F.U.E or F.U.T hair transplant? Listen to me, I've had both!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've had both FUE and FUT hair transplant procedures and this clip aims to help men who need to decide which to go for. Honest, straight forward advice on cost, pain, recovery time, operation duration and more.
Your surgeon will recommend either FUT or FUE but it's essential that you do your own research to figure out which is best for you. Hair transplant clinics will potentially advise you to take the method which will cost more so they make more money. Some of the info I was given by clinics before my procedures was incorrect and misleading too.

Totally right about the pain level with the FUT. Zero pain. Two additional problems with FUT vs. FUE. An FUT is about half the price of an FUE, and with an FUT you can do huge number of grafts (4000 FUs at one time). With FUE the most you normally get is 1500 (for the same price as 4000 FUs done with the FUT). I’ll take FUT any day over FUE.

Another thing (which I'm not sure was mentioned in this video, and which The Hair Chemist talks about a lot) is that FUT is much more allowing when it comes to doing further hair transplant surgeries in the future. It allows for a greater yield than FUE does.

If you are going to have an FUE procedure, and the doc you're meeting with does only FUE, the questions I ask are: Removal: -In concern of damaging grafts when removing from donor site; What is your transection rate? -Your transection rate including partial transection ie: losing hairs from a unit, ie: doubles, triples, fours only growing as singles due to removal damage? -What extraction punch will you use on me? -Why did you chose this punch? -Have you used others? Like the WAW system, or John Cole’s system, etc? -Will all removals be done by a punch smaller than 1mm? No bigger than 1mm, right? (Preferably .8 - .9mm) -I want all FUE removals to be spread out as much as possible. Not all from any concentrated ‘patch’. Utilizing ALL the most densely concentrated areas, but as spread out as possible -Do you draw squares and count hairs per measured squares to determine areas of density, for consistent spread out of harvesting? Placement: -In concern of damaging the fragile FUE grafts while inserting; Will you be placing grafts with forceps into incisions, or will you be using an implanter pen? -What is the diameter of incisions you will make? Will you use custom blades depending on the graft size/count? (ie: singles = .62 , doubles = .88 , triples = 1mm) -Will you be using 'lateral slit technique'? Grafts and Procedure: -How many grafts do you think are left in my donor ‘bank’? -I want only singles along my hairline -Whatever specifics I want to address (how many grafts I want to use, design and placement of grafts etc etc etc) -Will you draw out the above specifics/plan on my head before surgery begins, and show me to discuss so I have clear understanding and agreement on what is to be done? -Will you provide a hair count sheet/surgical record; how many 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s were transplanted? Cost: -What would you charge me for whatever number of grafts and procedure you suggest? -Based on the end results, is there any type of "guarantee" or rate of success warranty you offer?

Here I am now and not 100% happy with the FUE results since the other pre-existing hairs are continuing to thin and fall out, so I'm seriously considering FUT in a few months. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, and aside from the first week of recovery after FUT, generally the other pros of FUT outweigh the cons. Best of luck to you and thanks !

" since the other pre-existing hairs are continuing to thin and fall out" Are you using preventive medication, like finasteride? Because you should. If you're still balding, even after the transplant, you'll need something to stop further hair loss. The transplanted hairs will stay, but the other hair that was already there will continue to diminish over the years depending on how aggressive your hair loss is.

I've never had a transplant but I'm leaning toward FUT because it seems like the only disadvantage is the linear scar, which is only visible if you have a shaved or short haircut. The reason I don't want an FUE is because the clinic I'm planning to go to uses an ARTAS robot for FUE transplants. It seems like most people who have had that surgery are unhappy with the results. They do manual surgery for FUT, which seems like a safer option. Do you have any opinion on the ARTAS robot?

It is the Skill of the Surgeon for sure. I had both , but my strip scars were problematic. I had FUE Beard Hair and no problems. For me I prefer FUE because I have no visible scarring but do with the FUT. I suppose you are correct about the Surgeons Skills. If Fue works like it did with me it is much better in terms of visible scarring. FUE is the only way to extract Beard hair or body hair because no person would want to walk around with a strip scar on their face. Nobody ever stares or can even tell. However my problem with Transplants in either FUE or FUT is at the end of the day your donor hair , the area where they take the hair will always be thinner- have less hair and that needs to be stressed. I do not like beards so I could care less that they took most all of my beard hair on my neck area. In fact I may have one more procedure but have very little donor hair scalp or beard so not sure how much can be done. I would say perhaps 300 to 500 grafts max. I was scarred very badly in the 1980s with Scalp flaps, Scalp Reductions and Punch Grafts as well as strip surgeries. It is best if you could do everything possible before any type of surgery. You are correct you will have scarring no matter which way you choose. One must be prepared for this or do not have a Transplant.

I have had 3 FUT surgeries and one very small fue procedure (600 grafts). My first FUT surgery didn't produce great results, I then did another FUT with a different surgeon and the results were great, the next FUT was a small touch up and scar repair and then 9 years later I had an fue surgery just to thicken the hairline slightly. What I would be telling people is that although FUE sounds like the better/easier option and may be less invasive you need to think about getting the maximum amount of grafts from your donor area long-term, you are far better off starting with FUT surgeries. As I say I have had 3 FUT procedures and I could have more as I still have a good donor area bar a 1cm strip scar, if I had FUE and used the grafts that way from the get go I would probably be nearing my donor limit, also once you have depleted the donor area from FUE you can't really do an FUT surgery as the strip they remove will have too many missing grafts. I have had around 5-6000 grafts taken from my donor and have been advised I can have more strip surgeries and that if I went for FUE I could have at least 2000 more grafts removed that way as well, I see a lot of people going to turkey for FUE and getting big surgeries that are pretty much depleting their donor area in 1 or 2 transplants. For anyone worried about an FUT scar and choosing FUE for that reason just be aware that any scar you have can be filled via a small fue procedure, once I have finished with my FUTs that is what I will do to cover the remaining scar, you can also do scalp micro pigmentation in the meantime. On another note FUT is normally a lot cheaper as well....

Fue vs fut . If you re bolding really bad and still young then you should consider fut as you ll end up with more hair and you won't hurt the donor area that much for future transplants. However if you re not really that bold and in your thirties then an fue should do the job . Depending on your case , two fue procedures should be more then enough . Keep in mind that during the fue , they don't take the entire graft which means there is a big chance that the hair will regrow again .

Fut seems much safer doner area wise people jump straight to fue with a Norwood 3-4 and then lose hair behind the transplant but don't have enough doner hair after fue. Fut you can get 3000+ grafts and then still have minimal impact on the doner area seen some get 6000-7000 and still have doner to then do fue the risk is going to a doctor who doesn't properly stich the scar or goes to high beyond doner area.

The surgeon had a problem seeing well to harvest my whitish hair with FUE, so that slowed everything down. FUT was moderate pain for three days and then improved rapidly after that and my scar is almost impossible to find. FUE was minimal pain controlled by tylenol and a quick recovery. If I were going to do a third surgery, it would be FUT no question. For guys that want to shave their head, go FUE. For those that don't shave their head and for the highest quality grafts, go FUT. hmmm..the idea that you were presented with a choice, like a menu, of either FUT or FUE is not right, the surgeon should be making the choice on what procedure is best, based on various factors such as hair type, your age, the condition of your donor area and whether you are likely to have more procedures in future, the choice should be clinical and based on what will yield best results, I would agree that in most cases FUT is the best way to go especially for a first procedure. I think a lot more skill is needed by the surgeon to perform an FUT, it is an older procedure but I think there are many surgeons who are unable to do it because they simply do not have the skill, and that is another reason why surgeons push FUE. An FUT is still the gold standard procedure.

I’m on 6weeks post HT and I think it’s a bad idea not to use minoxidil and propecia to keep existing transplanted hair. $10,400 is too much money and not to mention the pain I went thru the first week of not sleeping well. Btw, FUT is def the way to go!

No, the idea of my HT was so I wouldn't have to use any more medication. They take hairs from areas on your scalp which are not affected by DHT, which makes them fall out. So you don't need to take anything.

You can still do cardio and legs but you can't risk lifting anything above your head which could potentially stretch the scar. In the end I still have a scar but hopefully it's less wide. The FUT hasn't left any painful spots, totally healed.

I don't think you're right about those dying hair follicles with FUE. I mean yes they are dying/dead, but it is not because they didn't have 'soil' during the operation The problem with FUE is that not every graft remains intact: When they start 'drilling' , they can only guess or hope that the hair follicle is aligned with the hair's grow direction. If not, they will drill straight into the heart of the follicle (or they will completely miss it) and it will be dead . This is called "transection". I hear this term lesser and lesser. I'm afraid this is because FUE is heavily promoted as the successor of FUT, which it isn't. But transection is the main concern with FUE and makes the yield lower than with FUT. Thank you for the video!
