rFactor 2 Review (Updated)

Finally I got around to doing this...literally planned this like 6 months ago.
My first review of this game was back in early 2014. Since then I've put 100's of hours into this sim, allowing me to refine my opinions.

    Thanks for the review. I think you hit the highs and lows accurately. One thing for me is that the depth of RF2 means that to exploit a car/series you can easily spend 100+ hours on it. Personally it means that I don't need a plethora of content, I just need cars and series that are very very good. Then I "go deep" on set up, strategy, some AI races to prep and some multiplayer. For example there is:.. World class open wheeler racing in FSR (slightly modded F ISI Masters) FR 3.5 World Class Endurance in VEC (but you know that) World Class 90s F1 with Communities running the ASR OWC car GT1,GT2,GT3 using ISI Gt cars Then GT3 racing using at least 3 mods of varying strengths and weakenesses and standards (BES, URD, Apex) with Enduracers about to come online. Then there is WTCC (the Civic FFB confused ppl as torque steer was correctly moddeled) Improved production such as the Spec Miata Iconic Street cars such as the Honda NSX, the Corvette. Then there the Meganes And that doesn't even touch on the historics. So for me there is already more than I can manage to fit in. I am failing to drive even my "must drive list" on a monthly basis. I purchased the lifetime option 3 years ago and very very happy. All it lacks is a bit of hype, but you never know the million people who purchased Pcars might yield a little crossover to RF2.

    Nice review Jimmy. I've long thought this is the most underrated sim on the market and far too many people aren't playing it based solely on the graphics, which is just a rotten shame because, well, it's their loss. I've been trying to get a friend of mine to buy into it but he's convinced that iRacing is the be-all, end-all.

    w00t, inb4TimWheatley! Still thinking the same as I have for a while : this game needs a relaunch with a big, big, big piece of content to really make a splash, not just one random car that is just a random car in a game full of random cars. Hopefully the delay for the stock cars is to get more tracks finished and polish the crap out of it.

    I have to agree. If isi would be able to relaunch rF2 with like 5 cars per class GT1 to GT3, some LMP1, LMP2, maybe F1 cars around the 2000s plus a decent grid of BTCC, WTCC and V8 Supercars plus a few more tracks I would like to pay a really decent amount of money for that. The stock content is very very good and I like to see more of them. I know isi doesnt want to do DLC, but I would really love to see a full GT3 or GT2 grid as the cars available from ISI are so much fun.

    Empty Box Personally I feel it's unfair to just dismiss the list of cars in rFactor 2 as "a bunch of random cars". Each one is a work of art, of the most advanced racing sim technology... each single car provides months and even years of endless racing enjoyment.

    Thanks Jim another good vid.I feel like this sim has become too complex for a lot of the community,a large number of people want to just pick up and play and be quick straight out of the gate.With real road and setups being important,it takes time to fully understand this sim.And in my case it takes a bloody age to get even reasonably quick!.I'm a big open wheel fan and that's where this sim shines.I recently read Fangio's biography and it made me want to race those old Brabhams,Sparks and Howstons,Wrong decade I know,but same generation,nothing compares in the sim world like blasting around Spa '66' in that Brahbam In RF2.

    I have several different sims so I tend to spend a week with each before rotating to the next. I will say that coming back to rfactor 2 is always is joy. I enjoy all of them but for pure driving pleasure, this is at the top of my list. I will disagree a bit on Assetto Corsa in that nest to rFactor2, I find the ffb and physics to be very close. But that's splitting hairs. I haven't tried Game Stock Car yet but based on reviews, I might have to give it a shot. Good review Jimmy, thanks.

    Stock Car Extreme is probably the most well rounded sim out there. Plenty of official content, all of which is a heap of fun with physics developed by Niels Heusinkveld. The man understands the older ISI physics engine like no one else in my opinion. With SCE being easier to mod than rF2, I think we'll see it be used a whole lot more in the sim racing community, especially with the additional features on the way (their own version of realroad and substantial tyre model updates). RF2 is the absolute best there is, in my opinion anyway, but it is held back by the difficulty of modding and comparative lack of content.

    i keep umming and ahhing about rfactor 2, simply because of the pay every year model with no real content renewal, yes i know you can pay for a lifetime licence but thats a lot of money for a game that does not get regular car packs. i can play raceroom for free and just buy the cars and tracks i want to use. i think people see rfactor 2 as an old game, just looking at it it does need to be brought into the 21st century. people do go by how something looks and dont look beyond that, just compare rfactor 2 and project cars. people will see project cars as a stunning looking game and go for it simply for how it looks. like empty box said rfactor needs a big relaunch as a lot of gamers probably does not know this game even exists

    Interesting comment on the FFB being the best out there. I just started using rF2 (just updated my system), i like the ffb, but to me the best is the RealFeel plugin for rF1. I still have to put in some more hours in rF2 to be able to compare properly. What do you think about this comparison?

  • @mcbarney

    @mcbarney

    Alessandro Longoni The basics are where most sims can agree, it's all in the fine details here. Unlike a car with realfeel, with rF2 you can do 100 laps in a row with none being the same. You can drive the cars for months... or more and it's always fresh. There are compromises for this fidelity though(consumer grade wheels) but where those compromises are, is entirely up to you.

  • @mag8mag8

    @mag8mag8

    I am not an expert, but to me different sims have pretty different "basics" as you call them. iRacing for instance is quite different in feel than rFactor (realFeel plugin installed), while AC is closer to the feel of rF (at least imho). One of the main differences i usually notice is how the wheel reacts when spinning. If you compare for example iRacing and rFactor, those feel quite different. Again, i'm not an expert, so I wouldn't even know why they are different, but it's what I notice every time i switch.

    Surprisingly, the RFactor2 is ahead of Iracing in terms of physics realism, tire simulation and grip realism. I played them both and as much as seasoned racecar drivers (seasoned, not me) tell they're both very realistic, but Rfactor 2 has the edge in simulating more effects and better.

    When they take a time capsule to 2016 from 2005 graphics and throw in laser scanned tracks they could be truly competitive with the other big sim racers, in my opinion. Multiplayer is virtually non existent so iRacing is more than a cut above in that area. I agree that their ffb and tire model is the best, too bad the rest tends to be lacking. But the bottom line, for me is...all of the big sim racers are lacking in one way or another. There is no perfect one and it really comes down to what you're looking for. It's kind of like dating 4 different girls and they're all hot, but they all have their issues to. Which one to marry? Well, that's a good question. Personally, I lean toward the bachelor choice.

    rF2 is the best driving experience of any current sim. Everything feels "right" when driving, the amount of feel the game gives you helps drivers make saves which are not possible in other sims. The only downsides for me are the lack of content, modders are too lazy to put the effort in, which is a shame as they would be massively rewarded in rF2, compared to other sims where the feel or basic features aren't implemented.

  • @silasandersen6124

    @silasandersen6124

    atomicRAGE Modders are not too lazy to put the effort in, mate. rFactor 2 is just so incredibly advanced in its technology that the average Joe modder can't just spew out content left, right and center like in the old days. The amount of work it takes to create a fully up to standard rF2 track or car for is more than most of us can fathom. The modders that have succeeded, and will succeed in the future, deserve the biggest praise. rFactor 2 is the absolute racing sim benchmark, nothing less.

  • @Loose89

    @Loose89

    ***** I know modding rF2 would be incredibly difficult, but they way most mod teams just don't even bother makes them come across as lazy, and my comment was not aimed at "average Joe" modders, fairly big teams just don't want to put the effort in. Which is a massive shame, as those who have put in the work (URD for example) have made top notch content and with all the hard work in rF2 done, it would be easier for them to port to other sims.

    Metal Sucks Maybe you need to make slight tweaks to your FFB setting? I don't know, but to me and anyone I've raced with who I've asked have nothing but praise for the FFB and car feel. I'm not going to tell you to buy a new wheel, most are overly expensive and not affordable without some saving. As I said above, look into some FFB tweaks, go to the ISI forums and look around or ask and if you can find the right tweaks I'm sure you'll find it to be quite good. If it's not working after all that, then it may be the car/mod your using, because rF2 gives me a feeling unlike any other racing game, let alone sim that I've driven, but that doesn't stop badly made mods from having poor handling or FFB.

    Metal Sucks I'm not telling you to do anything. I used to drive with a G27. rF2 made it feel absolutely fantastic even though it's not a very good wheel. Then I switched to the T500RS. rF2 made that feel 1000 times better. YOu just need to make a few tweaks to bring out the best of rF2's FFB. Read through this guide and make the appropriate adjustments: isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/19034-Guide-Optimal-FFB-settings-for-rFactor-2-The-key-to-being-in-the-Zone-D?p=260089&viewfull=1#post260089

    rF2 not having a strong modding community does not bother me, simply because I don't see it as the successor to rF1. Rather I see rF2 as the successor to GTR2 and AC as rF1's... and I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm an endurance racing nutjob so in my eyes that's the biggest praise any sim can get. Seriously, rF2 is hands down the best sim period if endurance racing is your thing simply due to its featureset. :P

  • @silasandersen6124

    Roshan Torcy AC having tons of mods (most of them quick'n'dirty conversions though) doesn't automatically make it any kind of successor to rF1, far from it in fact. It's about more than simply mods... it's about the core, the incredibly complete list of functional features, the immersion, the customization, the versatility, which both rF1 and now rF2 can brag of having.

  • @associat0r708

    @associat0r708

    9 жыл бұрын

    Roshan Torcy The community should stop spreading this disinformation, because Assetto Corsa is not even in the same league since it's missing so many fundamentally essential simracing features and its physics and AI are objectively and measurably a step backwards that it won't qualify for years to come as even an rFactor 0.5 successor. To be a successor, it has to at least feature all the essentials and physics of its decade old predecessor, and Assetto Corsa isn't even close to that. Meanwhile rFactor2 improves over rFactor1 in every single way that counts, therefore that's the true successor.

  • @RoshanTorcy

    @RoshanTorcy

    9 жыл бұрын

    Associat0r I guess you got so blinded by rage or something seeing AC and rF spoken in the same breath that you missed the point of my post entirely because I was discussing the fact that Jimmy said rF2 had a small modding community. I was talking about AC being rF1's successor in a modding scene sense because it is the more accessible sim to mod out of the two, just like how rF1 was back in the day. It's about how base rF1 had literally minimal value content-wise and it was the huge modding community that made it great, same goes for AC... you would have to be right mad to deny that. But when we look at rF2 it's more akin to GTR2 in a sense that it is the best example of a rounded package out of the box, with a great base content plus a few excellent mods and I'm totally fine with that because GTR2 is my favorite sim of all time and I consider rF2 to be it's equal. All I ever did in rF1 was dick around with mods and never get tired of it and that's *exactly* what I'm using AC for. And I use rF2 purely for multiplayer purposes, it pretty much was the sole reason that I quit iRacing ever since our league made the switch to rf2 and the only cars we use are URD EGT ones since we run endurance events specifically. Also please, since I want to be respectful I will point you to the same MAKcorp thing you keep posting time and time again and I urge you to read the last paragraph thoroughly. www.virtualr.net/meet-simfunding-sim-racing-crowd-funding-platform#comment-1871850631 It says "If you love AC, great for you. If you love rF2 great for you too. Play what you enjoy and respect what others enjoy. Everyone has their own choice after all. :)" And i also request you if it is not a big thing to ask for, to just not comment on my posts in the future, and I will do the same. Since I get no joy in discussing anything with you personally as all you seem to do is bash things that ain't rF2 and that sort of discussion is not really my thing. I don't block people ever so I'm leaving it up to you. Good night and hopefully goodbye, unless you wanna be a creep and stick around.
