I disagree, the first real transition towards post metal is Souls at Zero, not later. This is the second album with Steve Von Till, and the first album where they really go into those long more elaborate songs, with different instruments like violin and trumpets. It's not as complex as what Tool would later do (and still be called post metal), Neurosis is more raw, and more visceral. But it's already there in Souls at Zero. The issue is that the production is a bit lacking, and the first real Neurosis crazy heavy wall of guitar is Enemy of the Sun. But Souls at Zero already has the apocalyptic atmosphere, it's just a lot colder sound and high pitched sounding (especially the guitars) than on the later albums. The best Neurosis albums, that fans usually prefer (at least the european fans that I know better than american fans), are the period from Souls at Zero until Times of Grace. These 4 albums are masterpieces, with almost nothing to throw away. A Sun that Never Sets starts a new period for the band. Dave Edwardson doesn't sing anymore, there are many more post rock parts, fewer instruments, it's more simple and melancholic rather than apocalyptic and explosive. So the explosions, when they do happen, are more noticeable. The Eye of Every Storm is even more simple, almost empty, or rather barren. We also lose almost completely the industrial samples that Noah Landis used to have. At this point, a lot of fans were a bit confused about where the band was going, diving so much into post rock. So it almost feels like they tried to return to their old nature with Given To The Rising, except in my opinion they quite failed. The production is weird, and although they try to go back to something raw and promordial, it feels weird. I never listen to this album. While I still go back to A Sun... and The Eye.. And then we get to Honor... the worst album since The World As Law. It's not awful, but it's like the band doing a parody of themselves... We All Rage in Gold for example, is just a bad song, with the uninspired riff, the awful post rock parts, the weak singing... The album still has Albini's amazing sound for it, but that's all. There are some good moments, but it feels long, tired... Like the band has no energy and not much to say anymore. At this point I had given up with the band, but luckily Fires within Fires still showed the band had some energy left. It felt like a nice little fun album. It's quite short for Neurosis, and it's straight to the point. Good riffs, good energy, although still that apocalyptic vibe. It's probably the last record the band will ever put out with the Scott Kelly debacle, but I'm glad it's not a terrible one. Overall I still listen to Souls, Enemy, Through Silver and Times, those albums are eternal, and nothing has come close since in terms of intensity and power, except maybe This Gift is A Curse - I, Guilt Bearer (check it out if you want a really angry Neurosis).
maybe and thanks for this comment. Hope you agree with other commentaries.
Over time neurosis has become in my zone of well-being. They has that sound that never get old.
my pleasure, it is meaning ful to share it. Take care and share if you loved it
Thank you for honoring my favorite musical artists of all time. Im so glad to see others sharing the same ideas and feelings about their art.
my pleasure, this kind of messages make things worth. Please share if you enjoyed it
Why is Neurosis the best band in the world? Because they never gave a fudge about what anybody else thought.
i have used that triangle beater to hit strings into an analog delay trick to make noise... :)
hum interesting :) would be curious to listen to this
@@RealSoundReviews do it then! hit the string various ways, then play with the delay time so you can change the pitch of the noises. figure out what you need for whatever effect you are trying to create...i was doing it to make scary horror movie sounding noises for a gothic song i was playing.
Times of Grace. And yes- see them live if you has the possability. Thank u for a nice take!
one of the most in depth and intuitive analysis of Neurosis - it's music, motivation, lyrics and vision. absolutely great. thank you.
the "REVERB" knob on the holy grail is a mix knob. at 12:00 the dry signal is 100% and the wet signal is 100%. beyond 12:00 you are removing the dry signal. with the knob all the way right only the wet signal gets through, which might surprise some as being mainly high end*. the reverb knob on your amp does not mix the dry and wet signals like the holy grail does, which is why it sounded different. *(if you make two copies of your signal, phase invert one and send it through a Fender Reverb Unit, then sum them, you will see the wet output of the FRU is actually mainly high end).
What's the song at starting at 14:59?
My heart for deliverance from Honor found in decay
@@RealSoundReviews Thank you very much!
My favorite thing about Neurosis is that if I'm not mistaken, Steve von Till is a middle school teacher when they're not on tour. Imagine growing up and getting interested in metal and then realizing your teacher fronted one of the most amazing bands to have ever existed. Sad I have to talk about them in the past tense, but we can all thank that to Scott Kelly.
ohhh I learn that from you. thanks
1:40 out of every comment ever said on a youtube video, this is probably the one that did not age well beyond all such other possible comments. Damn. That said, still love them. Maybe love them now that they are just flawed humans and not gods? Also to be fair, they peaked with the unholy trinity (which is fitting, really) Enemy, Through Silver, and Times. THAT is peak Neurosis, and all three are quite different. I have a tattoo that combines Times and Tribes albums, its basically the back of the shirt and the image on the tribes album. One of my favorite tattoos!
The greatest of all time. Jesus lays in mud so they dont get dirty.
I agree with your wonderful encapsulation of Neurosis. I think they might be the greatest band in the world. They certainly played the most impressive concert I have had the privilege to attend. It was in Melbourne before the release of Fires Within Fires so it was something of a best of concert. It was the most extraordinary concert I have attended. It was like being present at the cosmic Big Bang. Slow percussive start then the crushing riffs! It went on for 2 hours, pummelled by the massive sound. Clothes vibrating and flattened against you body, but the noise crystal clear. I am still in awe of what I witnessed that night. I've seen hundreds of concerts by all the big names ranging from Tool, NIN, ISIS ,The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and many more, but Neurosis made them all seem miniature. I'm an old guy and consider the Soft Machine , Magma and King Crimson as favourite bands but Neurosis puts them in the shade. (maybe not Magma). I was rapt and still am. Fuck!!
Great to hear Steve's insights, Cruel Nature is an incredible label!
yes a great person thanks for watching and share if you loved :)
Times of grace and through silver and blood are one of my favorites in metal but TSAB does more to me in terms of atmosphere, the use of samples and the drones and drumming in these album are the best in my experience in pulling into the atmosphere of the album...
Yeah true. There are many aspects to their music even if one can recognize immediately their style. I am not sure they ever did an album which was average just different from the one before, surprising. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and please share if you enjoyed. 🤗🔗👍🔥
Have yet to hear an AI master that retains or improves Emotive impact. It usually sounds flat. It's almost as if they're just sending a song through a converter on some auto-setting that might work for multiple genres, and then going, "okay, it's done!" Once AI can do something as impressive as Ted Jensen, or even somewhat close, I'll become a believer.
absolutely ! this is why I made another video on this topic. Maor is one the greatest. Thanks for your comment.
@@RealSoundReviews such great editing in this interview, I like how you'd do a cut to your own face at times, even if just to nod, to bring life to the conversation- it had a way of reminding me that we're not focusing on a one-sided monologue, but felt Natural, in the course of a conversation. Mind you, I was listening more than watching, but did notice this Extra Effort you put into the presentation of your video... and it resulted in a very professional product. Yes, I'm going to have to watch that video on AI, and subscribe :)
@@lashtal oh thanks man ! few people understand this kind of subtleties unfortunately. It can be listened to as a podcast indeed. main thing is to have meaningful questions. Much appreciated
I first saw them as an opener in '93. It made an impact. They did a lot of touring.
Yes. They are a great live band as well you are totally right to mention this. Thanks for your comment and please share if you loved it. Bests ;)
A sun that never sets. It's a magnificent album that, at least to me tells the story of trial and loss. Everytime I play that album it hits home.
Thanks for sharing! Please share if you enjoyed. This album is special and matter to me as well
This Ladies and Gentlemen is what youd call *History In The Making* . 👏👏👏 Fans of all would flock to this very Creation. Sucked right into it's Trance just like The Rest of us. 🚬🥃🎚️📻🎵🧲🫀🤌
Easily one of the most important bands within metal and hardcore
Thanks for this encouraging comment. Please share if you enjoyed it. My bests
Neurosis and Today is the Day shares the top spot for me.
Thanks for watching, thx for this comment 🙏
Neurosis Electric Wizard Tool
Yes ❤
Yup
oh ! I remember music by you published on a french label called Naninani 15 years ago !
@@RealSoundReviews :)
As soon as I read 'the Best Band in the world' I was 100% in agreement with you before watching the video. Who on earth can possibly beat them? They are the best band I've seen live by miles and miles, no contest.
thanks for enthusiasm and feelings. Please share if you loved it :)
Souls at Zero and Enemy of the Sun got me into Neurosis, but then Through Silver in Blood came out. All of my favorite songs are on that record and it basically changed my life. And as a drummer myself, I’m rather offended that you didn’t mention Jason Roeder.
Thanks for your comment. Please share if you enjoyed it. Neurosis is an influence for so many musicians.
eye of every storm.....i think thats the title.
r e a l l y a very nice s t o r y
Before seeing the vid. Ill say just because. Now let's see.
I regret selling my blue Akai delay version of this.
How to say a lot and still say nothing at all...🙄😏
It's interesting that you add nothing to nothing then 😂 try again ...
Thank you I am about to get one for my P-Bass for blues … think it will add some great oomph
Best band 100%, my favourite album is eye of every storm. So sad to learn about Kelly
Neurosis has been my favorite band for over fifteen years now. Everything you said I pretty well agree with, but I would say that I think Through Silver In Blood was their first REAL album. Not literally, just that I feel that's when they really found their sound, or the sound that I love from them. Literally every song on every album from that album forth, has been gold. I found this video by accident but it was a good watch, thank you for your content!
What about tribes of me right and by the way no I had sex with my ex-wife
One of the greatest bands ever for me. Right up there with Sabbath, Crimson, Enslaved, Isis and Can.
Great video!
Souls at Zero is a really great record. Its not as dense as a record like Times of Grace, but its absolutely worth revisiting. Word as Law and Pain of Mind are fantastic hardcore records as well that I think deserve more attention.
Thanks for your contribution indeed. My position is to mention that I don't know something well. Bests !
🤩 great
19:57: "Bit of Farts"
WTF 😳🤣🤣 He may as well fiddled about with an old transistor radio .. sorry Fella I don’t get it …🤷♂️😂🤣😳😂🤣
I appreciate your deep dive into neruosis I've tried to introduce them to other people and they don't get it . Luckily my best friend is a fan as big as me. I have someone to go through the journey of there music
There the symphonic sound for disturbed souls that's how I describe them
Quite funny as I’m extremely careful but when taking my 8th gen NUC apart to put into the same case the Wi-Fi section on the motherboard came off so agree with what you say about it not being so easy.Bluetooth is fine. First time I’ve ever had that! After using it for windows I’ve been getting annoyed by poor USB Wi-Fi dongles. Found an adapter that lets you use the NVMe slot for a Mac wifi card so when that comes this week I’ll make the same system you have but with native support for airdrop etc. The fanless setting is not for this case. It basically turns off the fans in the normal case but massively throttles the performance. You can actually push the NUC in this case more than the normal case. There are various tips on the exact temperature ranges to set but you need to create a custom fan control profile. Lots of good guides on the net and that should stop the crashes you are getting.
thanks, now we have very silent options when buying a mac :)
A Sun That Never Sets is so raw and emotive. Personally, life changing.
thanks for sharing ! Yeah From the Hill, for example is so intense, so dear to my heart. Pure stoner combined with Grunge rock emotions. Sure Cobain would have done some music with them like he did with the Melvins IMO.
Great review.
🙏thanks all the best in 2023 and share if you enjoyed:)
IT doesn't track that well does it.... any ideas on how to help it track better? I have it and it was a disappointment. The way you use it though turns its weakness to something interesting. A drone can always use some unpredictability and movement.
Thanks for your comment. I think it depends on the clarity of the input signal and sometimes the defects of a gear can be turned to the benefits of music. For example in another video I took advantage of a glitch of the head rush. Have a nice end of year. Greetings :)
@@RealSoundReviews I just saw a video with the Pigtronix MOTHERSHIP I think .... tracking is enhanced with a compressed signal .... he used distortion. I'll try it. Thanks ...Same to you.
Cuz they ain't 💩
Another Great Pedal effect by Janis Altmanis. The Laika Plusma is an amazing reverb. Enjoy, subscribe and share.
Phenomenal video! If you aren’t already familiar with them you should check out the band Don Caballero, incredible math rock band and very early adopters of glitch looping with the Akai Headrush. Listen to The Peter Criss Jazz
thanks man !
