This looks really good! As an idea, maybe get some of those flickering led's and maybe a buzzer or something from an old computer or other recycled gear to make a sound like a short in the background. Then have it randomly flicker. It's a bit involved but I bet a lot of folks would like to see a bit of electronics like that. Could make for some interesting atmosphere. Just a thought. I LOVE the blaster holes!

Great panels for the cabinet. I really liked the blue lighting over the terminal block to make it look that much more set back into the panel. I have never liked using spirits to bring back over weathering; my personal technique is to dry brush a we bit with the base color to get a little more depth. While Anakin may hate sand it is essential to getting that gritty stone look on a budget.

Don't beat Neodymium magnets (05:44)! They are very brittle and split easily even if you don't them do so because of the shiny coating. Treat them gently. That rust at (10:00) looks fantastic. I spy a Wago connector (10:15), so much better than wire nuts. How many batteries do you have embedded in projects around the room? Would you not want to wire them all back to a central mains powered switch so you can turn them all on and off at once (like a room light) and don't have to keep replacing batteries? I have loads of the little USB wall-warts for a simple, cheap 5V supply.

Don't worry, I only beat the magnets enough to bend them to my will!!! The rust turned out ok, I need to work on my technique a bit more. Thank you though. I am not using batteries for the entire room. All of the props are eventually hard wired to a central power supply that I will be controlling once everything is done. The battery here is simply for demoing this part of the project. The overall project you got a glimpse of today is part of a much bigger project that will have a lot more wiring and electronics all eventually hard wired ;)

Looks awesome can't wait to see how the rest of it turns out. I have been working on my own project as of late it isn't any kind of kit bashing or model making of any kind, it's a series of stories that all connect together. I have had a lot of fun writing it, cause I have it planned out as far as what each story is about.

Love your videos! They are so well done and a pleasure to watch. (My $0.02 - a wire brush is also a great foam carving tool.)

This is EXCELLENT. I've been wanting to make a "Docking Bay 94" sign out of foam for my living room, and was wondering what was the best way to simulate that sandy rock texture. Very helpful! Thanks!

Amazing as always. Can't wait to see the finished build. Can I suggest hitting the blaster holes with some spray paint. Yes, I know it will melt the foam however in light coats it makes awesome effects. The etching/burning look should add a lot of depth to the scaring in the rock.

I like using 3-4 layers of a mix of wood glue and sand with my paint on things like rocky dioramas and halloween tombstones. creates a hard shell.. it really nails in that hard rock feel and protects it.

@@TheSmugglersRoom Check out BoyleiHobbyTime here on youtube. He uses modpodge.. but I went with the heavier wood glue for more strength. Its a little thicker but it works out quite well.

I could have easily "hung out" with you for much longer. If you haven't already tried, you can spritz acetone on the foam for a different effect.

Texture paste? I really need this for a project! 10 minutes ago I didn’t know I needed it though. Another reason for me to go to my local hobby store.

This looks super awesome! I love working with insulation foam :D Recently I covered my whole living room in fake cobblestone-walls carved out of it for a medieval/fantasy-style roombuild :D Now I just need to find some space to do the same thing for a Star Wars-themed room xD

Hi my friend, it was really good! But the more rounded corners sometimes give me a more organic look and not just stones... and as the colors used remind me of skin tones and depending on the angle of vision, it really gives me the impression of an organic piece of a trapped creature on the wall lol...

Lol, nothing wrong with rust at all bud. Just wasn’t sure if it worked. Tatooine is a desert, so not a lot of moisture to produce rust you know? I decided to use magnets so that it’s easier to move. Also, the area inside the cabinet will be where all the electronics, amplifier, and other internals will be stored. So I wanted an easy way to access it. You’ll see 😉

Another really beautiful build! I was wondering, though, about the process of the North Carolina SW inspire ship build. Are there any updates coming for that project?

I'm still in the process of trying to determine how to make starship computer consoles without using laser etching or expensive Arduino and multiple LED / LCD screens setups. The idea is to make a functional practical prop storage cabinet to house game consoles, PC printer and game accessories in what would appear to be a Star Destroyer bridge terminal complete with a few LED lit prop screens and an overhead primary display monitor for actually gaming on.

Hey John, have you explored using Styrene? Maybe with an MDF or Plywood base below? Styrene cuts very easily with simple tools, and you can layer the cuts to build up the look. Styrene is also fairly inexpensive and you can get it in multiple thicknesses. Maybe we can do a control panel build here shortly with Styrene to show how it could be done.

Thank you! If you keep watching we’ll keep going! I used the oil paint because I’ve found that it has a more “grimy greasy” quality for weathering. It also has a much longer working time. Additionally if you use a paint thinner you can wipe away areas if you put too much or are not happy with it. Aside of all that, you can mix it with mineral spirits or paint thinner and use it as a wash. It’s awesome!

I have used a sealer from time to time, You can also use mod podge. If you use the Matte finish, it will dry clear and create a protective shell. That really helps.

What's up with the Philip's screws? I know your not a fan of using them. Still a fantastic build. Can always replace them later on.

How many times did you grind your teeth and get goosebumps while working with all that foam? Lol, I do every time. I have to wear earplugs every time I cut it, it's worse than a fork scratching a plate! Quick tip, I make alot of faux rock (not star wars style) for customers. I use a grinder with a heavy grit sanding flapper wheel to make VERY fast work of it. It works good on wood and mdf also. Just a tip! Keep it up brother!

Almost forgot another tip!, when I have a spray can tips get slightly clogged, I don't clean them or throw them away. I save them for when I need to paint a bunch of little dots on a project. It just saves so much time, I don't have to flick the paint, nor do I have to go through the painstaking process of using a small brush to do it. Don't know if that helps with what you do. Works like a charm for me when I paint faux rock. Thanks! Cheers! Drink a Fat Bantha for me!!
