This is a buyer's guide to help with the rather confusing 2024 turbo levo line-up. Or maybe you should wait for Specialized Turbo Levo GEN 4 which might be right around the corner?

If I grow soft and need help of a electric motor (and win the lottery) I will consider one of these. 😉great video as always! 👌

Im sure specialized are ready to release the new Levo Gen 4 but they can't due to unsold stock that they don't want to further devalue from the already lower prices. When the Gen 2 SL released I saw the designer interviewed saying you can see from that bike where the new designs are heading. So Im thinking the cross brace that wraps around the shock will go and the kinematics will be improved. I dont think it will have the new Shram drive train with auto shift though, as Specialized have thier brand identity wraped up in the motor control. Also Shram are unlikely to make auto shift available to them as that tech is too new. S works will release first. Possibly towards the end of 2024 if they can shift the current stock that is.

I am too debating if the SRAM motor will be used since it's essentially the same motor as they already use in the Turbo Levo, albeit with some trickery added to it. I think a 48 V motor is a more natural step and a new modern motor is something that can attract customers to pay a little extra.

Yes I believe you will be proved correct. The higher voltage of 48V will be more efficient, due to being better at overcoming the resistance of the cable harness and the coils within the motor. This will allow the cable and coils cross sectional area to be reduced. This will also reduce wieght providing further efficiency gains and better range. It is a win win and will be a big selling point for the next generation of e bikes. These new motors will also be able to produce higher peak power even if the rated power stays the same due to pedal assist laws deciding the power output. That will allow better acceleration up to the 25 KPH limit. If you have used battery drills of 12/18/24V and felt the benefits of the higher voltage then you can see where ebikes will be heading. The 48V standard is in line with the car industry, which companies like Brose are already very involved in. This will also help to reduce development and manfacturing costs.

I think 48V is the future and there are a lot of things that happen with increased voltage, but the performance gains aren't that huge after all. I guesstimate only about a 5% range/performance increase with 48V vs 36V thanks to better thermal effiiciency. But there are other gains besides range/performance. As you said the windings in the motor can be made smaller which results in a smaller and lighter motor given the same output. Voltage drop problems are less pronounced with a higher voltage too. Unfortunately the voltage cannot be higher than 50V in the EU due to EU laws (EN15194). Safety is a concern too with higher voltages, but it would have been interesting to see a 800V eBike systerm, right?

Sounds dangerous to me. You can be killed by such a high DC voltage. If you were unlucky enough to touch 800V DC, you would stick to it due to muscle contraction, and anyone who touches you would also get stuck. The result could be two dead people. 48V is much safer 🙂. The biggest benefit to the end user will be a lighter motor and lighter battery that still has 700-900 WH resulting in a lighter bikes, for the entire 48V motor range. As we all know E bikes are too heavy. The motors will also have higher peak output, resulting in better acceleration curves. 48V is the future for sure, but this will be slow to filter though to us, due to the bike industry being over stocked right now. The new models release dates will be delayed as a result. This issue will also affect any further development of new products as R & D always gets cut when money is tight, @@MTBs

What brands and models do you think deliver the same quality and experience as Specialized Levo does? I don’t want to pay for hype around a brand if I can get a comparable bike for less.

Right now the Comp Alloy and Comp Carbon are good value for money since there probably will be a gen 4 out soon. It's like half the price from 3 years back. Other great value bikes are Canyon Spectral (2024, 160 mm up front) and Orbea Rise. But there are so many brands nowadays so it might be better to start looking at brands in your area where you can get service.

It is definitely coming, I am sure it is ready for release too, just don't hold your breath waiting for the release. Specialized have a ton of the Gen 3 to sell first, with a bike industry that is tanking at the moment.

If you want a crystal ball view, the new Gen4 Turbo Levo will look similar to the Gen 2 Levo SL, if you want an idea about how it will look. It will be lighter, probably by 1-2 Kg with the new 48V motor. Better range per Watt hour as a result of the lower weight. Improved Kinematics just like the Levo SL got. Possibly a new TCU with a larger screen and more functionality. The one area where I see no change is that there will be no auto shift integration.

MGU are years away from any possible widespread integration. This may not work well at all for EMTB's. We will all have to wait and see. Nothing will happen quickly due to the current state of the bike industry. @@MTBs
