Summertime Rendering Has Some Issues...

Фильм және анимация

Been watching Summer Time Rendering and I think it's pretty good, though I do have some comments about what I think could be done to make it more successful and broadly appealing, as well as the community reaction to the show I've been noticing.

    I was also put off by the fanservice. I like fanservice when it fits the tone of the show like Highschool of the Dead, Highschool DXD, or literally any comedy anime, but it felt so unfitting in a show that takes itself very seriously. The boob faceplant made me roll my eyes, but the panty shot happening no less than 5 minutes later almost made me drop the show by its first episode. Only continued watching cause of the supposed mystery element. I'm glad I didn't drop it cause I love this series now and those moments have thankfully become nonexistent as the show progresses.

    most likely the fanservice was a type of hook to keep its audience intrigued and some of it had to be kept since it was used at a much more mild extent (I can only remember like one or two shots that werr explicitly made for this but weren't a crazy big deal) though I do agree it is unnecessary for the target audience. A lot of people have the impression that it's fanservice which I don't like. That isn't the case. I think that STR would be better without it because it creates what I see as a conflict of appeals in this particular show, as I explained in the video. I love fanservice when it's put in a show that it feels appropriate for. Kill la Kill, Interspecies Reviewers, FLCL, Space Dandy and Gunbuster are all exelent examples. Shows like those either make a thematic point with their fanservice or just include enough fanservice that it feels like a central part of the appeal of the show. STR does not make any interesting points with its fanservice and it shows up little enough as to feel tacked on and not part of the appeal of the show while also showing up enough that I can't ignore it or recommend the show to people who haven't been desensitized to fanservice in anime like I have.

    Found this while looking for stuff to share with people to share with people and with the context of the whole series in retrospect, gotta say: you nailed it. The fanservice seems tonally jarring and tacked on, no matter how you feel about that sort of content in general in this show it just doesn't mesh with the other elements and seems more likely to turn off people who don't appreciate its presence than be appreciated by those who find it titillating. It's like if you were watching Twin Peaks but the absurdist humor was replaced with the lowest-grade scenes lifted from American Pie. Even if that's your jam, this stuff just isn't meshing right.

    I did actually make a video about Sonny Boy when only 2 episodes were out because I realized how good it was and saw it flying under everyone's radars: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYuWysacd9uefKg.html But there's obviously sooo much more that could be said about Sonny Boy so I just might follow up on it. Honestly, right now, I'm not sure I could put to words everything that's so great about it. I'm thinking about making just a series of short videos that each talk about one specific moment or idea in the show, that way the project would be more manageable. I really do think the show deserves a massive analytical breakdown although I haven't seen pretty much any of the videos by other KZreadrs that have been made about it, I feel like I kinda shouldn't. Like, I want to be the one to wrestle out everything I have to say about the show and how I want to say it. I have a couple other video ideas I've currently got my sights on but I highly suspect my time discussing Sonny Boy is not over

    Fan service scenes of STR are not severe or it is bearable compared to other anime, and the author actually put those scenes in the plot or in short, they actually make sense in the future or next scenes, I know that they should use other scenarios aside from those scenes, but just like I said, it's actually much better compared to other anime that just throws fan service scenes randomly, out of nowhere and out of place, additionaly as the story goes on, the fan service scenes decreases or there's nothing at all, which I felt like the author only did that, especially in the early stage of the series to attract people, because in reality we know that some people still into those kind of stuff, or some people actually just watch the show just because of those scenes (not sure but that's how I felt), nevertheless I actually like your analysis.

    I can agree that it is not as severe as other anime, but its always out of place. One moment we're chilling, the next its a funny joke or a panty shot. This is a problem that exists in all manga adaptations, not just STR, because their tone changes panel to panel. However, that doesn't excuse the fact that it hurts this series as a whole.

    I think the violence is what made me question Disney's interest in the story, but yeah, the fanservice is also very off-brand for them. I think you're right that they just weren't paying attention to what they were acquiring. Not to say I dislike STR. It's a really compelling story, that a lot of its fanservice moments distract from. I think Explanation Point broke down fanservice/nudity in anime in a very useful way, contrasting Made in Abyss with EroManga Sensei. Riko walking around topless with Reg while he tries not to get flustered shows how she doesn't see Reg as a person while he definitely feels person-like attraction to Riko. The camera focusing on a young girl's ass while she's practicing lines in front of a mirror, alone, indicates that the omniscient narrator is going on a watchlist one day. You can tell a story with fanservice if you use it right, often with a character's point of view, and not taking away their agency. Likewise, while Mio has a crush on Shinpei, he seems to think of her as a little sister, so any of her fanservice shots where she's not trying to impress Shinpei is just to titillate the audience (and whether this works probably correlates with whether they like Suguha's arc in SAO). Ushio's fanservice bothers me less, I think because it's less jarring to the story. She was in her swimsuit when she died/was copied, so that's what her Shadow wears, and for the most part I think the camera frames her normally, which helps. Her losing the suit when she thinks about it seems to be setting up one of her abilities (though, yeah, it could have just changed her surface to other clothes or an amorphous shadow blob, rather than nude). I hope the fanservice doesn't get weirder, but we're only 8/9 eps deep in a 20+ episode story. We'll see.

  • @Krossxc

    @Krossxc

    2 жыл бұрын

    I haven't seen that Explanation Point vid. I'll have to check it out. I generally don't really care how fanservice is presented in a show so long as I feel like it's contributing to the goals of the show. Made in Abyss is definitely a great example of how nudity and sexual content can do a narrative service to a show. For instance, I love that they didn't shy away from adapting the way the town punishes kids for disobeying, which is to string them up naked. It's details like that that make the setting of MIB feel so... I don't know, real I guess. I just love that the show isn't afraid to show the viewer all the bizarre and disturbing details of the world, because it's a bizarre and disturbing place, and that's what I love about it. On the flip side, I think it's perfectly fine for a show to have fanservice just for the sake of itself even if it doesn't come from the perspective of a character/does take away a character's agency. It would probably have to be a show that wasn't really going for dramatic steaks or a traditionally compelling character arcs, but I don't know. I think there's a place for trashy fanservice shows like Keijo. They aren't enjoyable in the same way as STR which is why I don't like the fanservice here. It's just a question of "is this fanservice contributing or detracting from the appeal of this show" and since every show has a different appeal, I wouldn't say there's any type of fanservice that is just outright bad. That's just me tho

    Eh you sound like a Twitter mob complaining about fanservice that doesn't even exist THAT much and you use that as an actual flaw where it's literally not Also no, the reason why people like Spy x family has nothing to do with it not having fanservice, tons of shows for example Mushoku tensei, no game no life, monogatari, and Gintama have TONS of fanservice and are extremely popular, spy x family is popular because it's good, same with STR, and like no one REALLY dislikes it because " muh fanservice " and if anything most people who talk about it lewd the Characters and don't care Also using mal reviews as an argument............................. There's also the fact that you said " i don't have issue with fanservice when it's done right, i like interspecies reviewers, completely ignoring the fact that it's an ecchi/he*tai anime ?? That's like watching a p*rn video and saying : " man, the sex scenes in this video are actually useful to the plot "

It pulls me out of the narrative because it usually doesn't match the theme of the story. Unrelated fanservice and SA rip me out of a story like having a car accident on a Sunday drive.

    Sorry, but i don't agree. I feel the author put fanservice in the beggining for two reasons: 1. To misdirect people about how dark the plot would get. You read the first chapter and you see the instances of fanservices and you get the impression is going to be a light story. 2. Again, to add levity to the plot. You can say that fanservice does not add levity, but it's common in a lot Japanese media to use fanservice to add it. You can discuss if that practice works or not, but that's another story. I think the manga has a lot of problems, expecially at the end when it fucking turns into a shonen battle final arc, but i never saw the fan service as inappropriate, as it was never done during an inappropriate time, mostly using for creating levity and misdirecting. Unless you consider fan service inappropriate period.

  • @olpert

    For a while now, I've taken the stance that when a show tells you what it's going to be, listen. So as I saw the very fist scene of Summer Time Rendering involving a tonal whiplash fanservice moment, I just never went back to see more of it. The show told me its priorities, and I listened. I learned this from Bakemonogatari. If the first sequence of your show involves weird panty shots, weird panty shots are going to be an integral part of the experience and for me that means I don't want to watch it. I can absolutely concede that Bakemonogatari had a lot of very well done storytelling and characters, but to me, the fanservice was enough of a disqualifier to just stop watching it. The same goes for Summer Time Rendering. From what I hear and what you say in this video, it seems very intriguing and well done, but I quite simply don't want to suffer through the tonal whiplash of "Look it's boobs" every few minutes to get to that quality show underneath.

I like Summer Time Rendering a lot even with its flaws because there isn't enough interesting mystical thriller anime out there. Last one I liked this much was Erased. .. "this much fanservice" you serious? They're teenagers with their minds on love, the only reason their love came second to anything is because people were in danger or dying, and even during those critical moments they still end up thinking about their relationships with each other. There's so little scenes like this in the anime; and it's done to show off plot points. Ushio losing her swimsuit? Was showing that she only had the swimsuit in her shadow storage and basically when she felt it was out of place it disappeared, it showcases a mechanic; And it seems that people are just ignoring the fact that Shinpei literally tried to use every single identifying feature of hizuru when trying to figure out her identity and he had to RESORT to mentioning her breasts because that was the identifying trait the people in the town had for her. Even when Mio flew over the edge with her panties being displayed; it isn't a typical ecchi scene where you'd have a big zoom in moment and trying to show off the curves of the character, it's instead just a matter of fact thing that happens, he doesn't even comment on it at the time and just pushes that thought to the side until it becomes a relative plot thread; and seeing as she's wearing a uniform where she would have been wearing that same thing everyday, the only change that would've happened to said uniform could've been her socks or her underwear; Which, believe it or not as an adolescent male, Shinpei is more likely to remember the latter. Feels like a weird thing to be hung up on, let alone that one guy calling someone having a nightmare and lunging forward into another as "Sexual harassment".
