    Hi Nick! Thank you for such informative videos, I have learned A LOT! I have a a question about the so called "outlaw" motors. My local track have a boosted class on 17.5T and everybody uses the Hobbywing Outlaw motor. They are quite fast on boosted mode but not so much in blinky. Based on your research I see that most of all these new crop of 17.5 motors have way more KV and RPM than the HW Outlaw and also the new Trinity "Punisher" motor. Is there anything special or different on the "outlaw" motors? Can I use any of your most recently tested motors (R1, SMC, Surpass etc.) for a boosted application? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

  • @nickadams5411

    @nickadams5411

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Miguel. The Outlaw motors outperform "SPEC" motors of the same wind, as they have more powerful "Mod" rotors and low resistance staor windings. It is a mystery to me why we cannot uprate the "SPEC" specifications to allow these better motors, without any increase in cost. The Outlaw motors usually have very strong magnet rotors, which results in the low KV, but a lot of torque. ESC boost makes up for the lack of RPM. Most motors can be used for Boost, but you must turn the motor endbell timing down to about 30-40 degrees, if you use a lot of boost/turbo.

  • @nickadams5411

    @nickadams5411

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Alex You can try the analyzer on 4.2V. My display is too faint to read. The amps will be about 4.5A at that voltage. With higher voltage, the KV should remain fairly consistent at 8 V, as it is the rpm/volts. The Rpm will be higher with higher voltage, but KV remains the same. Higher amps result in higher motor temperature. 6 amps is a good compromise. It will only take a small increae in timing to jump to 8 amps. So check motor temp after a run, and gear for the higher revs.

    Question for you I've just ordered one of these from yourself to get the most out of it would you suggest changing the gear ratio from what I used in a Motiv MCR and if so which way? Also do you tune motors differently for 1s and 2s use or is the overall goal the same 6A?

  • @nickadams5411

    @nickadams5411

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Justin. It is best to tune a 1S motor as a 2S, since it will draw less current at the optimum point and runs less efficient,so is prone to overheating. The Surpass has equal bottom end torque to the MCR, but a better high end rpm. So gearing the same will give the same acceleration but a higher top speed. Or you can gear with a smaller pinion (lower mm per rev) and get more acceleration and a cooler motor.

  • @nickadams5411

    Hi Jared. I believe most manufacturers rate their motors at 0 degree advance timing on the end bell. So the KV will be very low , but the same in either rotation. I have tuned, so that the advance is about 50 degrees (anti clockwise rotation). So the KV is much higher. It is more accurate to compare at a set amp draw (6 amp) as it includes the efficiency of the motor. Motors with higher KV when set the same (0degree or 6amps) will have the higher top speed , when geared correctly. I hope that helps.

  • @nickadams5411

    @nickadams5411

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi, The main reason is that the V4S has a higher top end rpm, making it useful for outdoor where the tracks tend to be bigger, with longer straights. If the indoor track had a fast long section, then the V4S would be best. Both have excellent bottom end torque fror acceleration. Most top competition motors have large cooling holes, but dust and dirt does not normally cause a problem on competition circuits, which tend to be clean.

  • @nickadams5411

    @nickadams5411

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi. Most stators are a push fit in the case sleeve, and the tightness can vary. With the latest cans with a lot of cutouts, some can be loose and just fall out. Because of this, some Manufacturers have started glueing them in. Because the loose ones rattle and buzz like a bee. Racers have often wondered where the buzzing sound was coming from. When that happens, glue the stator to the case with some epoxy or superglue.

    Hi. The stators pushed out by hand. Sometimes they are tight and are not easily removed. Sometimes they are loose (especially on some other manufacturers) . The loose ones can buzz like a bee, when running the car, which can be very annoying. In that case you will have to glue the stator to the can. Some Manufacturers now glue the stators to the can sleeve, and they cannot be removed.

    Nick, can't wait for mine to show up.. Decided to buy after watching this video. Watching you explain the design differences and comparison between the different motors really helps us folk, and thank you for this. From my personal view, there is something special about the aluminum collector and the effect it has on the motor. Watching racers last year with the R1 at my local club, those motors with the collector would pull strong all the time. Racers with an R1 where very hard to catch, even with good consistent driving with an older slower motor. I am hopeful to change the scenario this year, so much so, that I ordered three for myself and two for a fellow racer. In addition, I plan to test the new VS4's with my home made MiniPro! It will have all the same fixings as the original but without all the price! I am not a sponsored racer, but just love the hobby and the competition. The plate can short the legs on the upper sensor socket. It is easily fixed with a small piece of thin tape over the legs. Undo the 3 screws , pop off the plate, put a piece of tape (I use Sellotape) and refit the plate. I race with the Surpass V4S 17.5T. It has very fast top speed. All the best racing. Nick

One thing that doesn't seem so positive is that stock/spec vs modified is not what it use to be. Stock class was to allow people to run cheaply with a basic untimed brushed motor that was worth $15 and everyone ran the same. Now it seems people need spend more money on stock class to lighten their vehicles than people spend on modified class. Makes entry into the hobby much harder.

    Hi I would like to test the Hobbywing Bandit, just to compare with the Race Legal versions. Most Competitions only allow the legal versions: Due to extremely high-spec product, BANDIT motor isn't compliant with ROAR, IFMAR, BRCA and JMRCA rules.

    Yeah. I was thinking it probably wasn't on your to-do list since it's basically illegal in most races but hearing that you actually want to is surely nice.

    Hi Stone There is quite a difference between the V3 and V4S. Besides the cosmetic and improved cooling. The improved stator and collector has increased the top speed without compromising the low end torque. The standard V4 is more like the V3.

    Hi Nick. I wonder if you might help me with something please. I was watching your "Watkins WEM Dominators. Evolution 1960 to 1970s" and as you seem to know a lot about WEM amps I was wondering if you could tell me what the speaker is in my 1974 WEM Dominator MkIII is. Its the one with the big square lump of metal around the magnet (or is that the magnet I'm not sure?). It doesn't have a label or any info on it that I can see. I've looked around on the internet and I can see pics of it but I can't find out anything else about it, who made it etc. I'd be very grateful if you can identify it for me, thanks. My name is Nick too btw. :) Here's a pic of it ... www.chambonino.com/routework/routewk13d.jpg

    Hi That is called a Horseshoe magnet. Alnico. It is normally has a cover which hides it. Better known versions are the Celestion Blue Bulldog. Also Jensen made speakers with Horseshoe manets, as did Fisher and PJ , CTS and others. I do not know what make yours is, and doubt it was the original speaker, but who knows in those days they fitted what they could get. I need to see the cone side to maybe identify. It is a 12" size?. If the coil/ cone is good , it should be very responsive with a great tone. Have a look at this one: www.nzguitars.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30011

    Hi Nick. Thank you for replying. It looks different from the one you linked to. I took the speaker out tonight and took six pics which I've uploaded to my G+ plus page (link below). The only things I can see on it are "16Ω" and what looks like a hand written "93" both on the back of the cone. On the metal below the magnet it has the letters "PA" stamped on it. And it's a 12" speaker. Here is the link to the images (if you click on them you should be able to zoom in) ... plus.google.com/u/0/108170585332719919303/posts/ekEkuBdqFe6

    I think I've found it. On the WEM Owners Club website they say Charlie probably used Peerless speakers, amongst others, and the pictures on their site look like a good match for mine. Links below. If you enlarge the pic on the second link, it has the same markings on the speaker. wem-owners.com/cabs/drivers/peerless-drivers/ wem-owners.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/inside.jpg

    I did search around the internet, but could not find one that looked identical. Yours has a small voice coil which is okay for PA (voice) but not great for guitar, but still will deliver good tone.

    Hi Robert. I did test the Reedy S Plus motors some time ago. Thjey are good, but suffer from overheating in some races, due to the lack of air cooling slots. The exposed stator is good, but resulted in a lack of cooling holes for the windings. I would say the Surpass is better

    Hi Dennis. Not the best choice as lower rev motors such as 21.5T are easier to gear slowly. But if you set the timing on the motor to 0 degree and gear for lowest speed it will have the torque. All the best crawling. Nick
