A friend of mine made a Transformers cosplay out of glass fiber and HOOOO BOY, worst idea they ever had. Even with all their precautions their skin was covered in rashes, small red dots and thin cuts - both from making the costume and wearing it. Doctors confirmed they still have small glass shards stuck in their skin that itch even now so many years later. Lesson learned: Do NOT mess with glass fiber and keep it far away from any and all body parts!

​@@edvinkaziunas5847 It was either Starscream or Megatron from the original Transformers series. They were part of a group cosplaying as various Decepticons so it's a bit difficult to recall who was in what robot suit. 🤣

Personally I see it's biggest uses being in the medical field. Being able to instantly seal a wound or apply a cast over a broken area. Especially if you can quickly mix it with other medication would be amazing! Even more so since it wouldn't need to last long. Just long enough. Honestly it kinda sounds like Medi-Gel from the Mass Effect games where you kinda just slap it on and it does it's thing. Or to put it another way it is basically advanced super glue. Since super glue was originally made to quickly seal wounds in the field.

We already have clotting compounds, splints, and cyanoacrylate. between those 3 things we have rapid first aid solutions for minor cuts, broken bones, and fairly significant wounds.

Spraying this to patch an open wound is a really bad idea because the fiber in it has really high chances of infections along with the solvent being bad for your skin

Ironically, when the spray on clothes’s inspiration: silly string came on the scene, it was originally supposed to make spray on casts, sadly, it was not strong enough and was used in the kid loving mess we know of today.

I’m genuinely surprised MatPat went this entire vid without even mentioning the spray on shoes from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!

I think that the idea of the fashion show using Fabrican is more about showing everyone a magic trick than showing everyone the practicality of the spray on dress. I mean, that’s what fashion shows do. They are not about everyone having widespread unique clothing; they are about everyone being amazed at the clothing. This is why Fabrican is the perfect idea for a fashion show. It was never really about everyone using it, it was about showing how advanced the technology is.

I imagine the glass and metal shards were probably meant for repair spray. Like got a rusted spot on a chain or wall? Patch it up. Got a small crack in a window, spray to close it up long enough to get replacement.

I really think that this could have some serious medical uses. As far as clothes go, I’m not sure I’m sold on the clothes aspect of things. But casts, bandages, those types of things, that I could really get behind for this product.

i’m currently in college majoring in textile engineering and yes nonwoven fabrics are actually already used in the medical field! (face masks are actually made out of nonwoven fabrics) however most nonwoven materials require complex equipment to make so having this portable and easy to use method would be great for the medical field :)

As a fashion major it's fun finally seeing this stuff talked about somewhere on the mainstream. Like yes, this is exactly what I'd be covering as well if I worked on style theory. I would also be making a video about why it's so hard to make color changing clothes a reality, and why we've had the same basic weight and common silhouette for so long even with the constantly increasing number of attempts to integrate technology into clothing. Let me know if you need a temp script writer. Haha

​@@ericguzman9927 there's some honestly fascinating theories behind a spray on first aid deal, but the way to test it is kinda dubious so we probably won't get beyond video game logic for it. Basically like being able to regenerate cells or expedite the process for natural regeneration, as well as spray on bandages that function as a second skin while the injury heals.

This whole episode kept making me think of Flint Lockwood's spray-on shoes in Cloudy with a chance of meatballs.

I feel like the useability for this is way better for medical than fashion. Can you imagine being able to get rid of every bandage that's individually packaged in plastic just so it can stay sterile?

When I did a report on spray-on fabrics 10 years ago (2013) in my Science, Technology, and Society class, they predicted that was going to be widely used in 10 years. I was particularly excited with the medical use cases. They aren't quite there yet but I guess they've been successful recently with getting their product noticed by the general public.

(Note: not a patent lawyer but I've had to read a few) It's notable that not *all* of the fibers listed may be suitable for use in fashion *or* intended for use in the future. A lot of times patents will try to include as much as they can to prevent any competitors from coming out with a slightly similar product, so they probably included all the kinds of "fibers" they thought they could get away with.

I really like and am hoping for more videos like this, not necessarily centered around one theory but just a general deep dive into something interesting, keep it up guys!❤

Honestly, The first thing that came to my mind with this tech is how much easier mock-ups will be. Before you can make the final garment, you need a mock-up with the measurements of the wearer. This can allow faster and possibly cheaper customized clothing to be available to the everyday person.

This reminds me of the Iris van Herpen's show a few years ago that was focused on an entire line of 3-d printed designs. They had a show where they had Gwendoline Christie (yes, THE Brienne of Tarth) lying to the side of the runway during the entire show with the 3d printer live frabricating a dress onto her directly. It was... fascinating.

This could be used in hybrid with traditional clothing as a form of "stitching". Leave a bit more material, merge it with Fabrican, you can always undo it and resize, because you left more material. OR, you could fill in the space where you lack material, because you left too little for some reason

I was pretty impressed with the strength/athleticism Ms Hadid showed, being able to hold her arms out in that awkward semi-balletic position for 20 minutes! Ouch!! Made my shoulders ache just looking at it... Wonder if she had to practice a lot before hand, or whether a model's photographic posing experience was sufficient?

This seems way more promising in regards to every other application except clothing

This is actually an incredible invention, with so many uses. I'm very impressed and super curious to see where this goes

@@robertpfeiff Yeah but a lot of the limitations that keep it from making great clothing are kind of fundemental to the material and process. So I don't think practical clothing will ever be a real application. Might be useful for protoryping clothing though since that stuff doens't need to last.

Soap is soap, they both do the job equally well, the only difference might be the fact that bar soaps generally have less random chemicals in them than liquid soaps which might be better for the skin depending on what kind of skin you have.

This just remined me of the "spray on shoes" from cloudy with a change of meatballs Love these vids.

I could see this being a future thing for space travelers that have to spend 20-50+ years in a shuttle traveling to different planets, where a robotic system 3D prints a predesigned outfit onto your body by spinning in a circle and simply spraying it on. Considering you can just re-use the material, it would save A LOT on space. In comparison to the current ideas (outfits that suction fit onto the body, the huge bulky space suits we have now, etc), it is also a lot more practical as soon as you get a few more decades worth of advancements into it. I also think that it would be better if you made something that was like a cardboard cut out of what you wanted the outfit to look like, first, and then sprayed it onto that in order to get looser clothing designs. Since the cut-outs could be pre-cut to order and easily assembled, or even just 1-time measured cuts that you can re-use forever (or until you gain/lose a pant size) it would be a way to let the less crafty individuals use the product. It wouldn't be that difficult to add zippers to the product either, since zippers are actually stitched in bands. If you made the band stick to the product, but not the metal, you could simply wrap the zipper where you want it and then spray on top of it. by the end of the day, it's research, research, research.

I love it when we get a sneak peek at what's to come. It honestly makes me pause and think about how a parachute dress would work...

I was looking through your channels through film theory and I noticed this. The first thought that came to mind was “when was this channel made?!” I am still confused on how i never heard of it.

The biggest question to me is how are you supposed to take it off? On top of this, how's it gonna react with things like sweat? That said, Fabrican does have potential and is prolly best for things like building and repairs.

As someone with a military background, the fact that Kevlar could be used is extremely interesting, imagine walking into a potentially hostile environment in what seems like normal clothes to then almost be bullet proof, I know it’s no where near that currently but it could have amazing potential

Remember though these are just Kevlar figers being stuck together with glue. Actual Kevlar relies on that weeve to absorbe the impact. So spray on Kevlar would likely be fairly useless as even if the figers are strong a bullet will just rip right through the polymer bonds. Unless they also invent a bullet proof Polymer. But that's an entire other invention.

I mean, Silly string was supposed to be a faster way to make casts for broken bones back in 1972, A United States Patent was issued to Leonard A. Fish, an inventor, and Robert P. Cox, a chemist, for a "foamable resinous composition." The partners initially wanted to create a can of aerosol that one would be able to spray on a broken/sprained leg or arm and use as an instant cast.

A high-tech spray tan machine machine would cover design and application. A body mold and adjustable size increase should help with size issues cost and breathability would be the only real issue. Would be great for underwater military or recreational diving

Another theory idea: the scene from Legally Blonde where Warner says “you’re gonna ruin your shoes…” and she gives in and gets in the car with him. How many steps would it take to ruin shoes? What does “ruin” imply? Lots of room to play with here.

Back in 2010 I ran "CVT Weekly News" a weekly News/Talk Show out of California's Central Valley. We reached out to Fabrican's creators to try to feature them in a segment, and while we had an art model (and friend of mine) from the local college up the street all lined up for a live demonstration of the product, sadly we never heard back. It looks like the product hasn't really improved since then, so that may easily be why.

When I saw the spray on clothing title I legit thought you meant something like the spray-on shoes from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Crazy that something similar actually exists. Absolutely bonkers!

fabric can could be ink of a Fabric Printer similar to a 3d printer or be a second stage after a 3d printer. Like you scan your body to get your measurements, select comfort level of clothes, a frame is then printed out of a stronger fabric binding then the spray is applied, and for those with more money color can be added or printed on the product.

I'm gonna take credit for this theory when I asked for a theory about flint lockwoods spry on shoes about a month ago

When you started talking about the patent and how it is small fibers essentially in solvent and glue, I just thought of those fiber mascaras that were popular a few years ago to give you "fake lash effects" but then the fibers ended up coming off into your eyes and causing issues and irritation. I think I'll keep getting dressed the normal way, thanks. I feel like this might have better application in the medical/industrial fields than in the fashion field.

I demand an episode about the movie Wanted! I need to know how plausible is the idea of destiny telling us our future by the means of fabric!

If this will be the future or not, i don't know. I think its amazing to see so many creative minds to just try stuff atleast its entertaining

How about an episode about beards? Facts, myths and general misconceptions about genetics, diet, products that claim to help get you grow the perfect beard and in the end determining the theoretical optimal way to actually do so.

FR it was my first thought when i clicked on the video

Love the new channel so far and everything on it, if you need any suggestions for episodes there might be some interesting findings with body hair like does shaving have any benefits at all or is it just beauty standards? What is up with womens clothes being so revealing and only suited for a few times when mens clothes seem to last forever? Period products! Why womens fashion changes so much but the suit hasn’t changed much? Different hair styles would be interesting to hear about.

One way to address most of these issues is to come up with a base fibrous "shirt" that is insoluble and can have the material sprayed on to fill in the holes. Imagine it like the frame to a car. You buy the frame, and then you fill in the holes with painted panels. The problem would be sizing limitations. The fibrous "frame" would have to be stretchy enough to be form fitting, but not have such rebound that it would cut off circulation of deform the shirt after it's formed and taken off. Then, if you wanna change the shirt, you could melt it down and start over with either different colors, or apply the dissolved material to a new "frame".

Just curious if we could get a video about which chest binding method is the most affective as well as the safest?

I am super curious about the medical applications of spray on bandages. We already have liquid bandage which is mostly useless for durability, but something that is a cross between liquid and fabric adhesive band-aids? Feels like that could be on the shelves and in my frist-aid kit any day 😮

dont use it as a bandaid thats a great way to get fibers stuck in the injury and cause the fibers to need to be surgically removed

As soon as you announced a 4th channel I thought of fashion theory and this episode 😂 and here it is! I’m not disappointed at all!!! Thank you MatPat!!!

It's a proof of concept which is nice. This could have another use, revitalizing worn-out clothes. If clothes have enough life they can be donated. If it's too worn out, it will be disposed of. What if you could use the cloth spray to renew old clothes. Maybe a 3D print like device that can make a new garmet out of a well loved item.

Being able to spray on a patch to seal a wound is incredible. I see deaths from bleeding out being avoided way more often. Even a decent sized open wound would be subdued

Not only do we have to consider durability and breathability, we also have to consider the actual environmental cost that goes into making it as well as byproducts when you break it down. Something many "environmental" producers tend to gloss over and ignore.
