I learn as you all do the revelation regarding « emotional, financial, verbal and physical abuse » from Scott Kelly against his family (wife and children). These acts are things we all condemn and based on my experience as a human being, and as therapist, I could say many more things about the way abuses are treated in our western societies. As always in this case the question is raised of the link between the man and the artist ? First : Neurosis can not be reduced to Scott Kelly. I admire the dignity, and the discretion the band showed towards the family. « We did not share this information out of respect for his wife’s direct request for privacy, and to honor the family’s wish not to let their experience become gossip in a music magazine. » We can take into account the pain they face from Kelly’s musical brothers standpoint though it can not be compared to what his family might have been through. Once, Phil Anselmo made a Nazi Salute which is a thing that we can not excuse either. Does it prevent Far beyond driven to be one of the greatest metal album of all time ? To answer Yes, we should have to prove a relationship between the artistic content and the personal history like some philosophy historians do about Martin Heidegger writings. I don’t see anything in Neurosis music that would be an encouragement to commit abuses and I can still say that they are one of the greatest band ever. Still, for Kelly the darkness and the Neurosis was there for good or took over through the years. His biggest mistake was to decline help, and now that he admitted the facts I hope he will find a way to cure himself and repair the damage done if it’s something possible. Music is not a therapy for the creator or shows its limits when we expect from art something than art can not provide. We are also sad to realize that now, Neurosis won’t release other albums, or go on tour. This video is meant to share their music and the greatness they gave to us. I expect comments here to have the same dignity the band showed. This is the best way we can help.

Ahh my friend. Neurosis is not a band to just listen to. If a person is just listening they will never come close to getting it. Humans are afraid of facing all their pain, that endless deep well of ache within them. All their inner darkness that keeps them unconscious and blind. Afraid of facing all the lies of their thoughts. Neurosis is strictly a band that you must 'Surrender" to. You must fully surrender to the music. And purge purge purge, and purge some more. The ego-thinking mind is afraid of surrendering. As everything in the mind is a total lie. The Prison of the Mind. Do not fall into the trap of trying to understand Neurosis with your mind. Because you will never be able to understand them with your thinking mind. As thoughts can only operate in duality, and duality is total illusion in reality. Neurosis has the ability to totally transform your ideas of what you believe music is. The real magical art of music. And Neurosis can broaden your horizons of creativity that you never knew existed. That are all far beyond words, and far beyond any concepts and far beyond any ideologies of the mind. Listen to Neurosis' entire discography over the next 3 to 6 months, alone, and fully let go, and fully surrender to it. Mold yourself into their music and let it seep into you deeply... honestly. Like when you see drops on a window on a rainy day, as the drops accumulate and mesh together and fall slowly, allow their music to fall slowly into you the same way. And more and more deeper, and don't let your thoughts get in the way. Do not think. Eye feel that Neurosis' album " A Sun that Never Sets" is the perfect starter album for someone new to Neurosis to experiment this with. The more pain you experience by surrendering to their music, the more healing you will receive with the many hidden teachings in the music, and "allow" it to flow through you. Because the immense beauty of the high consciousness of this band is far deeper than mere words, as lyrics are merely at the surface of images, and this magical band of beauty is far beyond any "images" . Truth is ALWAYS Paradoxical ;-) Raze The Stray ... Raze The Stray ... Raze The Stray !!! Someone in another video said that they finally understood Neurosis by smoking some Hash. I did this years and years ago accompanied by 6 beers + Hash. LOL. Neurosis + Hash can break down anyone to the core. Honey oil hash with Neurosis is only for the bravest of the brave. It's definitely not at the powerful depths of Ayahuasca, but it's strong. Step by step by step by step, as we face all the lies of our thoughts. Add some good hash and Neurosis can totally deconstruct and dismantle you nicely. The only cures for pain is hidden perfectly deep within the pain (while everyone else in society avoids it). This is something they will never teach you in any school, or in any church. Nothing is more liberating than fully facing all your darkness deep within that is far beyond the mind of thoughts. The only path to the light is by fully facing all the emptiness and darkness within. Infinite teachings of bliss and beauty far beyond any words ;-)

Oh god man, that section in “My heart for Deliverance” is one of the single most intense things ever recorded. I have a shit ton of fav bands. King Crimson, Sabbath.. the list is a mile long. However Neurosis is extremely close to my heart in a way that I can’t explain. They’ve helped me get through some very tough times in my life including the loss of a father. I think they are a perfect weapon to get through this crazy world we live in hopefully in one piece!🤘

I have a pretty interesting history with the whole Neurosis experience. Needless to say, I agree 100% with this video. To me, there is no second place other than maybe Black Sabbath. I think of Neurosis in a sort of similar manner as I do Sabbath. Each band member was an absolute irreplaceable piece of their puzzle. My first Neurosis experience was back in 1996. I saw them open for Pantera and Biohazard. I had never even heard of them before. Nothing in this world could have prepared for that moment. I was completely sucked into their cathartic world of sight and sound. Back then they used a video projector of all kinds of ambient footage while they played live. Seeing Scott and Steve banging on the drums in unison with the drummer (as you described) was unlike anything I ever witnessed. This concert was right before Through Silver in Blood came out. I immediately went to my local music store and asked if they had this record, and they didn't know anything about them. I kept trying to find this record. This was back in the early days of the internet, so it wasn't as simple as looking on KZread, etc... Eventually, I found a used copy of Souls at Zero on CD. It was the original Alternative Tentacles label version. I became so obsessed with that album, even to this day it's probably my favorite album of all time. I can't remember what order the rest of the albums came to me, but I got them all. Through Silver, Enemy of the Sun, the first two, Times of Grace and all of their incredible albums after that. I have went through phases where I could tell you Times of Grace was my favorite, then a few years later, I might say A Sun That Never Sets was my favorite, etc... All of their albums are essential. Neurosis were the band that introduced me to art. I grew up a metalhead. But Neurosis opened up to me what art is all about. I was fortunate enough to see them live many times, including Ozzfest ('97 I think). Thanks for sharing this video. I really enjoyed it. It's cool to see what other people's experiences with this band are like. I would recommend people go check out their album 'A Sun That Never Sets'. Neurosis accomplished something truly incredible with this record. I also back everyone else's comment about Souls At Zero. It's hard to believe that it even exists, or CAN exist. The fact is, is that it does exist! Thank God. Listen to the song 'The Web', in particular. To Crawl Under One's Skin, The title track, every song and instrument comes together like a perfect symphony. Also, as far as samples go, SAZ is my favorite album of theirs when it comes to how the used samples. One more thing, I want to say about A Sun That Never Sets: They could have taken the easy path and made a Times of Grace: Part 2. But those guys are true artists. They will just blow your mind into a million pieces with any of our expectations.

I loved the video for a Sun that Never Sets as much as I loved the Times/Neurot thing, was a huge part of my life at the time, although I still say the previous three was peak Neurosis. The early years, including Souls which is a great album, is their early Crust youth, which undoubtedly is part of who they are. The years after A Sun were them aging into the more prog/stoner years, which is hugely influential to a lot of bands today, I would say MORE SO than the aforementioned era.

Neurosis has been my favorite band for over fifteen years now. Everything you said I pretty well agree with, but I would say that I think Through Silver In Blood was their first REAL album. Not literally, just that I feel that's when they really found their sound, or the sound that I love from them. Literally every song on every album from that album forth, has been gold. I found this video by accident but it was a good watch, thank you for your content!

I agree with your wonderful encapsulation of Neurosis. I think they might be the greatest band in the world. They certainly played the most impressive concert I have had the privilege to attend. It was in Melbourne before the release of Fires Within Fires so it was something of a best of concert. It was the most extraordinary concert I have attended. It was like being present at the cosmic Big Bang. Slow percussive start then the crushing riffs! It went on for 2 hours, pummelled by the massive sound. Clothes vibrating and flattened against you body, but the noise crystal clear. I am still in awe of what I witnessed that night. I've seen hundreds of concerts by all the big names ranging from Tool, NIN, ISIS ,The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and many more, but Neurosis made them all seem miniature. I'm an old guy and consider the Soft Machine , Magma and King Crimson as favourite bands but Neurosis puts them in the shade. (maybe not Magma). I was rapt and still am. Fuck!!

I disagree, the first real transition towards post metal is Souls at Zero, not later. This is the second album with Steve Von Till, and the first album where they really go into those long more elaborate songs, with different instruments like violin and trumpets. It's not as complex as what Tool would later do (and still be called post metal), Neurosis is more raw, and more visceral. But it's already there in Souls at Zero. The issue is that the production is a bit lacking, and the first real Neurosis crazy heavy wall of guitar is Enemy of the Sun. But Souls at Zero already has the apocalyptic atmosphere, it's just a lot colder sound and high pitched sounding (especially the guitars) than on the later albums. The best Neurosis albums, that fans usually prefer (at least the european fans that I know better than american fans), are the period from Souls at Zero until Times of Grace. These 4 albums are masterpieces, with almost nothing to throw away. A Sun that Never Sets starts a new period for the band. Dave Edwardson doesn't sing anymore, there are many more post rock parts, fewer instruments, it's more simple and melancholic rather than apocalyptic and explosive. So the explosions, when they do happen, are more noticeable. The Eye of Every Storm is even more simple, almost empty, or rather barren. We also lose almost completely the industrial samples that Noah Landis used to have. At this point, a lot of fans were a bit confused about where the band was going, diving so much into post rock. So it almost feels like they tried to return to their old nature with Given To The Rising, except in my opinion they quite failed. The production is weird, and although they try to go back to something raw and promordial, it feels weird. I never listen to this album. While I still go back to A Sun... and The Eye.. And then we get to Honor... the worst album since The World As Law. It's not awful, but it's like the band doing a parody of themselves... We All Rage in Gold for example, is just a bad song, with the uninspired riff, the awful post rock parts, the weak singing... The album still has Albini's amazing sound for it, but that's all. There are some good moments, but it feels long, tired... Like the band has no energy and not much to say anymore. At this point I had given up with the band, but luckily Fires within Fires still showed the band had some energy left. It felt like a nice little fun album. It's quite short for Neurosis, and it's straight to the point. Good riffs, good energy, although still that apocalyptic vibe. It's probably the last record the band will ever put out with the Scott Kelly debacle, but I'm glad it's not a terrible one. Overall I still listen to Souls, Enemy, Through Silver and Times, those albums are eternal, and nothing has come close since in terms of intensity and power, except maybe This Gift is A Curse - I, Guilt Bearer (check it out if you want a really angry Neurosis).

Why is Neurosis the best band in the world? Because they never gave a fudge about what anybody else thought.

1:40 out of every comment ever said on a youtube video, this is probably the one that did not age well beyond all such other possible comments. Damn. That said, still love them. Maybe love them now that they are just flawed humans and not gods? Also to be fair, they peaked with the unholy trinity (which is fitting, really) Enemy, Through Silver, and Times. THAT is peak Neurosis, and all three are quite different. I have a tattoo that combines Times and Tribes albums, its basically the back of the shirt and the image on the tribes album. One of my favorite tattoos!
