No accident that, in spite of steady media amplification about the benefits of running, since about 1980, the activity remains unpopular: People try it, and not only do they not see/feel any benefit, or see only marginal benefit, compared its immense physical and psychological challenge, but it often leaves you feeling ragged, spent, and irritable. Then, too, about 20% of the cardio translates into upper body conditioning, which is why I found it a silly waste of time for boxing, wrestling, and especially gymnastics. Also, running gets you ambushed by all sorts of injuries-- gnats getting in your eyes, sprained ankles, shin splints, the notorious knee issues and mysterious low-back pain, sabotaging simple daily tasks; get bitten by a dog, hit by a reckless kid on a bicycle, maybe even get run-over by a car. The weather is insufferably harrassing. In the Army, we ran five miles on Monday, ten on Wednesday, fifteen on Friday. When I got out, I stopped running. No more feeling drained, and no more feeling harrassed with injuries. I continued boxing and lifting weights, however, because I continued seeing and feeling benefits. I saw more benefit, since running no longer competed for recovery. For cardio, I ride a bike around the problems of running.

Great video, Jack!! I’m honestly really surprised that endorphins aren’t the cause of that runner’s high sort of feeling - I’m gonna have to tell my students that I was unintentionally lying to them about endorphins and aerobic exercise 🤣 Such a well-researched topic and excellent edits/visual aids…well done 🥳

Adult human neurogenesis is highly contested, new studies show little evidence

could you please elaborate? I was told that recent research tends to be more in favour of the idea that adult human neurogenesis is a thing.

Most recent data shows no evidence - directly from one of the top journals, Nature Neuroscience: "Single-nucleus sequencing finds no adult hippocampal neurogenesis in humans" by Shari Wiseman, 2021

I agree that it’s contested but through my search of the literature, I’ve seen the pushback against adult neurogenesis. There’s a lot of literature to back up adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. I agree there’s more to be researched. I’ll keep it in mind to mention the nuance in future videos though. Appreciate the feedback.

I'm running for around 35-40 mins, but I do not know if my intensity is ok, since I run by myself and would feel weird to start talking..! However, I do measure my speed which avgs at 9.5 km/h. Do you know if that is good intensity? Also, yeah, I'd love to see the weight lifting video too. I used to weight lift in the past a lot, and was considering going back to it - but even if I wasn't, I still find it very interesting

Okay I'll start planning the weight lifting video now! In terms of intensity, it's a very personal thing in my opinion. You could go down the quantitative route of 70-80% of your VO2 max (220 - age) but I'd just call a friend on your run and see if they shout at you for breathing too loudly 😂 it's up to you!

@@JackClose The friend idea would be good, if all my friends weren't so sedentary... If they came with me, it'd be to sit on the bleachers and cheer me on on every lap! Now, I am pretty satisfied running 30-40 mins, 2-3 days a week, for the time being. However, today I monitored this VO2 thing (!) and it seems I go above the proper percentage. My VO2 max being 171, if my watch monitors my pulses properly, I range between 150-170... I did have a heart check up in October though, triplex and stuff, and all were in perfect order... Anyway, looking forward to the weight video!

Does the corpus callosum have significant effects on intelligence I saw that Einstein had a bigger one than the average person also saw the left handed and ambidextrous people have bigger ones than right handed people. Kind of a random question but thought maybe you’d have an idea since you seem to be interested in neuroscience. Enjoyed the vid by the way.
