Stuck ship shuts down Suez Canal traffic

An enormous container the length of the Empire State Building remains stuck in the Suez Canal. Shipping experts believe it could take days or even weeks to free the 224,000-ton vessel that is blocking one of the world's busiest waterways.

It amazes me how clueless some people are regarding global trade. These lanes used for trading keep the world going round, any disruption has ripple effects in global economy. The US depends on the suez for trade lanes to middle east and the subcontinent, europe also depends on it for china trade. This is a very big deal. The disruption of weeks will result in a spike in prices first on the closest affected and later on consumers elsewhere because companies will pass on the charges that will recover losses. Trade is global remember that next time you complain on china dependency, its a give and take

Land is much more solid than water. Seems to me the best way to dislodge the container ship from its stuck position is to get several tractors - each with one strong metal tube firmly secured horizontally on a tractor with a rubber tire or two at the end of the metal tube that's gonna be placed against the ship. Then with all the tractors in position with their horizontal poles placed against the ship, all at once, together, ever so gently, ever so slowly, the tractors push the container ship away from shore. Also good to have the tugs assist in pulling the container ship at the same time.

I may have a solution. i am a aerospace engineer and one of the things that we deal with is fluid dynamics. use a second high power ship that can produce a large displacement by propulsion. tie the tug or second ship with the stern pointed toward the bow of the container ship. the idea is to displace the sand and earth under and beside the bulbus bow. the wash should (after some time) displace the dirt and sand. also consider placing pipes under the bow and pumping high pressure water or air under the bulbus bow to remove the vacuum between the bulbus bow and the sand. this should allow the standard tugs to create some movement with out over stressing the cargo ships hull integrity. water likes to flow along side anything stationary. so the wash should focus and remove anything that is touching the bulbus bow. Good luck and how it helps

I think if they put a cable onto the front pod and then hitch the tug on a short cable so the wake of the tug will wash the sand away from the bank and over time you can move a lot of fill. You can also lower the anchors to free up some load
