Spam Musubi with Kimchi
Spam is one of those ingredients that you either love or hate. In the US, Spam has a bad rep as being mystery meat or poor people’s food due to its WWII history. However, outside the US, like in South Korea, Spam is considered a classy gift with elaborate gift boxes.
I like Spam, but, only in small amounts. The salt content, even in the Low Sodium Spam, can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. My favorite way to prepare Spam is Spam musubi.
Spam musubi is a popular snack and lunch food in Hawaii. At the root of it, it’s cooked Spam, rice, a slightly sweet sauce and nori. There’s a number of different ingredients you can add to it, like egg, furikake, or kimchi. You can slice the Spam thicker, use more/less rice, it’s up to you.
There’s a mold you can purchase to make musubi, but the small Spam can works perfectly...plus I don’t like purchasing single use kitchen tools.
Ingredients:
1 small can of Spam sliced into four ¼” slices
2 cups of cooked rice
Four 2” strips of nori
Kimchi
¼ cup of sugar
¼ cup of soy sauce
¼ cup of mirin
Directions:
1. Make rice over stovetop or in a rice cooker. Set aside and keep warm
2. Mix sugar, soy sauce and mirin in a small bowl until sugar has dissolved. Set aside.
3. Heat approximately ½ tbsp of oil in a frying pan. Pan fry Spam slices until browned on both sides.
3. Brush sauce mixture on both sides of the Spam and continue to fry until slightly caramelized. Remove from pan and set aside.
4. Wash and dry the Spam can. Line the inside with plastic wrap. Pack rice into the can so it’s about ⅓” thick.
5. If you’re using kimchi, place a layer of kimchi on top of the rice.
6. Place a slice of the fried Spam on top of the kimchi. Gather the excess plastic wrap around the top of the Spam and continue to pack down. Pull out the musubi and set aside. Repeat with the remaining slices of Spam.
7. Lay down a strip of nori on your work surface. Unwrap a Spam and rice block and center it on top of nori. Fold the nori tightly around the musubi and seal with a dab of water.
8. Repeat with remaining musubis and enjoy!
Notes:
If you like more sauce, brush some sauce on the rice block before you place the kimchi or Spam. You can also warm up the remaining sauce and use it as a dipping sauce.
If you’re using kimchi, you can also finely mince the kimchi, squeeze out the excess juice and layer it on top of the rice.

So clever to use the spam can as a compressor or whatever its called rather than buying it looks really good👌🏻
I never thought to use the can as a rice press, genius!
Using the can as a mold for the rice is genius! Also the kimchi was a nice touch! Definitely trying this!
Wow.. I totally miss this now that I live in the Frozen north! I didn't know you used the SPAM can to form the musubi roll! Thanks for this.
I'm so glad I watched this video!Other people in other videos tell you to buy a mold,or cut out the bottom of the spam can to make a mold, but I never find mold anywhere and it takes a long time to cut out the bottom of the can,(and you could get cut by the can any second!)and I get really hungry for a snack so this video showed a different way to use the spam can to be a mold with a plastic wrap, and then you just easily pull it out!Genius!Thank you! (Now I'm going to go make some that looks nice, because of a new technique!)

We have the molds here to press it down
As someone who lives in Japan, this was incredibly easy to make. They even sold the Nori in exact size strips so all I had to do was pull it out of the package.

Someone needs to make a 3d printed mold to make a can of spams worth at once
Omg this is the thing I miss most about Hawaii (besides the views, and the people, and the weather, and the views, and the ocean, and the views).... :( I only made it once and it didn't taste as good. But using the spam container as the mould is fucking genius!! I need to do this again.
It's a hearty meal in the middle of the night
Today I will make it,

I always use honey to "sauce" my spam. So you can use that instead of the soy sauce + sugar + mirin
Your steps are so much simpler! But I dont have Nori sheets lol...

9 жыл бұрын
Mirin is a type of rice wine similar to sake. It has lower alcoholic content and higher sugar. You can find it at all asian supermarket and some supermarkets that have an asian section,
What is mirin? 😅
what if you don't have nori?
@makefoodeatfood
8 жыл бұрын
+Christina Renee Hmmm...if you don't have nori, you can try rice paper. Or you can just sandwich the rice between two slices of Spam, like a Spam burger. Your fingers might be a little sticky, but I bet it will be worth it. :)
Is mirin optional
@makefoodeatfood

Yes, mirin is optional. It adds a subtle sweetness, but not necessary to enjoying spam musubi.

Ruby Al I don't think it tastes fishy at all. It adds a bit of salty 'umami' flavor.
