S4:Episode22-Jaguar V-12 Starter In Rehab.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Another day in the life of a Jag-o-phile. Always something to repair/refurb. Oh well...if you daily drive an old classic car, thats how it goes. Todays project is the rehabilitation of the starter in my 1990 Jaguar XJS convertible.

Sounded pretty good with the exhaust pipe off. Great video.

I had a starter in one of my early cars where the solenoid contacts that energized the motor were worn unevenly. The thicker contact was keeping the thinner one from closing. Fixed it by filing down the thick one so both closed simultaneously.

I recently R+R'd the starter in my X305. To guide my multiple feet of socket extensions to the upper bolt, I pointed my Canon M200 at it from above and watched the wireless live view on my phone. The 12-pt bolt got replaced with an allen head.

@@XCLURICHAUN Once you know where you're pointing your socket, you don't need the camera or endoscope so much. For the first time though, it's a huge help!

Bob. Another great video. I love it when you show how to disassemble, name the parts and then reassemble pointing out the tricky bits. I also have a V12 1990 XJ-S but it doesn’t have catalytic converters on it - presumably they were for the US market and some other non-UK markets? Anyway, keep up the great work and laconic narratives! Peter

For those plastic clips that hold the brushes in, I would suggest looking for someone who has a 3d printer. Your local high school or college would be a good place to look.

Nice Video! Thank you! Those clips that hold the brushes sure are prone to failure! Why on earth did they use plastic?! 😅 Greetings from Germany! Cheers!

The gear reductions starter looks just like taking apart a winch. I've taken apart regular starters but that's the first time I've seen a gear reductions starter taken down. I do believe that starters can also fail because of corrosion between the shells creating a bad ground pathway to the engine block. One would think that pro starter rebuild places could get or would have on-hand those retainers new, but they'd be easily 3D printable otherwise. I"ve snuck some similar motors back togehter using a thin stiff loop of plastic sheet in a kind of cone fashion then removed it as the contact end was beginning to go in. Have you thought about adding WOSP etc gear reductions starters to your website? IDK if it could be done in a drop ship situation or not.

Thank you for making this video. You have given me the confidence to R, R & R my starter. I have an '88 XJS w/ the big starter that had no heat shield but in my starter search found what seems to be a rare original heat shield in great condition (the only one I have ever seen for sale) from a used parts dealer. There are others that detail the removal and install work if needed but looks self-explanatory to a shade tree/barn mechanic like myself. It's your Indepth knowledge of the Jag v-12 as well as how you explain the 3 W's of what you are sharing that is so appreciated. I have learned a ton from your videos... however I am still wanting to tig weld my own headers-LoL! 1 question I have is about the cat inside the down pipe, why would removing this cause a lean A/F mixture with EFI? Thanks again for all the extra work you do to share your knowledge of these cars!

Sorry for the late reply. The O2 sensor is downstream from the cats and the unburned fuel would make the computer think the mixture is rich. I found ths out the hard way with the track car. Completely out of breath at 120 Mph.
