Should You Buy rFactor 2 or Automobilista?

Ойындар

One of the more common questions I see in the comments section is whether or not rFactor 2 and Automobilista are worthwhile purchases for most Sim racers. Let's dig a little deeper into this...

Good and informative. Thanks for putting it together. Been running rFactor 1 and Papyrus Sierra NR 2003 since their release. Just grabbed rFactor 2 from Steam. It has a "thumbs up" from me as it is most definitely a big jump forward regarding physics, and to an extent graphics as well.

There is licensed content in AMS but I believe it is more to do with the Brazilian stock car series stuff than manufacturers like Ferrari, Porsche etc. as you mentioned. Great video and well explained. I also bought all I could get my hands on starting out last July and after running AC a lot and then getting into RF2 I have now started into AMS. I agree with your assessments on each title.

great video and great approach to clarifying things! my thought to add would be: there are Sim-Race and Sim-Cade Games (Cade for Arcade)! AMS and rFactor are the only real Sim-Race games out there that simulate real racing cars in all aspects! harder to learn but more rewarding when you get it!

In 2020 I must say that Automobilista has an amazing selection of mods. I'm particularly interested in historical F1 and the selection (and quality) of the mods is amazing. I can't comment on rFactor 2 or any of the other games. The handling and physics in Automobilista is really, really nice. Automobilista was a really nice breath of fresh air and I actually just bought it just to support the "untraditional" take on the racing sim. I ended up loving it even if I went straight from Codemaster's F1 series (which I still play on and off).

Nice video! AMS was actually my first racing game I bought and i was really amazed with it. I got rfactor 2 a week ago and its SO good. Each have their own pros/cons. For example rfactor2's weather system. Id reccomend everyone to get both games because i think you cant really compare these games.

  • @Glimiril
    @Glimiril7 жыл бұрын

Another great selling point of rF2 is dynamics of track conditions, with different weather in different parts of the track and when it rains areas that dry are directly effected by tyres running over that surface, not some scripted drying line and 2 laps later all dry (PC2 will be interesting to see if they do that). Also you get marble build up off the racing line and day/night. There are plenty of videos out there of some very long endurance races, where you can also have driver swaps. Just a couple of months ago in rF2 they completed a 24hr Le Mans race, Multi class and streamed, with admins issuing full course yellows etc. It's really where rF2 shines the most. Also rF2 has just released first payed DLC and GT3 has arrived with McLaren 650S and 4 more expected in September, I also read Formula E is coming to rF2 officially too, and with Porsche and Mercedes now joining in, that will be very interesting. I own both rf2 and AC (I don't class Project Cars as a SIM as some fundamentals are obviously set up for game pads over realism) and depending on my mood depends what I drive. All I can say, if your in the market get both, all, they all do things the others don't and so much good racing/driving to be had.

Very true too, I was pointing out things that author of video missed out about rFactor 2 which are some of its strongest components and shows lack of either playing it or research. I have become a bit tired of "Should you Buy?" videos when not everything is covered properly, like AMS uses many of rFactor ISI code. As far as physics AMS he says is stronger than Assetto Corsa but offers no proof, just his opinion on feel (which is subjective based on equipment racing on too), rather than facts.:) Edit: but you're right Rush Smith the UI and many areas of rFactor2 feels a mess, looks a mess.

I am most looking forward to them also bring HTML overlays and making it possible to make our own, so we can get things like pedal and clipping display on DX11 and the all important info without needing a 3rd party dll. But yeah better UI I am also very keen to see, having seen some screen shots. rFactor 2 in many ways is frustrating at the moment cause you know under the hood is a absolute gem for sim enthusiasts.

Man, this video is 100% spot on. Except for the analogy at the end. lol. My experience is that because these two games have such excellent ffb and tyre model, they come across as more natural to drive thus more "easier". I'd compare the riding blind folded to AC and PCars because there, the player has to compensate so much for information that's supposed to be conveyed by the wheel/ffb. Excellent video. You have yourself a new subscriber.

Fair review. I have no experience with Assetto Corsa and project cars, so i cannot judge those. All i can say is that i absolutely love Rfactor 2 and the graphics in the sim are just fine with me. The realism in the driving is where i get my rush from. Combined realism with the current graphics make for a very immersive sim in my opinion. My "gaming resumé" holds sims like GP1 through 4, Grand Prix Legends, Rfactor 1 and now Rfactor 2 and automobilista. I honestly thought that the Rfactor modding community was the biggest in the world ;-) Thanks for clearing that. In the end, it is al personal, but i dont see myself buying AC/ PC anytime soon. What i do feel, maybe incorrectly, is that the many racing games/sims spread the community too much so that hurts the "getting together" a bit. I rather see 1 or 2 sims instead of 6 or 7.

after starting to race a v8 rear wheel drive out on the track, ive found assettos tyre model 10 to be a bit closer to reality, for me. Rfactor in my opinion seems too twitchy and much easier to lose or much harder to catch a slide than out on the track for real.

Was very interested in getting either iracing or rfactor. I'm a big F1 fan, I own assetto corsa and project cars, and I like 'em both. My biggest problem is that I don't really have a lot of time to invest, or wait 2 hours for the next race or something. And for me, it's weird, I don't see a lot of competitive modes for assetto corsa. I don't really care about just racing with no real objective besides winning. I would like a system with points, or ranks or whatever, where something is really "on the line" if that makes sense

You can also factor in cost now, especially with rFactor 2. Their tracks are almost as expensive as iRacing! AMS has some excellent tracks available for free, you just need to sort the wheat from the chaff. AMS also has excellent GT3 mods :) I own both (plus Assetto) and I just can't get along with rF2 . im playing racing sims on and off but i still must choose AMS over anything because it just seems like the complete package from the get go with many championships to choose from. assetto corsa doesn't really have any championship and getting user made championships to work you usually need to DL or buy addons. AMS is pretty much perfect offline racing sim. also AMS has nice ffb right from the start.

The whole rfactor 2 vs AssettoCorsa thing I feel is just a repeat of the rfactor1 vs LiveForSpeed battle of roughly 10 years ago. LFS had better physics, but because of no modding support there just wasn't enough content (tracks, cars) to keep you playing for long. What was there was great, really high quality, there just wasn't much of it. Rfactor2 is todays LFS. Rfactor1 while arguably had worse physics more than made up for it with truly endless content. The base game wasn't even all that great, but what it allowed to do with mods is just incredible. There is more tracks than you can realistically learn in the next 15 years. Google your nearest local track...there is probably a mod of it for rfactor1. Mod quality varies though. Assetto Corsa took over(or is taking over) that role from rfactor1, with many rfactor mods ported(updated) for AC.

I never liked how "unrealistic" the car handling was in Asseto Corsa. The brake threshold is very hard to grasp, the steering while precise it is not very direct and handling in corner is hard to master. All these annoyances really discourage me to use the steering wheel often. I will try rFactor and Automobilista and hope that they have more realistic physics so I can get a joy out of driving like I did with the first version of NFS:MW (while not realistic it thought me the basics of racing)!

I think Rfactor2 May just edge it in the handling/physics department. But it's pretty damn close, and AMS is far better in other areas, more complete and polished mainly. I find myself playing AMS more due to Rf2 being less complete, and harder to enjoy due to the lack of quality mods/tracks, and out of the box play-ability. Plus it doesn't seem as well optimised. Does the Rf2 tyre model make a big difference to you? I think its not a huge difference. I'm glad I own RF2, but will wait until hopefully the new developers turn the game into something more solid, then it might be my fave sim. Until then, AMS is an absolute blast ! (and hopefully PC2 will be also. I think Assetto Corsa is a bit too floaty for my tastes.) Only thing I am not sure about regarding AMS, is when you drive over or clip a kerb, maybe it drags you too much and causes a spin out when it shouldn't ?

In AC1 it was like I'm on ice. I bashed RF2 and i take my words back. For some reasons my control file for t300 was mess up by default i had to change one line in it. bobbavet there is a separate branch (under the beta tab in steam properties) for AMS labelled G29. If you use this (despite the fact your a G920) this should work MUCH better for you. It’s transformed the game for me as it matches the degrees of turn for each car. They had to do this because of the limitations if the Logitech driver. Give this a try, you’ll probably change your mind on the game.

I had the same issue with AMS using a G27 and I wouldn't go back to it. I took a rally truck out for a spin on a track with jumps and everything about AMS was horrible. How could you go wrong with driving a rally truck off a 10' ramp? Well they managed to. I've tried just about every sim out there, but I always go back to AC. You can hop online and start racing just about anytime. It just needs a little more variety, a few ovals, separate online drifting rooms, and a rating system. I'm just getting around to mods and maybe even the SRS this weekend.

Even 18 with halo. rFactor 2, even for casual players, the ffb will be noted instantly and the nordschleife is there for sure. Allot of famous big name tracks available for free. Just download it. And a ferrari challenge, bam, you got the most epic ferrari challenge on nordschleife. Allot can be found in the workshop, one click install.

I do have to say, i just bought rFactor 2, played it for 15 hours while i have played 190 in ams, and rFactor feels way easier (no traction + no abs) compared to ams (same assists) 1 big thing about ams is that the player base is not big, rFactor 2 has alot of open server's running tho.

Where are these servers, I recently bought it again and cannot find any server which is opened with a good set of drivers. Is there a special website showing servers or a way to fix servers the way one could with rfactor. I remember Rfactor required a tweak to show more servers. ANy help would be appreciated.

some servers need passwords and some server need mods that are not hosted by the creator so the game wont download it, to join servers with passwords, you will have to get acces by joining the league that the server is from and if it has mods that you cant download you'll have to go to the sim website (most of the time it's in the server name) and most of the sim league's have a download page, but i found some servers that don't need that, but downloading takes a longtime sometimes! if you have anymore questions let me know!

I loved your video. But some statements seemed a little off. You must be new to simracing because every Simracer that has been doing this for more than 5 years would have known rFactor, thus rFactor 2. Automobilista I am sure most people who know rFactor would know also. Anything that has to do with Reisa studios. Personally, I bought Project Cars and Assetto Corsa both on Steam when they released, but combined time played on both must be less than 1 hour. If I remember Assetto was the more SIM of the two but they both lacked pit stops (at least last I tried them). That killed it for me. A sim has to do with tyre management and pit strategies... IMHO

Rf2 was designed to work with direct driving wheels, as such, any weaker wheel will suffer. AMS OTOH, works beautifully with G29/T300/T500.

IMHO, rF2 is geared towards single seaters and GT3s which is why I don't find motivating to play plus I'm way below competency with F1 cars without driver's assistance which I refuse to use, also my interest in F1 died with Senna; AMS has a huge variety, most of which is from rF1 but is crash prone when stuffed with so many mods. I brought AMS without the intention of rF2 but since I bought the latter via Steam sale, I've not touched AC since but haven't done rF2 much because of lack of suitable mods and personally wished the DRM Revival team chose rF2, not AC.

SimRacing604 Just don't have the effort it takes to build the game up. It looks amazing what you can do with it but with already owning Assetto corsa, automobilista, and dirt rally it was way to frustrating how much you have to adjust and change. This is coming from someone who's first sim was rFactor so if anyone wanted to be impressed it was me, all i got from it was that the tyre model and overall handling was great. But for a game to be fun i think it needed more than just that. Thanks for these videos and the quick reply! Love your content.
