What does that have to do with this video, @@KTRS?
The song sounds like it is about the apocalypse. It was Vietnam time, and young people, including CCR, had a very negative outlook on how things were going. This went hand and hand with the Hippies, who were so hopeless about how things were going that they all got high, joined communes, ran them poorly, and did their best to make a new kind of good life for themselves. This was also within a year after the Robert Kennedy (1968), Martin Luther King (1968), and four years after the Malcolm X (1965) assassination. The Kent State Massacre happened in 1970, the year after this song. A lot of good people being killed here too, not just in Vietnam.

It’s about the Vietnam war and how full moons were called bad moons. Full moons light up the night like it’s day time making it hard to hide from the enemy.
@LesterMoore

My last night in Vietnam, USMC (I'd been promoted to radio chief of my company and as such was in a sandbagged compound surrounded by concertina wire, minefield, tanglefoot and fougasse. I was listening to Radio Danang and Bad Moon Rising by Creedence was being played. On the third chorus of "theres a bad moon on the rise" a pair of B-40 RPG's hit and the ground attack by VC and NVA began. We had a 4 deuce battery manned by troopers of the 101st. It quickly became a time of immense concern. With the assistance of gunships and Marine/Army Airborne coordination we beat them off just as they had half overrun our position. I shall never forget this song as it will always remind me of that night, early morning.
This song and Fortunate Son were on the charts in the middle of Vietnam and were especially meaningful because of the war.
Next you should change CCR gears to "Looking out my back door", a wonderfully happy song John Fogerty wrote about imagining life through the eyes of his 3 year old son.
CCR was around the time of the Vietnam war and Watergate. The idea is that with all the chaos that was going on politically and on the battlefield you got a sense that the stars were aligned against the human race; that is, that something ominous was on the horizon. Funny how that more things change, the more they stay the same.

I ckecked Wikipedia: Fogerty reportedly wrote "Bad Moon Rising" after watching The Devil and Daniel Webster. Inspired by a scene in the film involving a hurricane, Fogerty claims the song is about "the apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us"
I was a Navy nurse so didn't get home very often. I was home visiting my mom in Scranton, PA, and took her for a ride in the country. It was a gorgeous Fall day and I had a little red Honda del Sol. We drove down country roads with the top off and I put on my Creedence cassette. She went nuts and just loved it. We were driving around singing this at the top of our lungs. Never thought she'd love Creedence so much. She was into Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves! Great memory! Appreciate you:-)
I've always thought that 'Down on the corner' was an underrated CCR classis.
Try Proud Mary. You covered Tina doing it, but it’s a CCR song. They also do a good version of Midnight Special.
John Fogerty said in an interview with Rolling Stone that he got the imagery from an old movie he watched called The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941). He wanted the apocryphal feel of impending doom, but it wasn't until the band was actually learning the song that he realized he'd set it to a finger-snapping happy-sounding tune. He said that dichotomy didn't bother him at the time so he left it.

Yes, CCR is from the east bay, California. In fact, they have a song about Lodi, California that I think is pretty funny because it goes "Oh lord, stuck in Lodi again"
I am a native Kansan who has lived in this State most of my life. I knew a number of storm chasers who loved this song. Only it was tornados, not hurricanes. Not going out a night took a different meaning from them. Storm chasing a night is VERY dangerous. Thank you for your reaction.
Years ago, I belonged to a club where we could take turns performing covers of songs on stage in front of other members, friends, family, anyone interested in turning up to just listen and enjoy the music. Bad Moon Rising was one of the songs I enjoyed performing. One day the club secretary came up and said, "you're up next, right? Are you doing a fast song?" I said "of course" and she replied, "thank god! The audience is starting to fall asleep!" - the current performer was performing a soft, slow song, as had a number of the previous performers, and even the backing band was looking a bit bored. So I went out on stage when the singer had finished and I swear our lead guitarist had an evil gleam in his eye as I stepped up to the microphone... when the opening chords of Bad Moon Rising ripped out through the speakers, half of the audience jumped in shock. Certainly woke them up. Really love this song.

I think this song was a metaphor for the times which felt apocalyptic- which included the assassinations of President Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, but mostly the Vietnam War which divided the country and there was a feeling of doom- especially for those who served in Vietnam, knowing they could die at any time. CCR's musical style encompassed roots rock, swamp rock, blues rock, Southern Rock, country rock, and blue-eyed soul. Belying their origins in the East Bay subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area, the band often played in a Southern rock style, with lyrics about bayous, catfish, the Mississippi River, and other elements of Southern United States iconography. The band's songs rarely dealt with romantic love, concentrating instead on political and socially conscious lyrics about topics such as the Vietnam War. John Fogerty explained that the lyrics of "Bad Moon Arising" were inspired by a movie called The Devil And Daniel Webster, in which a hurricane wipes out most of a town. This is where he got the idea for the words "I feel the hurricane blowin', I hope you're quite prepared to die." Overall, he said the song is about the "apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us."

In the late 60s early 70s they were one of the biggest bands in the states But sadly as with so many bands there were fierce rivalries resentments and competition within the band and ultimately they split. But they had many great hits including proud Mary have you ever seen the rain looking out my back door. Down on the corner Up around the bend. Green River. And even I heard it through the grapevine. As I have said before you would not have to ask so many questions if you simply had a look at their Wikipedia entry which would reveal almost everything you need to know and the same with John Fogarty who has his own entry. He went on to form other bands and is still around aged 76. His is a very interesting story and he deserves to be remembered more than he is. I like the quote from Bob Dylan when he was asked by a reporter what was the meaning of the obscure lyrics of one of his songs. He simply replied “it rhymes”
California boys but heavy, natural southern leanings in their music. This song is about bad mysterious things that happen. Spooked swamp stuff to me. To continue the theme, Run Through The Jungle by them is brilliant and atmospheric. John has since said many times that it’s about the proliferation of guns in the States. Not Vietnam as was often thought

It's about Nam. Often times what artists tell you is half true. Run through the jungle in the 60's meant Nam. That it ALSO meant here is probably accurate. It's saying trouble is on the way, things are about to get crazy and they did. I was a kid but I remember all of that. Especially Kent State because I live about 35 miles from there give or take. Seeing flag draped coffins on the TV every night coming back from Nam. Crazy days indeed.

@@Spiritbro77 Sorry Spirit it’s not about Nam John has consistently stated including in his autobiography that the song is about there being too many guns. It often gets linked with Vietnam pictures when played on KZread and that fine but it’s an incorrect association from John’s perspective. Jungle being US streets in this case. Check Google as there are plenty of sites showing John’s actual words about the song
Two different things I think about hearing this song. 1) I think of the movie, "American Werewolf in London" (early 80s) and they played this at some point and it was perfect. 2) That this song goes well with what's goin on THESE days even more so than when it came out. Love CCR!

@@75Isobel I thought so too and then I looked it up. They played "Bad Moon Rising" that same evening before he turned into a werewolf for the first time. He was in the apartment alone, pacing back and forth because he was nervous about the full-moon when they were playing the song. When he turned into the werewolf, they played "Blue Moon". Great movie!
I feel like he’s saying always be ready for anything!!!! Bad weather, bad people stuff like that… I’m 56 so I remember!!!!❤❤❤
still need to hear I Put a Spell on You -- I Heard It Through the Grapevine Also a Huge #1 hit by Marvin Gaye
Hahaha. I always have to laugh whenever I first hear this song. I was in Jr High School 8th grade when this hit the airways. To the last one of us, we thought the words in the chorus were there's a bathroom on the right. . . we had no idea why where the bathroom was was relevant but it was a very catchy song so we went for it. It was nearly a year before we realized how dumb we were. 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 He and the group was from California. He dies sound a bit southern in his speech. It most definitely is Southern Rock genre. When we first heard of them we figured they were from Louisiana. Tom Doherty is the Singer. His solo career has been phenomenal too. He also created a Smokey Mountain Blue Ridge type of bluegrass group. I can't remember the name of it. ????

Apparently that's a common misheard lyric. 😂
Credence is from El Cerritos California, just outside of San Francisco. They actually formed in 1959 as The Blue Velvets, of course later changing their name. They actually played at Woodstock in 1969. They only lasted until 1972 because of internal fighting of the group. 🤔😎
John Fogerty (lead singer) told a story on VH1's Behind the Music, about the audience singing the chorus at a concert. A women ,instead of singing "there's a bad moon on the rise", belted out " there's a bathroom on the right". 🤩😂🤣🤣🥳 Said he had a terrible time finishing the song because he couldn't stop laughing.
“There’s a bathroom on the right.” Classic song about having company at your home. 😂
FYI: Back in the day we just called them by their first name, "Creedence." (Or, if we were being a little formal, "Creedence Clearwater." NEVER NEVER NEVER "CCR." --- Piece of trivia... this song is one of the earliest instances of "Misheard Lyrics." I can't tell you how many times (especially after a few drinks) we'd be singing "There's the bathroom on the right!"

I love ccr and John fogerty who's having a great solo career
The way I take this song is, "If you''re looking for bad things, that's what you're going to see, and you'll be stuck in fear.". You all better just lighten up!
I like Jamal too!! I cannot believe you are talking about him...just makes me so happy. It is your and Jamal's music reaction channels I have come to love and left others behind. You said it just right...the positivity. both with the two of you darlings and Jamal.
Jamel is a cool dude. You're absolutely right. John "JC" Fogerty has a unique vocal sound and is a great musical artist.
Hi Rob Squad, Creedence Clearwater Revival band originated and was formed in Emeryville , California east off San Francisco in 1968.
HarriBest is a great reactor too. He’s not as energetic and seems like more of an introvert, but he goes in a lot of depth and knows a ton about music. Rarely can you go there and introduce him to a lot of the great bands because he knows them, but his takes often make me think of songs in a different way.

"Don't come around tonight Well it's bound to take your life There's a bad moon on the right"
Try John Fogerty’s Old Man Down The Road. He’s the lead singer from CCR. Is a cool song off one of his solo albums.
You are right about them coming from California. CCR came out of the San Francisco music scene, but there is no question that they embraced a southern sound and southern scenes in their music. If you were born on the bayou, you are in the south! Check out "Proud Mary", "Suzie Q", and their cover of "Heard It Through the Grapevine" -- all excellent CCR standards. Also, when you do any CCR song, you may find there is a shorter single version and a longer album version. Make sure you do the longer album versions as the real highlight of many CCR songs are the long instrumental jams they do, and the shorter versions that were edited for the little 45rpm single records are just not the same without those instrumentals.

@@coy0te9 John Fogerty wrote Proud Mary, so CCR’s version is the original. Ike and Tina Turner famously covered it.

That's the California mixed drawl. People come to California from everywhere. A little Oklahoma, a little southern California, a little this, a little that. When you hear people like Joe Walsh and John Fogarty talk and sing, you'll hear it. They say ammins instead of almonds, little nuances like that.
Credence Clearwater revival Was first going to be known as The Blue velvet! When I hear this song I think about a movie I saw back in the early 80s An American werewolf in London! 💙🎶🎶🎶💙
This band all came from San Francisco, so none of us can figure out where they got their twang, but we love them for it. LOL John Fogerty is in his 70s and still sounds great!! I don’t know if he tours, but I follow him on Tiktok and he’s still got it.
John Fogerty the lead singer and founder of CCR, has his own KZread channel and still Rocks with his Kids as his back up group! He's in his late 70s but still Rocks! 🤔🤔🤗😎
"Long As I Can See the Light" is the CCR song you should hit next. Other reactors have missed it, it's bluesy as can be, and....saxophone!

If I'm not mistaken, it's the one and only JC Fogerty on sax and electric piano!
Comparing his voice to "home cookin'" is brilliant! Genius!
Born 1960 I was too young to see Creedence unfortnately but have seen solo John Fogerty on every trip to the fair city of Adelaide, South Australia (2 times, maybe 3?). He had to squeeze so many hit songs into one show (so no one was disappointed) that he played a bunch of them in a big medley. A fantastic and prolific songwriter.
On many "misheard lyrics list as "There's a bathroom on the right"
Great song. Their song Suzie Q is also super awesome (my favorite)
Y’all need to listen to his solo work… in 1985 he released his first solo album in many years he did a couple right after CCR broke up.. this was him getting back to the sound he created… his first release old man down the road was gold!! Of course his former band members sued him for sounded like CCR… he of course won that lawsuit. His album Premonition won rock album of the year in 1998 it’s a live album with his solo stuff and CCR stuff… masterpiece!
California band with a very distinctive southern rock sound. 'Tombstone Shadow', 'Green River', 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine'., 'Midnight Special, 'Out My Backdoor'...'Proud Mary'.
"Lookin' Out My Back Door" has to be your next CCR reaction. You won't be disappointed! They do something pretty neat at the end. No spoilers here. :)
Chris Berman of ESPN would reference this song when he would call out Andre "Bad Moon" Rison, for making a great play on the football field.

Which is why Rison has a BAD MOON tattoo and he made it part of his signature when he signs memorabilia.
Speaking of iconic voices that you will never forget and recognize immediately, Molly Hatchet will give you some in your face southern rock with Danny Joe Brown belting the vocals like you've never heard. Unless you have of course, hah. "Flirtin With Disaster" is probably their biggest hit and still my favorite of theirs. Thanks
“Stick to the road and beware the moon”
This was always played when qb for the Houston oilers Warren Moon took to the field .
