Smoking and Hair Transplant | Dr Akanxa Bhatti explains

Smoking can lead to poor hair transplant results. It reduces grafts survival and the speed of the healing process. Heavy smoking can lead to complications like skin necrosis (discussed in video- Slit Making *link below*) in the operated area of the scalp. In this video, Dr. Akanxa Bhatti makes it easier for you to plan a hair transplant with a timeline to reduce smoking so that you could make the most of your hair transplant.

    Minoxidil and finestaride helps in growing lots of hair , it's only medicine which really help to regrow new hair in modern time , but there is trap even if u don't had HT you would still grow lots of new hair via minoxidil and finestaride, this medicine will give u illusion that your hair transplant result is amazing but in actual those hair r result of medicine nd it will fall out moment u stop taking pills and medicine.... In short your hair transplant result won't be clear u will not be sure new hairs r transplanted or medical by product.

    Smoking and vaping have the same effect after a hair transplant. Both would contain nicotine which constricts the blood vessels of the sclap. However, smoking cigarettes would hurt your lungs and your pocket more! Hope that answers your question.

  • @hairlosstreatmentformen

    Smoking interferes with every normal function in the body like hair growth. Since, the crucial period of 2-3 weeks is over after the procedure, smoking less than 5 cigarettes would not impact your hair transplant result. However, the effect it would have on your transplanted hair over the years to come will be the same as the effect it would have on the hair that was not transplanted. So yes, it is best to reduce smoking and eventually quit if you want both native as well as transplanted hair to last longer.

    It's very hard for smokers to just quit, i do enjoy the after work/dinner cigarrete. I did my transplant and tried not to smoke but it was too hard, my clinic said that if it was making me too anxious and stressed it would be better to just smoke 1-2 per day on an open outside space. But online everyone keeps saying it will damage the whole transplant, im very worried because i dont want to waste my money but i also can't quit smoking right now. This doubt is driving me crazy.

  • @hairlosstreatmentformen

    @hairlosstreatmentformen

    I understand your concern but before you go ahead for a hair transplant you need to realise that all clinics would want you to get the procedure done, especially black market clinics as losing out on you would mean losing out on revenue. However, a doctor who does the hair transplant themselves would be concerned about their licence to practice because if you are a heavy smoker you can develope skin necrosis which can be dangerous. Yes, 1-2 cigarettes a day is fine provided they are spaced out during the day. However, if you continue to smoke heavily later on you will definitely have hair thinning over a period of 3 years. So, if you are determined to have the best result, it is best to stop smoking/reduce smoking to 1-2 cigarettes a day for a week or 2 before the procedure. Once you are used to reduced amounts of nicotine, you could go ahead with the procedure safely provided you do not exceed 2 cigarettes for at least 2 weeks after procedure. After 2 weeks you can counter the effect of nicotine on hair by applying minoxidil twice a day, if you are very reluctant to stick to 2 cigarettes a day. Also, before and after 2 weeks of procedure, you could consider nicotine patches or nicotine gums instead of going back to help you cut down on cigarettes. Starting from a day before procedure to 2 weeks after procedure you should not apply nicotine patches/ not smoke more than 2 cigarettes/ not smoke 2 cigarettes along with nicotine gums in between. Hope this helps.

    It depends on the dose of nicotine in the patch. If it has a high dose, the blood vessels in the scalp with constrict and hence provide lesser blood supply to your hair follicles. A minimal dose is fine, however it is never the same as not having any nicotine in your system.

    It is not safe to use more than 1 patch a day as this could lead to nicotine overdose which could be dangerous. Please do not experiment with your body. It is always best to get a prescription of the right dose of the patch you require from a doctor. • @hairlosstreatmentformen

    @hairlosstreatmentformen

    Vaping is more or less equal to smoking since it involves inhaling nicotine just like smoking. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor which leads to hypertension. Hypertension can in turn lead to bleeding on the day of surgery. So, yes. Anything that contains nicotine would definitely cause more bleeding if you smoke it 1 day before or on the day of the procedure. Moreover, vaping within the first 2 weeks after procedure could slow down the healing process and deprive your newly tramsplanted hair from adequate blood supply. This could be seen later as thinner hair than you had expected. However, vaping once in a while would do no harm. It's only when the nicotine levels are constantly high in your circulation, that these effects are visible in a hair transplant result.

    You deprived your newly transplanted hair from normal blood supply for 2 weeks. If the number would have been 2-3 cigarettes then it would've had negligible effect on your hair. In that case it wouldn't have been a problem. However, if you would've smoked for the first 14 days after procedure, the harm caused would've been greater. So, you should now concentrate on either completely quitting smoking or reducing the number to 2-3 per day.
