Thanks for giving me a little piece of “home”. I grew up in an Italian section of Brooklyn, NY. My mom used to make these every Christmas. This was her exact recipe and I was trying to find it. I knew she didn’t add milk, butter, shortening or liquor. But every time I would try to find the ingredient list…it wasn’t hers. By the way, we used to make “pencils” instead of snakes ☺️ and never did we ever overwork the dough. Otherwise it would be tough instead of light and airy! And yes a good portion didn’t make the honey bath either 😆 Merry Christmas 🎄

Dear Linda, How very special reading your message. It’s truly about the sweet memories. 💖 I love the idea of calling them pencils, my aunt Tina would say “maka mo thin le serpentelli” I can still hear her. Another of her favorite things was to say is “I sleep more now than quando I ero young” 😂🤣🤣she mixed both languages and everyone was supposed to understand her. Lol. Buon Natale and enjoy the struffoli. 🎅🏼💚🤍♥️💫🎄

I remember making these as a kid at Christmas. My family also put in roasted whole almonds. We had so much fun because my mom would blanch the raw almonds, and then my brothers and I would squeeze the peel off the nuts and squirt the nuts at each other! Then we would roast them in the oven but have to keep an eye on them so they wouldn’t burn. They were wonderful coated with the honey mixed in with the struffoli. We never used the orange and lemon peel your way. I think we used a bit of grated lemon rind in the dough.

a flood of memories came rushing back, watching this video, always had them for Christmas, and I still make them, wouldn't be Christmas without them, and how many don't make it into the honey, just as good plain:) my mom always added a splash of liquor to her honey, usually Strega, and I still do, love these traditions, thank you so much for sharing

@@alessandrasfoodislove My Grandma made them and put them right away into the foil with paper in it muffin cups. It was so festive with the sprinkles and the honey would go to the bottom of the paper a bit and we kids would love that to lick off. Also, the muffin cups kept everything nice and neat and the kids didn't poke the ring! haha! She would put them in coffee cans and put wax paper between the layers and mail them to me from her home in NY city to Ohio. Thank you so much for the detailed recipe! My Grandma had several handwritten ones and I could not tell which was the correct one (or complete on). I love watching you as you are a connection to my Italian family all gone now.

Hi Alessandra. We have made this every year at Christmas in my family. I'm 60 years old. My mom grew up in Prospect Park Brooklyn and probably learned it from her Grandma who came from Italy. I was relieved to see we still make them the same size as you. That's especially amazing considering my great grandma probably left Italy around 150 years ago.
