How to adjust belt tension | Sur-ron LBX Tutorial

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Just to clarify the tension. I was a bit vague in the video. When i say you should be able to move the belt a bit, but not a lot, I mean about 0.5 cm. My general rule is that if it makes a lot of sound, it's likely too tight. If you feel like you are scared it would jump teeth, it's too loose. That being said, tighter belts experience less sudden strong forces. This is a really short belt run, and the span of "acceptable" tension will be pretty large as it's not very prone to tearing unless you get foreign objects inside the belt/pulley teeth that wrecks it.

    Thank you for this. I just performed this adjustment. A couple notes of my own: 1) I found that I *had* to release to two upper/front bolts to allow the motor to pivot, 2) Another thing to keep in mind is you might want to make sure the two lower bolts are at the same height so that the motor pulley rotates in the same plane as the jack shaft pulley... I think this was the source of my noise.

    Mines just gone in for first service but the day before it started to make a whistling sound on de-acceleration quite high pitched , it seems to go after about 5 mins of riding , does that sound like a belt issue ? . I reported it when I dropped the bike off but feel like most places just check bolts and brakes 🤷‍♂️

    @nemistech5425

    No, it's not broken. It doesn't matter that the lever doesn't stick in place when loosened. Its only job is to stop the motor from sliding AFTER you've tightened the bolt again. Just remember to hold it up against the stop while tightening the bolt.

    That's a good video man on how to tension it I just got a primary chain 219 and my neighbor helped me install it and that little tab tensioner thing doesn't move up and down freely anymore it seems like I either got to pry it or something like that what do you recommend I do with that tab after I tension it and I want to keep it tensioned?

    I don't have this bike anymore, but i would suggest if possible to have the tab lean up towards the stop pin before tightening to have it stay in position. Not quite sure what you mean with it not moving freely

    I did this and now I get a ticking noise because the pulley on the jackshaft’s bolts rub on the frame, almost like the jackshaft isn’t aligned anymore but I never messed with the jackshaft only moved the motor…

    Wait so did you loosen the belt or tighten it? It's not clear whether this bad sound was happening because the belt was too tight or too loose.

  • @nemistech5425

    @nemistech5425

    2 жыл бұрын

    I loosened it. Sound happens if belt it tight and rubs on the sides of the pulley. Generally the sound will be worse when wet. That also means you can get the sound with the right tension, but bad alignment

    So, is the technical belt-tightness specification from the service manual "Be able to move the belt with your finger, but not a lot?" Funny. I don't remember that phrase. It must be my absolute domination of the English language stifling my interpretation of technical guides.

    Heh, i assumed that most of the people googling this problem wouldn't have belt guages, and the belt run is too short to properly get a sound for something like the gates belt drive app.

    @@nemistech5425 It's an issue. Luna referred me to your video so that I would understand what the proper belt tension is for my bike. Your description, though vague and abstract, is the sort of technical specification much earlier vehicles were built around. I'm not faulting you, I'm faulting Sur-ron corporate. I've read their service manual. It is NOT abject garbage. Some of the pages have pretty pictures, plus their address is in there, so that's useful, but nearly 97% of it is utterly useless, or worse. Some of it actively causes a form of brain damage as your neurons are forced to make connections they should never make, which decreases general and specific cognition. I still have nightmares from their picture trying to describe "runout" just so they can tell you it's "bad" if there's a lot of it.

    @@TheBsavage Hi, i totally understand your frustration, and i felt it myself when trying to do this the first time. The reality of it is that there are no official specs, and the belt is too short to do proper tensioning on without special tools like tension gauges. My video assume that you don't have this kind of tools, and despite being kinda vague, it's accurate enough. Since the belt run is this short, it doesn't really matter if it's not 100% up to spec unless you've got a new controller/battery delivering much more power. There should be a bit of play, but not so much that you risk it jumping over teeth
