I know everyone has pointed this out, but just to add to it. CCR's "Proud Mary is the ORIGINAL VERSION. Tina Turner's was the COVER version. A quick aside, after CCR disbanded, Fogerty got screwed over by the record company and he was denied any royalties from any CCR songs. Because of this, he refused to perform any CCR songs at his solo concerts. Years later, at an awards ceremony, Bob Dylan told John "You better start playing your old songs again or people will start thinking that 'Proud Mary' was a Tina Turner song.".

Yeah, I don't think there's a person on the planet who hears CCR for the first time and doesn't assume they're southern. I grew up in Cali about 50 miles from El Cerrito (and about 350 miles from Lodi, btw) and always assumed CCR were from Louisiana. Fogerty's vowel choices and weird-ass dipthongs with soft Rs ("woikin' fo the man" and "big wheel keep on toinin'," e.g.) and the way he softens or runs together some of his consonants gives him what my young ear always thought was a bit of a New Orleans "Yat" accent. Or maybe a little Cajun.

When you think about it, CCR skyrocketed with their second album in 1969, which included Proud Mary, and by 1972 it was over. Four years at the top and fifty years later we are still listening to them. Fogerty put out his first solo album in 1975, but it wasn't until Centerfield another decade later before he found his feet and he finally began to play old CCR songs again. His brother Tom died in 1990, but both Stu Cook and Doug Clifford are still around, but there was a lot of bad blood back then, most of which still exists to this day.

Thank you guys for reacting to this CCR song. I was a teen when this came out and I always loved the laid back feel of it. When Tina did her cover and I am a Tina fan, but to me her version took that laid back feeling right out of it so for me, I prefer the original sound of that CCR sings it with. My Dad wasn't a dancer by any stretch of the imagination but I tell you, if we were at a dance and this song came on, he'd grab me and out on the floor we'd go.... so this was our song. Again, thanks for experiencing CCR's version. Take care and be well. Peace.

This is the way the song was meant to be done. John Fogerty wrote it and it has a "Southern" sound to it along with the Southern type lyrics. Proud Mary is a river boat rolling along the river in good old Dixie. Great lead vocal as always and a great musical vibe.

This is a John Fogerty song for Credence Clearwater Revival and CCR's Proud Mary was Number One on the Billboard Charts in 1969. Tina Turner's awesome stage show cover version of Proud Mary was released in 1971 and got up to Number 4 on the Billboard Charts and took the legend of the song to astronomical heights. It's different how Whitney Houston turned Dolly Parton's country hit that only country radio people ever knew about and turned it into a worldwide legendary hit. Because Tina Turner covered a song that was already universally popular for two years all over the world before spinning her own awesome take on it.

Great interview Stern did with John Foggerty. First, he detailed the deal they were swindled into whihc lead to the break-up of CCR (now it makes sense why Dan Foggerty quit, sayig he could make more money pretty much doing anything else than selling hit records!). Second point was interesting from a "conception" point. When John was a teenager, he got into the habit of carrying a notebooke and writing down any thoughts he had. The very first entry in the very first notebook was the phrase "Proud Mary"; he kept it because he liked it and figured taht he could make something out of it, someday!

Totally agree with u too Amber .. hard to pick bc both tracks are so diff. Can't compare them really. This CCR song is special to me since I grew up listening to my Daddy & his picking buddies play & sing CCR'S version. Thnx for getting to this jewel Amber & J.😊❣️☮️🤘🏼

It hurts my soul when people don't know and don't credit the original writer/band of a popular song. Except when it is in reference to "All Along the Watch Tower" by Jimi Hendrix-once he came out with his version everyone forgot that Bob Dylan wrote and recorded it first. Including Bob Dylan himself. LOL.

I had a high school teacher that was taking roll and wanted to know where my friend Roland was at, he sure was not in class this particular day. I sat near the back of the room (of course!), and I stood up and belted out my best Creedence / Fogerty try and sand, Roland, Roland's at the river. The entire class just lost it! I had to go to the office. However, Roland was skipping school and WAS at the river and was fishing!!! Crap kids in a country school do can be entertaining.
