    Always useful to see and understand why people do things slightly differently. Even better when they can explain why they do a variation, whilst understanding why someone might do it differently. Too many of us can get hung up on chasing optimal and right/wrong ways to do something, rather than appreciating that people have different goals, preferences, training experience, etc.

    Honestly, I have not found that the “squeeze” at the top helps new weight lifters to feel the muscles. They end up tensing other muscles that really aren’t related to the movement. The first time we go through a movement, I have them go slow, and feel the movement through 5-8 reps with low weight. If they don’t feel where the muscles are working, we up the weight. And keep upping it until there is no need to guess a MMC. As long as make sure the form is good the entire time, you WILL feel the weight and the muscles if you increase it. That may be higher than the working weight (depending on where we are targeting the strength/hypertrophy line), but once they feel what the muscles should be doing, they are usually able to adjust at lower weights.

    Hi. Could you give en example of a "wrong muscle" that would be tensed by squeezing at the end ?

    @@guillaume4519Lats and front delt. Both are used to stabilize in any press movements. People, especially new lifters, think squeezing your chest means bringing your shoulders together at the top. It sounds counterintuitive to say pull your shoulders back and squeeze your chest. For years I had the issue of my lats being sore after chest day, more so than my actual chest. Took a while to learn to not let my shoulders roll forwards or let my lats over compensate

    When I was watching Dr. Mike "debut" that curl variation, he said that he likes the fact that it is low tension at the top of the rep and very high tension at the bottom. That way you could load more at the stretch position but still complete a full rep. I started a new meso and added that curl variation (amongst other, more traditional curls), and it was great. My biceps don't usually get very sore but they did after that workout!

    1: In my head I can hear Dr. Mike making so many off color comments about how important the first couple of inches are. 2: I love how you always seem to mention the squeeze. I know you get more muscle growth from the eccentric but personally the concentric is were I really feel the pump. That's where I get my mind muscle connection.

  • @guillaume4519

    @guillaume4519

    I am not sure you get more muscle with eccentric. I think you misunderstood of the eccentric. If i am correct, It allows you get a little more stimulus than the concentric alone. So it should definitly not be neglected. But it's not the movement that create the more muscle.

    Love Dr Mike, he's not real big on the contraction squeeze, he likes to focus on eccentric and stretch which is a great, fantastic way of doing it but I want the best of both worlds and do both and it works for me

    Mike has changed his repetition performance a bit. He used to do full ROM and hold at the end of the eccentric. From what I understand, he's testing his results with all this research focusing more on the stretched position and pulling back a bit from his "full ROM."

    Not as critical on the smith, because it is a lot more stable. The side to side is controlled. Smith is great for isolation and doing movement tweeks safely that you can’t on free weights. With that said, I like to train on smit like the free weights just for consistency. Standard BBell? They call it suicide grip for a reason.
