the building or were already in it to protect the students. They were absolutely defenceless. What can you do other than wait until the police turn up or the gun fire stops? You have to rely on the shooter stopping or being shot dead. There is no defence. One thing I learned from self defence videos is that no one is coming to save you, even if you have rang the police you have only got yourself and a firearm would be 100% helpful in not only making you confident and safe but becoming an equalizer against a threat. Security doesn't matter, the shooter will shoot them dead like they will anyone in their line of sight. Firearms are not the issue, do they magically fly into a building and start pressing the trigger or does an actual human do it?

Arming teachers is a great idea because we can all see that the police force takes time to think before they act and d urging that time, the shooter is in the building massacreing people. If teachers are armed the shooter will no longer focus on shooting innocent people but try to find out who is shooting at them and protect themselves. This is the greatest country on earth that comes up with some of the greatest solutions in society, it is also a super stubborn nation and that is why it is so hard to actually put those solutions into affect.

I'm actually on the gun control side, but I need to pokes holes in this one since making metal detector checkpoints means redesigning the schools. Many school would have to be rebuilt to make this work. Then, you get into the problem that schools already feel like prison to a lot of kids, and this would make it worse. It sounds stupid I know but this would make kids feel more unsafe than the conceal carry option even if it actually made them more safe. On the other hand I am worried about an increase in teachers shooting kids if the conceal carry thing was put in place.

@stfducky489 "database that may not have finger print or dna, to find a name" That's easy, microchip ID at birth. :-) Joking aside, I've had many public school teachers in my life I would not trust with a gun, people who seemed to hate their job, students and their life. The type I wouldn't be surprised if the were involved in a murder suicide. But, the more I think about it, odds are a teacher like that would be more likely to murder their peers, like other staff at the school than students they already have ample control over. Still I did some math and while 30% of american's claim to own guns, and 95% own a car, yearly total deaths per year are almost the same. That means a gun owner 3.5 times more likely to be involved in a human death than a car owner, and I already think car death is needlessly high. So, I have some serious concerns about increasing the number of gun owners. My favorite option A would be total disarmament, buyback programs, checkpoints, raids, immigration control. I know it's more expensive, but it's a short purge that free future generations from this problem and responcibility. My second option that I would support but don't like would be to make owning and training with a gun mandatory. Like jury duty to have everyone required by law to have and train with a firearm unless they can make a case for why they should be excused for the responsibility. Now, there's a problem with the second option in that it would drive mass murderers to more extremes like setting traps since they know most people are armed, and then we'd be living in a country with bomb sniffing dogs everywhere.

You do realize that most mass shooters don't end up living past the attack?. They either commit suicide or are killed by police. It's not like they do it because they didn't have anything else to do that day, and thought it would be a good way to spend the afternoon. They are prepared to die, so the presence of guns won't matter. There was an armed officer at the school in Florida, and the shooter had no way of knowing that him and other first responders would wait outside during the shooting, before the attack. But it didn't stop him. But now you expect that teachers will not only be brave enough to face off against a heavily armed attacker, but be calm enough to effectively use that weapon, and not accidentally kill innocent students. And going to the range once a week or month, isn't going to mean crap, when the target is firing back.

Wrong. The school wasn't a gun free zone. There was an armed officer at the school, and the shooter knew it. There was also an armed security officer at the Pulse nightclub, that actually exchanged fire with the shooter, when he first entered the club. But that didn't stop him from going onto kill several dozen innocent people. Gorka on Fox, said that if the teachers were armed, they could have just been shooting in the general direction of the shooter. So instead of one school shooter, Fox wants there to be several, with students getting caught in the crossfire. Idiocy at it's finest.

when i was a bit younger i had quite a different opinion about this but now i actually agree that teachers should carry guns. i would feel alot safer if every teacher carried. like whats the chance that your teacher is gonna pull a gun on you. besides its a lot better to arm teachers than the plan we have now for armed invaders... pile up in the corer to become easier targets for the shooter.

Until it happens no one knows how they will cope when faced with a person carrying semi-automatic gun. It also depends where the gun is and how fast the "good guy" with gun reacts. If the person with a gun is a student or ex student won't they know which teacher is armed? and then plan any shooting around that knowledge. When the police arrived how do they know who the good guys with a gun are?

  • @SkorpioVenom

    @SkorpioVenom

    6 жыл бұрын

You're right, nobody knows how they will cope. But it's better to be prepared to defend the students than to let them become target practice. Also you say "semi-automatic gun" as if there's some easily accessible alternative. Pretty much every gun you encounter is semi, full auto's require mountains of paperwork, taxes, and licensing to even obtain. When you have multiple armed teachers, it doesn't matter if their aim is good or bad. In an empty hallway with one target and 5 people shooting at him, hes going to get hit. The point of concealed carry is that only the administration knows who the armed teachers are. Plus in the event of a shooting, they're most likely going to go looking for him rather than wait. It would also make sense that the guns are kept in something like a safe unless they are necessary, so no risk of a student getting a hold of it. Its pretty easy to pick out who the teachers are in a school. There will also be multiple staff members to inform the police of who the shooter is. Do you think they just walk into these situations blind and start shooting everything that moves?

3:38 Conversation. Ask this lady..... Now imagine you have the ability to see into the future by 1 minute. So you see a school shooting about to happen in 60 second starting in Mrs. Jones home room. If YOU WANT..you can magically appear and give Mrs. Jones a gun and magically fill her head with 2 years of training 1 minute before the shooting starts in her class...or you can say "I'm not going to do that because Mrs. Jones should just be focusing on teaching only so the shooter is going to enter your room, but you guys just need to wait for trained law enforcement". Would she really do that? Here is one question I would love to ask each person that has been in a shooting...if someone could have instantly trained you and handed you a gun 30 seconds before your shooting began...would you have taken it or refused the training and the firearm?

The key to remember is that we DO NOT want teachers to be Law Enforcement!!! What we need is for Teacher to be trained and equipped to handle holding/ hopefull scare off a shooter for 7-8 minutes until law enforcement actually arrives. We are not training them for drug bust, traffic stops, domestic violence, etc. Just techniques and tools on how to apply pressure back towards a shooter to prolong their survival time until law enforcement arrives. I mean I'm a UFC fan. I will NEVER be able to stand and fight with those guys and not get slaughtered. I couldn't learn what it takes to be an all around fighter at this stage in life....but....if you spend the next two years teaching me JUST how to defend a round house kick...I bet I can be pretty dam effective at ONLY having to defend a round house kick. I could do a descent job at that. That to me is what is being said...let's not make teachers LAW ENOFROCEMENT/ complete UFC fighters. Let's teach a few of them how to just defend a round house kick and survive it for 7-8 minutes.

Open Carry School: A School in a state that fulfils its open carry dreams “Beretta” shouted her mum, “Get DOWN here! You don’t want to be late for your first day at Open Carry School”. Beretta flew down the steps clutching her bag of ammo. “MUM! I simply don’t know what to take!” Her Mum shook her head slowly,. “Honey, we decided on the MP5SD3…We bought it last week specially” Berettas eyes flared. “It’s so retro now, when You and Dad were at Open Carry School you used them! There will be boys there with M4A2’s with Picatinny rails and they won’t even notice me with a SMG” The bus started along the road, Beretta dashed as fast as she could to the stop…”I hate you!” she sobbed. At the school gates she wiped away the tears and watched as the kids hung out. Boys with Ithaca 10 gauge shotguns and SPAS15’s jeered at a down-town kid with his SKS. The Posers strutted around dangling their Barret 50’s from the straps nonchalantly. Beretta took a deep breath and headed in to her first class. “SIT DOWN! “ Shouted a fully camouflaged teacher, in his 40s and wearing a NRA hat. “My name is Mr. Carbine and this is your first class in situational awareness. Today we are going to learn HOW we carry guns and why.” He looked about… ”YOU Girl. Stand up!” Beretta stood up, face red. “NAME?” “Beretta Ninetytooeff” “OK. Now walk as if you are going shopping!” Beretta took a few steps. “WRONG!!!” The teacher snapped. “SIT DOWN!” He took a deep sigh. “If you are shopping, or in class or a cinema or pretty much anywhere, you have the second amendment right to bear arms. It’s something this state fought for many years against those who would deny us that right. This is why you are able to come to Open Carry School. Now what use is that SMG?” Beretta flushed again “It was my parents….” Everyone laughed. “NO! Not the type! The MP5SD3 is a fine weapon. What use is it on your back? Imagine the scenario. You are in a shopping mall when an anti-gun nut appears with a pointed stick. He can walk right up to you and stab you with it. What use is your gun now? What if the King of England arrived round the grocery aisle ..? You need your gun in your hands and loaded. An unloaded gun is no more use than a club. “ Mr Carbine wrote that on the board and the Kids repeated it An unloaded gun is no more use than a club They sang. And it takes a good 5 seconds to get that SMG readied from your back. You Hold it readied in your hands, cocked and MOVE TACTICALLY” The class filed out tactically dodging from door to door to their next lesson. Guns charged and safety off. MP5K’s, FN FALs,, Stens,, Thompsons, M1A1’s,M16s, Desert Eagles, and the Rich Kids M134 Minigun with his crony carrying his ammo The Next lesson was Field stripping then after break it was Home Reloading using a wide range of loads. Every kid was learning fast to have their gun up at all times, scrutinizing the faces of their peers in case one of them was the King of England or some psychotic anti-gun nut. At Lunch Beretta was reloading her magazines ready for the range in the afternoon when a cool looking Boy walked up. Staring at her down his M4’s sights he had her pretty nose targeted with his laser sight. “ Hi! You’re New!” he said. “ “Yeah…I’m Beretta” She said “ I’m Moss. Moss Berg” said the boy shyly and switched off his laser sight and lowered his rifle a fraction. “Umm, you wanna hang?” “Sure! Who are we hanging? There are no Blacks in this state anymore!” “No! I mean…hang out?” said Moss “Sure! Said Bretty Suddenly in the crowded playground, Beretta saw a kid. He was spotty, pasty, and scowling. He looked evil personified. He was walking along normally, not tactically, but Berettas heart leaped into her mouth. HE DIDN'T HAVE A GUN. “LOOK OUT! “She Screamed “ANTI GUN NUT!”. The whole playground looked around them , searching for the person without the gun. Tom Son, one of the popular boys saw him first and as he had been moving tactically, snapped his M1911A1 up to a weaver stance and double tapped the antigunner. The shots rang out and something amazing, terrible and completely unpredictable happened. The hundreds of packed kids all carrying loaded fully automatic weapons moving tactically and with weapons up and twitching all actually fired at each other. In 30 years of Open Carry school there had never been even a single Negligent Discharge, but the sound of the M1911 suddenly cause the kids to open fire on fully automatic at the nearest perceived threat. Berretta lay in Critical Condition, Moss stood over her. 784 casualties within 10 minutes. It was unbelievable. “Oh Bretty, please pull through” sobbed Moss. I brought you this…”He put on the bed a little .22 S&W Revolver wrapped in a pink ribbon. “ I just don’t know how that could have happened. Maybe we didn’t have enough guns….that’s the only explanation” Beretta opened her eyes. “Don’t worry Moss. I will pull through, and then You and Me are going to tell the world the dangers of Anti-Gun Laws…..Together….

Heres the thing, is the teachers are willing to put everything on the line to save the students, they dont care if they are the target as long as the kids live, every seccond a shooter spends distracted, is more time for a higher teir person to get into the scene. Hell, if someone wanted to, they could walk into a SINGLE room and do more damage in 40 seconds than any other shooter has in history. If a teacher had a gun in that scene, the shooter could get a fraction of the kills. Here in florida, our policy is if you hear gun shots, lock the door, if they get in, pelt what ever you can at the shooter to disable them, a gun will disable them instantly.
