Stranded cargo ship in Suez Canal could 'take weeks' to free | DW News

Japanese media are reporting that the owner of a huge container ship blocking Egypt's Suez canal aims to free it by Saturday. But experts are warning it could take weeks. More than a hundred and fifty ships are waiting to get in to what is one of the world's most important shipping routes, with hundreds more headed its way. A prolonged suspension of traffic in the Suez will almost certainly impact global trade, which has already been hit hard by the pandemic. The Suez Canal is a choke-point for world-trade. It connects Asia and Europe and sees 30-percent of the global container-shipping-volume every day.
Dredging teams worked through the night to try to clear the canal bed around the 200,000 ton ship. The stranded Ever Given is holding up around 10 billion dollars in trade every day it is stuck.
Diggers, tugboats, dredgers and a crack team of Dutchmen known as the special forces of salvage operations have been drafted in to help. It's thought containers may have to be offloaded to lighten the vessel - though one mistake could spell disaster.
According to maritime historian Sal Mercogliano, "The bow is basically in Asia, the stern's in Africa, and the middle is in the middle of the canal. And what you can't do is take a lot of weight off the ends and put a lot of what they call a 'sagging stress' on the vessel. You could conceivably crack the hull, cause an oil spill. But worse, catastrophically fracture the vessel in half, which would close the canal for months, if not years, to salvage a vessel of that type."
150 ships are caught in the traffic jam. Each passing day piles on the pressure for global trade routes, already struggling with the coronavirus pandemic.
Those involved have warned it could be weeks before the vessel is freed. Bad news for those stuck in the world's longest maritime tailback.

No, be real this was not a failiure of a single person. Think of all of the systems present on a ship of that size? It wasn't even in a turn. That there is no explanation as to how it happened is highly suspicious of deliberate, the responsibility of a "usual suspect" with alterior motive. Supposedly it was "blown sideways by wind". You're not telling me this is the first time in history a sidewind was present in the Suez canal. Or that that ship doesn't have tools and side thrusters to compensate.

Didyk’s transworld highway/railway proposal is a good idea. A good reliable rail connection between Asia and Europe would reduce the need for shipping and a Bering strait tunnel would connect North America to Asia and Europe. Japan to Korea and Japan to Russia tunnels would also be useful. Unfortunately there is still a lot of mistrust between the major powers which prevents these sensible projects going ahead.

@@TruckTaxiMoveIt I never said that it would be impossible to unload that ship where it is stuck in the canal. The original poster I replied to implied that if they somehow loaded the ship somewhere else then it should be a trivial matter to simply unload it the same way while its stuck in the canal. He apparently doesn't understand how these container ships are normally loaded and unloaded so he thinks its something that you can easily do anywhere, which is not the case. What I pointed out to him was that its not going to be done using the normal procedure. In this special case they are going to need to get portable equipment to the site that will not be what is normally used to unload a container ship and they will need to get some really knowledgeable experts there to figure out how to do it safely and without damaging the ship and making the problem worse.

The answere to the question of "why not unload the ship?" is stunningly simple: it could break! Ship and payload are stuck and this builds up different kinds of tension through whole of the ship and the payload. These tension forces can be substantially great. If you unload the ship in it's fixed position these forces change but the ship, because it's still stuck cannot adapt enough to these changes. Then it will either deform or... break. Alas, ship and payload have to adjust by coming free as a whole. Just think of it, the weight of the payload is enormous. If that shifts... the hull plates are not strong enough to compensate for that.

I think if the canal ran thru some areas of the US it would have been looted bare and stripped down by now. Nothing would be left. It would be a mostly peacefull atmosphere for the first day or two and then the tweekers would step in and cut up whatever was left for scrap metal and wire.

You wouldn't need to put the two dams all the way at the ends of the canal. They could be placed just north and south of the ship. Then you pump water over the two dams to raise the water level only where the ship is stuck. The biggest challenge would be building the two temporary dams and then removing them afterwards.

Once the ship is afloat, secure it and pump out water from the barges. The barges will float again. Unblock the barges and take away. The ship can now move ahead as usual. It's called lockgate technique. Using dredgers and big earth movers will also do the job.

While loading in ports, that happens using cranes along the side with balancing the weight along the ship
