    I love that channel, and have always headcanoned the stories that they tell as happening in the same universe as Hilda, for the reason that it's more horror-oriented. After all, it's a big ol' world out there, and there's bound to be creatures that aren't nearly as friendly as the ones Hilda meets and befriends (the Pine Creepers are my favorite example of this).

    Hilda has stood out as possibly my favourite cartoon since its very first season. Seldom have I seen a show so utterly captivating from second one, with a truly unique aesthetic, atmosphere and animation. The years-long hiatus between seasons shows how proper production times and budget can come into fruition for one of the most well put together pieces of media I have ever seen. I struggle to believe I'll find another show capable of making me feel like Hilda did in any near future.

    This video made me think very differently about some of the choices in Season 3 and I appreciate it a lot more now, even when I already really liked it. But in thinking about it again, I thought of a rebuttal to the points made here about the Giant Slayer. Yes, the lesson Hilda teaches the Giant Slayer is one she learned at the start of the show, but that's just it. Hilda is teaching the lessons she's learned to someone who needs them too. But this also disguises the fact that there is another, subtler lesson in the episode. Hilda fails. She tries her best, succeeds in opening the mind of the Giant Slayer, gets them working together with a giant, and it's not enough to stop the giants leaving. The big change she wanted didn't happen this time, but it doesn't mean she was wrong to try, or that she didn't have any positive effect on the world she tried to change. As a counterpoint to the movie it works very well. "You can say all the right things to the right people and still have things not work out the way you wanted." A more nuanced and grown up message for an older version of the show.

    I personally love hilda, It’s a show that’s so calming but can still be tense at times which makes the show unique. It also makes me feel at home and at ease because of the warm colours, whole atmosphere of the show and I used to live in the UK when I was a little kid so it reminds me of just the simpler times. I personally loved the all the seasons no matter the itty gritty of the problems or missed opportunities for character development because it always kept the magical world hilda was in and kept me interested with all the clear inspiration from Celtic Myths (I’m a mythology fan) so it was fun to spot the myths from the actual mythology in the show. Overall I think Hilda is a great show and anyone who’s haven’t watched it yet should give a shot. And for those people who think that it’s a kid show THINK AGAIN. Anyways I’ve written too long! Happy rewatching!

Seriously tho, I can't really think of many animated shows that are as consistently profound, atmospheric, relaxing, thrilling, adventurous and most importantly, maturely written as THIS show. While S3 was shorter and had some story shortcomings, it MORE than made up for with an amazing ending. I loved this show so so much. Season 3 wasn’t my favourite overall, and though the finale was good, I didn’t resonate with it a ton. However I’m going to contest you on the spider-frog thing. It’s been a while since I’ve seen that episode, but I don’t think it’s really “about” what the spider-frog says at the end. I think that’s a nice little moral slotted in. However I think that the greater purpose of this episode is a small nod to the fact that Joanna doesn’t remember her past, but more importantly, to show the mortality of these characters. So many of the adventures that Hilda goes through throughout the show are kind of low stakes in that she doesn’t always feel in danger. Joanna always says she’s in danger, but up to this point, there wasn’t really a moment that shows that. The deer-fox episode did it a bit, but it always felt like Hilda was safe. The spider-frog episode serves to show that she isn’t safe. The only reason Hilda and Joanna survive is because of the spider-frog’s preferences, but in any other circumstance, they would have died. I think that’s important going into the finale, as it makes the fairies more frightening. We know that these character are in serious danger, and that they can be hurt or even killed. I think it makes the rest of the season hold a lot more weight.

    i feel like the reason why this season feel mix is bcuz they try to do a best of both world kinda thing with it story driven and episodic episode. they have a really good story revolving the fairy but they cant stretch it for an entire season, so they they make some haft bake episodic like season 1-2 to fill in the run time which honestly kinda hurt the story and season as a whole

  • @Krossxc

    @Krossxc

    28 күн бұрын

    In my opinion, knowing that season 3 had its number of episodes cut down by Netflix, it seems like they wanted the fairy story to be the lingering background element that it is for the majority of this season. They just wanted there to be more episodic adventures with the non fairy characters so that they could be developed further, and the season would overall feel substantive even without the fairy subplot.

  • @paulvillerius848
    @paulvillerius848Ай бұрын

    I'll be honest, I found the Season 3 finale kind of frustrating. It wasn't just, like you said, that Johanna felt kind of stagnant, it was that she wasn't invested in the mystery or affected by it until the end. Hilda was invested in the mystery, but after the reveal, she's the one who needs to pull Johanna away. That isn't a flaw in of itself, having Hilda being the one to realize what's up is actually very fitting progression, but in regards to Johanna's role I don't think they executed it right. As a result, I wasn't invested in the reveal, and the expository backstory kind of slammed the brakes on my enjoyment. I really wish they had something eating away at Johanna throughout the season to presage the reveal, or fleshed out her parents more as characters. Of course, this is all based off of memory from a first-time viewing. I definitely want to give the season another chance, and I'm planning to watch it with my Mom sometime. I do appreciate how the endgame is thematically sound, but I still found it to be emotionally unsatisfying.

  • @Krossxc

    I personally feel like there were hints at Johanna's past (or lack there of) eating away at her, just that they were too far in the background, which lead to what we both observed about her character arc. Glad I'm not the only to have criticisms of this aspect of the season.

    Well I feel like the ending was excellent, and although it would be fun to have Johanna's parents tag along and come to the human world, I do think the whole found family theme is enhanced by leaving them where they are. I mean maybe that's what they were going for but I still feel like that message would land better if it were being delivered by a character with any sort of humanization whatsoever. As is, the Fairy Eater is more akin to a force of nature than a force of intent & malice. Like, we wouldn't call a tornado "evil". It just is what it is. But that doesn't mean we should tolerate it's existence, because the effect it has on human life is entirely negative. That's kinda how I see the Fairy Eater. Like, it would feel wierd for a tornado to run through my town and almost kill me and my family, and then have it stop and go "y'know I may be dangerous but I'm not evil". I'd be like "... dude, you just destroyed my town..." idk that's just me
