Nice, looks and sounds much better. The belt will always make noise since it is a timing belt, but that extreme tension sound is gone. Even better that you made a video for doing this adjustment! As a side note for anyone reading this, the belt does need to be tight as compared to a chain. It should be flexible as shown here though. If it plucks like a string on an instrument it's too tight.

Hi - thanks for the video. Both my daughter's and my new Sur Rons had this issue. Her belt was so tight that there was a clicking noise coming from the bearing. I relieved the tension and I can push it in about 1/2 inch now and it is much quieter. The clicking went away too. I noticed her secondary belt was a little under the advised tension that Luna recommends and I adjusted mine down as well. Both bikes are nice and quiet now - makes riding way nicer. Neither of us ride off road so I'm not to worry about a little less tension, just smooth throttling for extra protection against slipping.

Thanks for this. I recently tightened my non o ring chain on my SR X, and I made it rather tight with only a 1/4" of play and the bike runs super fast and the torque has greatly improved. I had always been reading to keep it fairly loose, but then I stumbled upon Race Spec Sur Ron channel on YT, and he mentioned to keep the chain tight. I can honestly say the motor isn't running hot or appear to be straining at all and the ride is way better. Cheers.

In retrospect for me, I probably would have gone with the race spec guard and seat, but I can switch them out at some point if I feel the need to. Both are really functional for serious riding. Thanks for the input!

My belt was also crazy tight. Even just rolling it off, it made creeping noises. I just finished adjusting it. Hopefully it rides better and more belt longevity

Nice Video. My XX had that sound for a hot minute but seemed to go away. I suppose the belt stretched a tiny bit? I plan to get the DID chain drive when this one snaps.

Get the pro taper 3” rise bars, peg brace the float seat from Luna and toe peak defender fender, longer rear fender and Boxxer x firm spring mod and and ur set my dude. It needs a couple hundred in upgrades and it the best. If you off road a big sprocket is fun as well the Thing will be a blast I love my sur ron x I’m sad I missed out on the xx

I actually have the bars already on ( see next video😉👍🏼) and have the seat too. Waiting to put it on until I get my rear fender. Taking awhile as it’s from Australia. I’ve got a ton of other mods ready to go, just gonna beat the crap out of what’s here before I change them out. I heard the front fender (top peak) will snap off if it comes close to using all of the fork travel... sucks the rst doesn’t have a good fender use/design...

Thanks for the video... I've been messing around with the belt tension quite a bit and wondered if you had a very difficult time trying to align the motor? I did the same as you and used calipers to measure where the bolts line up on either side within the slots and find it extremely difficult. The amount of upward force on one side and downward force on the other to align the bolts makes me worry that I'm actually damaging the threads.

Just make sure you loosen those bolts up enough to freely move the motor up and down, and lock it in with the little lever by the motor cover. The screwdriver or lever will help a lot with helping provide the right amount of tension. It does take a bit of finagling, but you’ll get it

You’re welcome! I used a socket wrench with hex/Allen heads to get more torque and leverage. From the factory everything is ridiculously tight with some weird Chinese lock tite. Just go nice and slow when removing, as to not strip anything. A lot of people are too forceful and strip a lot of the parts out.

Yeah I already stripped a bolt trying to take off some hardware so I could put on the peg extenders. If you don’t mind, what kind of socket wrench and hex/allen keys are you using?

@@formehey7604 I haven’t had to yet, but when I do start wearing things out, I’ll definitely be replacing with something more robust. I’m using just an older craftsman set that my Dad got me many years ago. I did buy some more specialized tools for the Sur Ron since I bought it , so that I could easier work on it myself. I’ve got some other videos that might interest you too. I’ve been putting out quite a few, and am making another one this evening. My buddy and myself are going to go ride to the top of a mountain on the Sur Ron’s!

The belts are stupid tight from the factory! Should be snug but not guitar string tight

My bike did the same thing BUT after about 2-3 weeks I’m super confused loosing it helped a bit but I’m still getting the clicking cam anyone help out?

Yeah it definitely can be. If you’re used to a normal cable throttle on a gas bike, it’s a lot different on an electric throttle. I’ve gotten used to it, but I hear ya.

How many miles do you have on your bike? Back in 2018, I was told to just ride the bike and the belt would break in as the belt tension is calibrated from the factory. Over 10k miles and over halve of that at 72V, and I'm still on the OEM belt.

Now I probably have 150 miles on it. It was WAY too tight. I don’t think that it would’ve broken in. Not all come that tight, but it is definitely a known issue. That’s awesome that yours is still running strong!

I also have an xx which has a lot of torque, and could cause premature damage on the belt. The tension on the belt now is perfect and the bike actually performs so much better. I’ve messed with quite a few belts in my time and this one was definitely too tight. You couldn’t even push on it really. I’ve never seen a belt on anything that was that tight. Either way, it’s perfect now. Are you running the bac 8000 on your bike with the 72 v?

@@allwaysadventuring3544 I was running a BAC4000. My bike was the test mule for ERT back in the day. At the time the 8000 was considered overkill and unnecessary. Now that I don’t commute anymore, I detuned to Class 2 ebike specs and a Kaniwaba power pedal kit to be mountain bike trail compliant.

Oh ok nice. You must live in a place where it’s not frowned upon by the mtb community. Here in the PNW E bikes are mostly unwelcomed on mtb trails. Seems to be quite a few close minded purists here. There’s lots of other cool places to ride though!

My guess is that it would be your belt or a bearing. I’ve heard that both at times can make a clicking sound. Make sure your belt is not too tight. I made a video that you can watch to check. Also, jackshaft bearings when they go bad make some pretty terrible noises. These are usually the most common culprits

I was told by Luna that "wah-wah" noise was normal. It isn't. Is your drivetrain stiff, like there's a lot of friction or drag? My bike makes that wah-wah-wah-wah sound at low speeds, but it seems to go away at higher speeds. My drive-train is very stiff, but I measured the belt deflection and it's 1/8", barely. It's the inability to freewheel that concerns me the most. With that much pressure on the pulleys, what is happening to the bearings!?!?

the bike doesnt freewhel because there is pretty strong regen braking from factory. It is turned off in EP mode. so unless it still doesnt freewheel in EP mode in which case there might be an issue

@@sagesends I've been working on the issues and think I have them reasonably sorted. It wasn't regen because it happens when the bike is turned off. As near as I can tell the issue is/was a combination of: overly (by "overly" I mean WAY overly) primary belt (tightened that way by the factory), wonky, possibly overtightened, overly stiff, low-quality secondary drive chain, and the friction and magnetic resistance caused by the motor, all exacerbated by the bike being new. That SAD part is that I've been in contact with Luna about the issue and there was not a single piece of information or advice provided to me by any of the Luna employees was correct. Everything they said was wrong. Every thing. It was as if they are too busy counting their money from their exclusive, monopolistic dealership agreement to actually understand the bike enough to provide useful or accurate advice. I had to tell them what was going on.

Sounds like your bike came like mine did. Someone clued me in on the primary belt being too tight, and that solved my issue. I made a video on it and a how to. My bike works and sounds great now. Hopefully you get yours working well!

I've been going back and forth with Luna, reviewing every bit of information I get my hands on, looking at youtube videos and I've found out a few things, most of them uncomplimentary. KZread, aside from videos often being a very poor medium to disseminate information, is hit and miss. Luna, so far, has been a bucketful of "miss." Like every answer so far has been wrong. ALL of them. The belt seems to come WAY too tight, but to actually calculate proper belt tightness requires complex and ugly math. Some authoritative person only needs to make the calculation once, translate that into proper belt deflection, and now everybody knows. Seemingly no-one has done that and everyone is just guessing. Luna gave me what they pretended was a good answer, threw in some big words to obfuscate their lack of knowledge, and then said they "know a guy" that could rebuild my jack-shaft in his home and put in some different parts which would "solve" the "noise issue." Based upon my interaction so far, and upon my review of the Sur-Ron Service Manual (truly and insult to whomever reads it), I have low confidence this will work. The belt is too tight, but it isn't what's making the noise. I'm still working out what is. I am testing my theories based upon my review of information, but am hindered by my lack of experience with this machine. I have also ordered some tools and some parts. Surely there's an answer, but it seems everybody is too busy making money to pay much attention to problems. I understand business, so I know why they 're behaving this way, but I also have a strong sense of business ethics and that sense tells me that CUSTOMERS COME FIRST. Always. Not profit, not expediency, the customer. I will bet my life on that.

@@sagesends Nope. Regen isn't operating when the bike is turned off. I have found the not freewheelin' characteristic of the Sur-Ron is primarily due to cogging torque. Secondarily it comes from an inefficient and cheaply constructed drive-train. The cogging torque, while excessive, is understandable. This is a bit speculative, but in my opinion the sub-optimal drive-train is the product of a combination of technical requirements coupled with greed, dubious ethics, and undiagnosed brain damage.

A loose belt is worse than a tight one. That is a direct drive belt for the mid mount motor. It is tighten to spec at install. It will loose to proper deflection after time. A loose belt slips and breaks down faster than a tight one. Just saying.

@@raymondscott6680 some of them come too tight, it’s a fact. It’s a human putting it together. People do shit wrong occasionally. They all don’t come perfectly to spec. Look into it if you don’t believe. I don’t care if you don’t think so. I’m sure there is someone out there that will take the time to argue with you, it’s not me….I made the video to help those out who have a belt that’s too tight. It happens, and it’s good to know how to tension a belt. If you didn’t or don’t care, then don’t watch….

@@allwaysadventuring3544 well, my sur ron made the same noise out the box. I aired the tires to the proper psi. 32 psi to be exact. Rode the bike for a few miles, and the noise slowly went away. You should suggest reading the owners manual in your videos.

Damn man! Glad you got it all changed out. I guess you were going to have to do it at some point.... also upgraded parts are good piece of mind. Finding replacement parts right now for the bike is difficult too as Luna is constantly out of most everything..... hopefully people will continue to make and sell aftermarket parts!
