Hey Theorists, how short are your pants? Are they as short as Pedro Pascal’s shorts at the 2023 Met Gala? Or as long as Rihanna’s flowing Valentino Haute Couture gown? Well take a good look because your answer may determine whether we’re actually in an economic recession or time of prosperity. But, wait… how is that possible? Your shorts can’t ACTUALLY predict the future, can they? Hang on to those short shorts because we’re about to find out!

I was switching between pants for work and gym shorts at home. I still had to go to work since I'm an 'essential worker' which means I'm risking my life to go to work (according to politicians and media) but got paid way less than if I had been an 'unessential worker' where I'd get to sit on my arse at home and collect my base pay plus $600 instead of just my base pay (sorry, everytime I'm reminded of that fact it makes just a wee bit irritated). At home I usually wear gym shorts because my condo (which is more of an apartment) gets way to hot (boiler heat in the winter that I have no control over and AC is too expensive, assuming the ancient wall mount unit works at all, to run in the summer).

Can you do a video about ballgowns? I’m curious if they was any LORE behind wearing big fluffy dress at a ball. Note: this was a question I just made up, so idk if there is anything about ballgown dresses. So you don’t have to try this idea

Ever since you did your "washing your legs" episode, I've been curious: what does conditioner actually do and do we actually need to use it? Answer me, MatPat! Forgot to add: Also, which is better? Washing conditioner and shampoo separately? Or using 2 in 1?

i think there are far too many types of hair to field test this and to come to an absolute yes or no answer; however, a scientific look on what conditioner does--or should be doing for different hair types--would be a great watch

I thought conditioner reintroduced clean moisture to your hair after you washed it clean with shampoo. Kind of like lotion but for your hair
@gabrielabatista6016
Жыл бұрын
As far as I remember, conditioner has two functions: 1- adding moisture to your hair after you stripped all the oils with the shampoo (so, conditioner is particularly important if you have dry hair, but not really necessary if you're like me with that extra oily hair). 2- balance the static of your hair to remove frizz (which makes it tangle less and makes it easier to comb/brush). There are different types of conditioners with other functions, though. From curl intensifiers to straighteners, detangling and colour toner ones to pair with colour toner shampoos, among others; there are many different types of conditioners with specific functions.
@hyzmarie
Жыл бұрын
Well, I have curly hair, and o know that certain conditioners can make curly hair curlier
Also, I’m pretty sure if Pedro Pascal actually bought that outfit, it’d be in the THOUSANDS of dollars. Most of these Met Gala looks are loaners or custom designs anyway, so it’s pretty unlikely you could base an economic theory on it.
This is the kind of content I love. Similar to Food Theory's Coffee Cannabis episode, these kinds of deep dives into fashion history blended with weird economic factoids are the literal best things ever.

The thing with the Hemline index is a common thing you can do with statistics. You can find any pattern you want to any level of precision you want as long as you're prepared to ignore enough data.
I think everyone who watches his theory videos, agrees with most of it because it ALWAYS makes sense 😂😂😂
I wrote an essay on this in 1991 and it came back in a college economics textbook in 1993. Glad to see it coming back on KZread in 2023. One of my favourite indices.

I think it would be kinda interesting to see a video (or short) on the effects of shampoo for dogs on human hair and if it’s better or worse in comparison to our main brands shampoo. It just seems like a fun idea to test and it’s a catchy concept :)
hey theorists!!! can you do a video about how to preserve your pants/jeans? im talking about the chubby rub that develops in the groin area. im not chubby, i walk a lot and my jeans degrade in about 6-8 months and are my biggest annual clothing expense. they just dont last.
@bboops23
Жыл бұрын
My two biggest tips from a former fat girl who could wear through jeans rapidly - 1. Only get jeans that are 98% cotton or more. You usually can't find 100% and probably wouldn't want it as it will hardly stretch. 2. Only wash your jeans every 10 wears or until they have substantial dirt or any smell. Between wears hang them up to air out. The higher the natural fabric content, the better they air out.

We definitely are in an increasing recession but I’m really glad you ended up saying that fashion doesn’t REALLY have a correlation to wether we’re going to have one or not.

Forget canibal crossover week we need a pedro pascal crossover week
Honestly, I just wear my clothes based on the temperature of the week. If it's hot, then it's short season for the top and the bottom. If it's cold, then that means it's reached trouser temperature and jogging bottoms.
This episode reminded me just how much it must have sucked to live through history with a phobia of buttons.
Why does Matt pat always manage to convince me on anything
7:57 Mat Pat says "Just look at the ads during this era." The picture on the screen is not an advertisement, it is a sewing pattern. The word "Simplicity" (a well known sewing pattern brand) runs down the side pf the picture.
Me who has ocd reading the title: well duh that’s what the voices in my head keep telling me, wearing this black shirt will be bad luck but if I wear it with these red socks then it will be neutral luck.
I love these "well yes, but actually no" episodes xD
Another fun fashion correlation is the one about high heels :). Apparently the better the economic condition, the higher the 👠 .
6:44 this is crazy how face of woman in strawbarry skirt look like MatPat
Honestly I’m ready for the hemlines to go back down. There is a distinct lack of fabric that covers pretty much anything in most of the stores today 🙄
That Style Theory title card made with Pedro's knees caught me really off guard 😂
that style theory logo using pedro pascal's knees will forever live in my nightmares
I appreciate the end critique of data and statistics presentation. There's a world of difference in how someone responds to hearing something's gone up by 50% and that it's risen from 2 up to 3.
these types of videos are my favorite, seeing how and why aesthetics evolve the way they do is fascinating

I love the hemline index. As a fashion history student I had to do an entire research paper on this and how effective its possible predictions could be in western countries.
I have an idea for a style theory episode: Which type of cloth is the best in terms of e.g. cost, durability, functionality, sustainability of production and waste processing,... I reckon cotton will be high on that list, but silk and natural synthetic fibres could have the leg up in some areas.
I Appreciate the conclusion. It is frustrating when things aren't cut and dry but it's even more frustrating when sources give conflicting/mis information
Please do an episode on which general camo pattern is better. MARPAT, OCP's, or hunter camo.
0:18 wait WHAT?!
I think it’s typically easier to tell by heel height. Like hem lengths, it does fall out of sync some, but it stays more consistent than hem length
What I'm curious about is - does the hemline index apply only to USA economy or does it apply globally? Or to other individual countries? ie. S.Korean youngsters have pretty short shorts/skirts. Does it correlate with their economy? Cos dressing style would differ drastically across different cultures right?
2:46 I did not need to see that

7:20 The funniest part there, if they had called themselves the "little on the nose club", they would no longer have been "on the nose" with their name.
The thing is that baggy under the knee length jorts are one of the biggest trends this summer
Halfway through the video I was thinking Matpat seems to be cherry picking examples that support his theories. Glad he acknowledged it at the end.
It lurks in the shadows, out of His spotlight, His view. He dances on the stage, weaving a web of lies. But you must venture beyond the cage, and find where It cries. Find the truth.

MatPat and Pedro would be besties change my mind
Given what I heard about zoom meetings, a lot of dudes were wearing athletic shorts or only underwear, so I would consider that to be pretty short. I personally wore athletic shorts during the shutdowns as opposed to the jeans I normally wear
girl we already in a recession
I love the history tour in this theory! To stay true to ✨science✨ though, we shouldn't forget that correlation doesn't mean causation. So even though this pattern is certainly something that strikes attention, it doesn't necessarily prove a direct connection between the shortness of clothes and economy.
Even I can verify the whole shorts thing for 2020. More often than not, I found myself often wearing shorts, mostly ones that just barely reach the knee, though the shorts s&p can also signify rising global temperatures.
I've heard about this theory before, but the one I've heard was how the taller the shoes, the worse for the economy it's fun to hear another spin on it
They actually covered this on the British panel show QI. HIghly recommend it if you haven't seen it.
It feels like it's just a history lesson 😅
Is the title a reference to the old game theory video “video games predict your future” because thats still my favorite game theory to date
