SHEIN. You’ve seen the mega brand. Maybe you’ve even worn it? But did you know they are complete and utter THIEVES? More than once they’ve stolen designs from smaller creators such as Blogilates. But do you want to know the crazy part? It’s actually LEGAL! Watch to hear full story.

Thank you to Matt, Steph and the Style Theorists team for putting this together! It was such a surprise and an honor to be on your channel. (I’m getting emotional as I write this bc your support and friendship mean so much to me.) This episode was so well researched and executed. Right now the only thing stronger than the Shein monster are the collective dollars we’re using to feed them. It’s like consumers say they want one thing (sustainability, better working conditions etc) but their spending habits tell a completely different story…so…it’s a weird, murky situation, but this story ain’t over. To be continued!

My mom is a fashion designer and having helped her get her work done I can say for a fact the designers put their all into their designs. I remember times when my mom would work nearly 3 days straight with minimal rest just to get a collection done for a show. Or times where she'd spend weeks sketching, measuring, sewing, scraping and repeating that process just to get the perfect design. So when I see Shien copying work that literally took blood sweat and tears from tens or hundreads of hours of work by small designers it really upsets me. (Seriously though it litterally takes blood, swea, and tears. Those sewing needles a brutal)

I saw this thumbnail and immediately thought “wait.. isn’t that Cassey’s skort? “ and lo and behold YEP it was! Not at all shocking. Usually Shein knocks off old/discontinued/ niche or unknown /foreign brands so nobody calls them out. I remember like last year they knocked off a Ma*rs (Japanese deadstock Agejo Gyaru) dress that was super popular within the Gal community literally EXACTLY. Same fabric, design, flairs, bows, straps, colors, print… it was so blatant that if you zoomed in you could literally SEE the ma*rs logo WHERE IT WAS ON THE OG DRESS. Not blurred or anything. It was crazy. It sucks that this happened to Cassey though! I absolutely adore her work and have bought from her brand a ton. I’ve been boycotting Shein because of their LONG list of issues. I’d absolutely love to see a style theory video on them absolutely tearing them to shreds though!
We need a website that has all the designers that Shein copies so we know directly where to go instead!
I remember seeing this girl talk about this and I've been boycotting ever since. Edit: I wanted to add that it was rlly nice for Matpat to stand up for his friend(s) and also other fashion designers. Nice job!

This is where my wife seems to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. We're poor, and because of her body shape it's really hard to find clothes that fit, let alone clothes that she can feel cute and confident in. And there's very little places where she can find what she's looking for, for a price that we can actually afford. We've tried looking around. We know about how they steal, we know how the clothes aren't the best material, but when it's between wearing bland illfitting clothes from walmart that makes her feel like a potato, and Shein where she likes how she looks, we're going to pick that one. Honey doesn't always provide the discounts that we need that could bring the clothes into our budget. But if anyone has any alternatives, I'm all ears. or eyes, since i'm reading.

Thrifting might be an option for you. But don’t feel evil for doing what you have to do. There’s only so much available when you have few funds
@Cruxia13
Жыл бұрын
Honestly, when times are tough there's nothing wrong with doing what you can for yourself, even if your options aren't ideal. Feeling comfortable and confident in how you look is a major boost to your self esteem, and is important for your mental health! I understand the conflict between not wanting to support Shein and also wanting to have access to clothes that make your wife feel like her best self; and it certainly seems like you've looked at alternative options, so your heart is clearly in the right place. Maybe think of it as using Shein as a stepping stone to a better place financially, at which point you'll be able to support more ethical options? And, as others have said, thrifting and goodwill might be alternative options in the meantime. If your wife has any interest in sewing, thrifting and modifying clothes just for her can also be a really rewarding hobby to pick up! I have a couple outfits made out of old recycled sheets and curtains, and even walmart's clothes can be made way better with a bit of fitting to body shape.
@theghostoftama7013

I really don’t recommend going for Shein because of the working conditions they put their workers in (and their rip-offs) but also safety. One out of every 5 of their clothing is laced with high amounts of lead that can’t be washed out. By buying these products, you have a more likely chance to be wearing clothing laced with lead in the dye that will severely impact your health. Even though you may be poor, is it worth risking your health by possibly wearing clothes covered In high amounts of lead and unsafe material? Some alternatives can just be looking at Ross, (maybe Walmart?) and other thrifting stores like everyone else suggested.

The thing that happened in the 1980's was in the US and Canada non-profits lobbied to have a lot of regulatory protections, like environmental protections and other regulations implemented. They do that to this day. It's something of an ok practice as it's not considered stealing to take something else as long as it fits Chinese Laws
I ordered clothes at shein once and I’m never doing that mistake again
2:56 But odds are that she won’t be the last either.
Definitely make a video about how bad Shein is. On top of the OSHA violations, some of Shein’s products have also been found to contain dangerous amounts of lead.
Maybe try doing a theory on Doctor Squatch to see if their soap really is superior to normal big brand soaps 0.0

You guys may have seen the “MA⚡️MA” shirts, my friend and her graphic artist came up with that design for her Shop Pink&Palm that helped fund resources for moms in crisis and Forever21 stole it first and then Shein and the rest of the world. Very sad, hers is still the best rendition, but she was so discouraged. She shut her shop down for now. She had other designs, hoping she comes back again. It’s horrible how these fast fashion brands steal everything.

*I’ve heard about all of this things going on and I’m just confused. When I ordered it said that everything was made from a different store so that’s why it takes so long to get the clothes.* *Shein is also known as a marketplace, so clothes or anything sold on their is from other shops Shein is probably just a market place to get other stores out there.* *So it has confirmed themselves their not a whole factory. But I love this as much as I love any other video done by matt.*

Here's my idea for a possible style theory: Is it actually better to dye your hair when it's dirty versus when it's clean? Bonus, does someone's hair type affect the results (e.g. thickness, texture, natural color)? I've definitely heard it a lot over the years but I'm not sure if it's true...

THIS!!! I need to know this. And are we talking about dying your hair or bleaching it?
@MoritsukiRei

In my personal experience, my hair color grabs better when it's a day unwashed. Not too greasy, but it can't have a coating of conditioner on, either. It will depend on hair type for sure, though
@crystaliia
Жыл бұрын
If you are bleaching or using dyes that are permanent and have lifting agents like ammonia you should do it on oily hair. If you are dying with products that may or may not be permanent but do not have any harsh chemicals, like manic panic or directions, you need clean hair. Thickness, texture, natural hair colour and whether your hair is dyed or not also play a significant role for how long and what products you need for bleaching.

1:43 fun fact I actually watch biogases and when I grow old enough, I might but one or 2 of her shops clothes
I first noticed this when I still shopped at Shein and the strawberry dress was really popular because someone had made their own on tiktok. Suddenly it was all over Shein.
Also, I've seen a lot of allegations of their clothes containing high amounts of lead. Amounts that aren't safe to be near, much less wear. Another great reason to look elsewhere for clothes

@@darladay4766 I believe that lead is used in the dye, so washing it out isn't possible. The articles I found say that about 1 out of 5 clothing items tested positive for lead and other chemicals that you probably shouldn't have a lot of exposure to.

@@renyanoel7413 that would be lots of leaching. I wasn't aware of how bad dyes were until after I leaned about things like bamboo being dumped in chemicals to make them soft enough for fabric, and that they don't all wash out. I love how I just got my first shein ad on this very video 😂
I'm so happy you covered this issue, I follow her on KZread and was sad to see her ideas get stolen.
Theory/Discussion Topics: (1) Fashion has become more of a form of social control than merely a way to cover people's bodies. Been like that for centuries, but when did it start? Why is it so effective? And is there a way to combat it? (2) Fashion's obsession with romanticizing crimes against women. Touch on the recurring themes of murder/assault shown at fashion shows (especially at older ones, persistent marketing of hypersexualized clothing towards younger audiences, and even collections that glorify sexual crimes against younger women.
