I'm live in Hawaii and my mom makes the best! Instead of frying your spam, try cooking the spam in a little bit of water some shoyu (soy sauce. Yamasa shoyu is the best) with a little bit of minced garlic sugar and sesame oil. Fill a pot with you spam and then add in your shoyu until it completely covers all the slices. Then add in a little bit of minced garlic. Bring to a boil until your spam is cooked. Using the same method as you did, pack the rice tightly as so. Then, before adding the layer of spam, put furikake on top of the rice. Then later the spam. Wrap in nori sheet and use water to seal the end of the sheet to prevent it from falling apart. Let me know if you give it a try :) sorry I don't have exact measurements... my mom just eyeballs everything

Great video! I just made some this morning. In addition to the seasoned glazed SPAM I add a layer of scrambled egg and drizzle on a coat of combined mayo/oyster sauce. I've made it before with Thai hot chili sauce too and that adds a heck of a kick! I cook a fluffy scrambled egg in a square frying pan and use the SPAM can to cut out the just-right size and shape of eggs. I bought a musubi press mold at Amazon for 7 bucks and it works like a charm! Thanks for your video and your pleasant and enthusiastic presentation :)

Emmy, maybe you should try soaking the (sliced) spam in mirin, sake or water to leech out excess salt (probably like 10 minutes should work). Pat dry and then fry.

Was in the process of making this from another recipe but found your video to see if there were some shortcuts that others had not mentioned. The plastic wrap in the can is a great tip. Another recipe recommended slicing the Spam into thinner pieces if you are using the regular Spam (rather than the low-sodium kind). From my experience the low-sodium Spam is the way to go. But my kids love this and they are having it tonight along with some homemade baked salmon & avocado roles. Thanks E.

My grandma used to always make musubi for my grandpa and us. She would either use the plain or spicy spam and I don't recall her putting the sauce, but I know they usually do in Hawaii. Now that they have all kinds of flavors, I just use the Teriyaki spam to skip the sauce step, it's sooo good and I'm passing the recipe on to my boyfriend because he adores Spam musubi now, too! People can assume spam is gross all they want, more musubi for us >:)

Our family adds lightly stir fried kimchi to make kimchi spam musubi. cook sliced kimchi in a frying pan with about a tablespoon of sugar and teaspoon of sesame oil until kimchi turns from a white ish color to a tan ish color. cook spam in soy sauce and sugar mixture in a pan until spam is cooked well done. assemble with bottom part being rice, then spam, then layer of kimchi, then on more layer of rice (using a musubi mold is easiest) then wrap in nori (if you take a square of nori and cut it in half, it usually ends up being the same size as the musubi. Sweet, savory, and lightly kimchi sour musubi.

It's been a challenge to find fresh meat where I am during this pandemic, but I was able to find canned ham. The store didn't even have Spam; they only had Treet, which I've never had before, so we'll see what it tastes like. I have the rest of the ingredients already because I like to cook Japanese food, so it's time to finally try making this! I can't quite remember, but I feel like I did try spam musubi when I lived in Japan and took a trip to Okinawa, but I could be mixing that up with a hamburger onigiri. Time to dig through my social media photos. When I searched for spam musubi on youtube, I didn't realize Emmy had a video. So glad to find your recipe! Although I couldn't get meat, I did finally get some eggs, so I think I wanna put a layer of omelet under the spam on a few. I'm excited!

Probably not authentic but they have a delicious coffee one with a mocha core that is SO GOOD. Highly recommend both. 👍

Yum! I love spam musubi! I live in Hawaii and it's pretty much a staple here. I use the same teriyaki glaze, soy sauce, mirin, and sugar, but I do add a dash or so of garlic. Goes very well together with the spam, rice, and nori.

Musubi isn't traditional, so it matters not what you add, as long as it tastes good. It's literally just a fusion of Japanese-American culture and U.S. Military rations.

Spam tastes like gammon to me, only saltier. I think Spam has a much nicer texture - the only thing I dislike sboyt gammon is the texture. Speaking of which, honey glazed Spam would be an interesting experiment. :-)

Hi Emmy! I love watching your vids. Spam musubi my mom makes are more of a “Spam Roll ” than a“Spam Musubi“; two layers of rice,Spam fried and seasoned with soy sauce and sake &Sweet thin egg roll in between, rapped with seaweed. She sometimes serve it on a bed of radish sprout s.

  • @afrojox334

I tried this today and it was good! I sliced the spam thinner and put more rice since you said it was salty. Definitely gonna make this more often. Back in the Philippines, this was my go-to "meal" when I was in school and late for class, which was usually the case lol. I remember they had variations with it, like putting egg (of course also molded to the shape of the spam) in the middle, or double spam with egg. Lol. So glad I came up with this easy recipe. Thank you!

Sticky rice. If you dont have a rice cooker, dont use minute rice. You can get bowl of sticky rice in the asian sections of almost any grocery store. You literally put it in the microwave for 90 seconds and it's amazing. Been popular in hawaii and korea for years. The best brands will say "korean sticky rice"

I bet that would work! Ham and pineapple are great together... And, lol, it always has grossed me out, but my daddy loves spam and pineapple sandwiches (with mayo and on white bread...I feel sick just thinking about that part but I am probably weird). I think if I try this recipe for myself I will add some pineapple to my musubi. :)
