S.4 Episode 20-1990 Jaguar V-12 Rags To Riches

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Things have moved a bit slow here at Camp Chaos because of the back-log of work generated by my health issues over the past year. But the last several months have seen an uptick in productivity since I've gotten a handle of the health side and we're beginning to be able to look to the future a bit. One of the things I aways wanted to do was to have a couple different variants of the Jaguar V-12 ready on the shelf so the customer can exchange his old busted junk for a fresh overhaul in a couple of weeks time. This 1990 5.3L will be the first of the class of '24 and speaking of busted junk...oooohhhh mommy. But my track car's engine was almost as bad. If you're interested in the details, contact me at robert@jaguarpreserve.com

Bob, I've had the same problem with main bearings, and as the Jaguar bearings are limited, I've had crank ground and used Ford 460 bearings as mains. While not quite as wide as Jaguar, work fine as high quality spec bearings are available, use them in race engines running to 7500 rpm.

Thank you so much!! I try to do the best I can with the time and mental acuity I have left. 😬

Another great inspection video. This may already be in your eventual video timeline, but a video on crank repair (flame spray etc) re-grinding and the re-nitride process would be interesting, as well as offset grinding for displacement (if that ever becomes thing possible to film.)

The repair of that journal would make a good Tuesday Extra. Metal spray is something I'm looking at related to camshaft modification.

Bob, can you please expand on the need for new pistons? I bought a set of used UK spec pistons and liners with my '79 XJ12. I was hoping to use them when I rebuild the engine some day since they have slightly higher compression. If they clean up well and fall into spec, why wouldn't they be usable? BTW, I enjoy your channel and you are an inspiration!

An interesting vlog Bob, if the block wasn't scrap, how would you have gone about getting the cut studs out of the block?

After the liners are removed I use an old fashioned stud puller that usually damages the stud beyond re-use. But that ship has already sailed.

Have you got a link to a supplier for the parts? I've been thinking of going in that general direction. Especially since we've recently gotten a very interesting engine in the shop. More on that this friday.😉

Great video Bob but why was it so bad (the crank etc)? Was it just driven very hard?

I suspect it’s a victim of the Jaguar V 12 HE death spiral. Lack of maintenance particularly oil changes, bearings wear, less bypass oil through the cooler, oil gets screamin’ hot, bypass fully closes to keep oil at the bearings, then you’re done oil gets too hot to work properly.

Another great video Bob.. I'm glad you're doing well.. there's nothing worse and sad at the step of a strip down and the block is worthless.. hurts everytime.. also where do you buy those better head stud's.. ARP doesn't make a set.. you mentioned once you found better OEM style stud's. Thanks and keep up the great work.. you are a machine.. hopefully you have a good help/apprentice..

I will be offering those studs on the website in the upcoming months. ARP does make a stud set but they wait until they get enough orders logged to make a run. Who's got time for that?
