The connection between running and the brain: By Neuroscientist Ben Martynoga

Спорт

Ben Martynoga is a British neuroscientist. For most of the last two decades, Ben has been in labs around the world, studying the brain trying to understand how it works and in particular how it grows and takes shape. Ben has partnered with Saucony to help shine a light on the fascinating connection between running and the brain, and how the sport can have a positive impact on our state of mind and help tune out distractions of everyday life.

    Very true, and that’s partly because in that hour (or however many minutes) you are running you are NOT thinking about your problems or issues, you are probably thinking ‘gosh my heart is burning; ouch this hurts so bad; I can’t breathe!’ - and in those minutes your issues/problems are out of your head even for that one hour in 24 hours. And that turns out to be very beneficial for your mental health - your problems escape you for just that moment. Something my doctor told me 😊.

    Fascinating stuff, I regularly lift weights and occasionally run when its ok weather. Definitely noticed that running is far more beneficial for me mentally than lifting. I should start running more often

  • @oxxy6678

    @oxxy6678

    It is. As someone who lifts frequently, I acknowledge that lifting is kind of an "anti exercise" in that most people think lifting weights counts as exercise and gives you all the benefits, when in reality it doesnt. It doesnt make your heart stronger, it doesnt make you feel better, it pretty much just LOOKS like hard work. Using a combination of running with my mental health medication I am happier than 90% of people, I always feel good. I run every day as soon as I get up, and I dont have bad days any more. Literally.

    i've gotten it from swimming as well. more times from swimming actually than running. i am led to believe, anecdotally of course, that its the 'steady state' your body is in that probably triggers all the aforementioned benefits, i would be surprised if its actually linked strictly/exclusively to the activity of running.

I've lifted for years and running (only been doing it for a few months now) made a far greater difference in my mental health, general wellbeing and cognitive function. Lifting does help you look better which is good for confidence, but you still feel like something is missing. You're strong but you get out of breath from walking up hills; heavy squat sessions would feel like a cardio exercise too.

    I started easy due to my past knee injury running 2, 3, 4 laps and I can run 5 laps non stop now. In the beginning I would be out breath by 2 laps so I definitely feel an improvement in my heart and body. I feel accomplished even though this might seem nothing to many runners out there. I'm happy I'm sticking with my goal of doing it 3x a week and slowly increasing my laps. It snowed recently here and I just ran on ice the other day and did 5 laps. I feel proud that I didn't find an excuse to stay home and now the ice has melted it just makes it easier mentally going forward. One day I'll be able to run 13 laps non stop which is 5km!

When I got out at 21 yrs old I lifted weights heavy low reps and partially 10 to 12 reps. For 30 years, kettlebell lifting, u name it I done it..but running I have notice does more for my mind and you mention all of them.. it's hard for me to start but after I run a mile ( 5.5 to 6 total) start feeling better and I do get that runners high and feel better physical than lifting weights..

So, how do people get through what I just described because what I described is why almost 90% of the people that I know don't run. So, how do you get that feeling that you're describing? EDIT: 1:37... Oh, "serious runners" which I'm not. So not everyone can benefit unless you're a serious runner... So, what exactly is a serious runner?

    Funny, I'm just reading Anna Karenina (easier because of the running? dunno, but it is zero pain), and Tolstoy actually describes the "flow state"/zen-experience of one main character, picking up mowing (with a scythe) for the entire day. Basically, don't stop and it will just happen, since you will just run longer, further, more often without having to drag yourself, give that 3 months, and it'll be like, "Oh, I forgot I'm running. Well, or who is doing it really?? ..." n/k
