STEEL GIANTS: Mega Cranes | Full Documentary

Ғылым және технология

Higher, stronger, more robust: crane builders outperform with superlatives. Loads are getting heavier and have to be lifted to hard-to-reach places. One of the largest crane companies in Germany is the Knaack Krane company in Hamburg. The company currently has around 60 different cranes in stock, the largest of which can lift up to 750 tons. It is a long way through planning and assembly until the machine is used for the first time - the report accompanies the creation of a mega crane.

As a 45 year retired crane operator, today’s crane technology is amazing, the eighth wonder of the world compared to what I started out on. Although I have run only a 300 ton rig, only an experienced crane operator can appreciate the capabilities of today’s machines and the people responsible for the operation of them.

The crane tipping over at 1:13 might have been the one in South America which tipped over because the slave driver didn't want to waste time laying down wooden mats which the crane was supposed to spread the weight of the crane on. The log in the computer was disconnected. Like a black box in a plane ,it can be analyzed to see if the crane was overloaded. No I was wrong. It's in Italy. 27:23 they show it again. But it seems like they overrode the computer. When the computer detects something outside of the crane's operating parameters it would only allow the crane to lower the load.

More like they stole Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for Dark Knight Rises. Unless they're not making any money off of these videos, in which case, usage of this copyrighted material is a matter of "fair use" or something, they sought permission to use this music.

considering that the new 5-axle all-terrain mobile crane (Demag/Grove 550XLD_ which we just recently delivered from Massachusetts to Newfoundland & Labrador had a customs invoice value of ,U$ 1,350,000, it wouldn't surprise me that this Liebherr Crawler crane checks-in at about 3 Mio Euros (and the small Tadano probably cost about 500.000 Euros when new. That explains the hourly rates these crane-operators charge these days (in Canada a mid-size mobile crane operator charges about C$1,500/hr (calculated from/to the operator's home-terminal)

If I had to order a super expensive mega crane. I'd have it painted in some strange colour. Like extremely offensive pink, or bright neon green. Just to annoy people.

37:00 Anyone ever heard of a camera that is mounted at the top of the boom and directed by the crane operator to assist in giving first hand information where otherwise the operator can't see? Really???

probably, because the average viewer is not familiar with these components and would maybe misunderstand the meaning of the true terminology. But, I agree with you (and most of the other commenters) that the narrator definitely overdid it.

Why is everything "so called"... It's like saying "This is, supposedly, called a jib". Does the narrator not trust the person who wrote his script? "These are called outriggers.. I guess.. If you want to believe that.. I personally don't..".
