ROGUE CLASS GUIDE - PATHFINDER 2E
Ойындар
The Rogue in Pathfinder Second Edition is easily the most complicated iteration of the class in any system. In this class guide, I'll go over everything from class features to feat from level 1-20. Strap in, because this is a long one.

I want to take a moment to defend the "oh, I actually do have this item" feats. I know you complained about them in the Investigator video, but they crop up again here and I just want to go to bat for them. It's just a different playstyle. The rogue and the investigator are both trying to appeal to the same character fantasy; the always-prepared clever scoundrel who always has just the right item for the situation. Problem: Adventuring gear can cost a lot of money, especially when runes and magic items are also monopolizing your valuable gold. It's not the end of the world if you don't have climbing gear when you suddenly happen upon a sheer cliff, but it can be annoying when you concept your character as "I'm prepared for anything, and I've got a tool for every situation!", and then the GM keeps throwing you into the situations you haven't prepared for. This allows you to worry less about "hmm, do I need FOUR of these items or can I get away with only three" and worry more about investing in the runes that Pathfinder 2e literally expects you to keep up to date on. I'd like to use an example from the current game I'm GMing. I'm running a 5e game with some friends. Two of them are completely new to DnD, one is a bit of a space-case and forgets things easily, and the last is a little frazzled from essentially being the team dad and sometimes being the only one who knows what he's doing (bless him). These players have so much to worry about that I really don't want to grill them over their inventory. Every time they run into a situation, they look down at their inventory, they see nothing that actually helps them, and then they just sit there and wonder why they're carrying around all this useless shit. It feels upsetting to feel like you picked all the wrong items, especially when you're new and you don't even realize those can be important. Not only that, but these players...they tend to forget they have shit a lot. Like, a LOT. Like, as in I gave them a really fancy and cool magic item from a dungeon with a neat name, they discussed it over the course of the next week as to who should get primary dibs on it, and then come next session I asked "so what are you guys doing with (magic item)?", and one of the players just asked me "what (magic item)?" So I implemented a new house rule: the Inventory Die. Essentially I removed their inventories and instead assigned each class an Inventory Die. Any time my players want to use a mundane item that would help them that they can reasonably explain to me why they'd have it, they get to pull it out and they roll their inventory die. If they roll above a 2, they're fine, nothing happens. If they roll a 1 or a 2, their inventory die goes down a step. So a character with a d8 inventory could suffer 3 total failures on their inventory roll before they're spent (d8 fails into d6, d6 fails into d4, d4 fails into an empty backpack). The larger your inventory die, the more readily you can dig into your pack for random items before you start to run out of supplies. If you have a lower die size, you may want to try to find other ways to solve your problems before you end up completely spent. They don't have to track an inventory they don't fully understand, they don't run into problems where they forget the shit they already have, and they get to solve problems creatively on the spot rather than trying to preemptively solve every problem in the store before the adventure happens, which also means when they do go shopping, it's for very flashy things that have impact rather than "i need more fukken caltrops". I run cinematic games, so I'm less concerned with tracking everything in their backpacks and more concerned with seeing someone pull out a clutch item at just the right moment and save the day.
@NemisCassander
Жыл бұрын
That Inventory Die idea is genius. I'd be very interested in knowing how you assigned them to the different classes.
@kythian
Жыл бұрын
@@NemisCassander I want to say I've seen the inventory die somewhere before, some system that worked to simplify certain of the more tedious aspects of RPGs, but I can't recall where. However, one alternative would be to charge the characters a set amount of money to "buy" an inventory die, or increase the level of the die. Perhaps something like 5gp (or as appropriate for the economy of your game and table) to buy a d4 Inventory Die. Each additional level adds another 5gp, so that a d6 would be 10gp, d8 costs 15gp, and so forth, to a max of a d12. I'd need to play test something like this before being comfortable with it, but I think the idea of an Inventory Die could be implemented in a number of ways.

Just a minor precision here for "Steal spell" feat: it says "when you use Lengendary thief", which is a 1 min activity, preventing to steal spell while in combat. But you can exhaust spells from a sleeping spellcaster that way, stealing them and wait 4 rounds each time to let the stollen spell been lost, not using it to remain hidden.

Wow. A lot of ideas going through my head. Like: 1) Play with the Free Archetype Rule. Play Rogue. Eldritch Trickster. Choose Wizard for Eldritch Trickster. Pick up the Alchemist Archetype feats with the optional rule. You're the closest thing to Batman (Prep). Insane stealth, thievery, athletics, acrobatics, and investigation. A utility belt of abilities (arcane spells, potions, mutagens, poisons, bombs) that you can customize based on what you're dealing with. High knowledge in a lot of areas (base skills + high intelligence for additional skills). Precision damage on strikes
Predictive Purchase; because how else does Batman know to pack Shark Repellant in his utility belt?

43:11 Tactical Entry lets you trade being hidden for a free action and a chance to use Surprise Strike. You can only use it if you beat your enemies in initiative, so Surprise Strike is guaranteed, and in most cases you are going to blow your cover in the first round anyway.
24:51 there is *kinda* a thrown build, Lost Omens Pathfinder Guide added Fane's Fourberie Where you can fight with playing cards and treat them as knives or darts
You could actually loosen the pommel of a long sword using Sabotage. When the enemy attempt to use it, the blade would fly free from the handle and go off into space. The DM must be mindful in the instance of the use as to what might actually be able to be sabotaged and what not.
@elwayfan01

Was totally expecting an "end the enemy rightly" joke there.
@BobertTheThirdson
Жыл бұрын
Except the feat specifically calls out swords as ineligible. Also a pommel, under normal circumstances, is not a moving part, it is a part for sure, but it is snugly secured and stays immobile during operation. This skill is doing something quick and easy like cutting a bow or crossbow string (or possible just unstringing them) or detaching the chain of a Morningstar, something that could feasibly be done easily in a single action with only a simple hand trick. To remove a pommel typically requires bracing the sword against something, and using a percussive instrument to hammer off the pommel, usually requiring multiple strikes to dislodge it, which would require full control of the weapon, it's not something you could do while it is in an opponent's possession, not without magic, and this feat is not a magical one. You could argue that the opponent may have a poorly maintained sword and the pommel is extremely loose, but that would be highly situational and not something the feat would trigger, because again, it would require magic to make it so every opponent you face somehow has a loose pommel. The sabotage you're talking about is something that would occur before a battle. like sneaking into an enemy camp's armory and sabotaging all the weapons before the battle the next day, this is something any character can do, but it requires full control of the weapons and time to do it. It's not this rogue feat which is going to typically be used mid-battle or possibly shortly before while the enemy is alert and is possession of their weapon, with extreme finesse, not brute force.

Rogues in 2e are absolutely my favorite of any system! They're the ULTIMATE skill monkey!
We commonly refer to the Rogue as "The Alpha Class" at our weekly PFS sessions. But I made a Gnome Tiefling Rogue who is a Scoundrel and Captivator Dedication, she is essentially a low-powered Dandasuka now.
A point about Overextending Feint - you can Feint twice, and take a different effect each time. Unbalancing Blow; some enemies have All-around Vision or Deny Advantage, etc.
There ARE builds for thrown-weapon rogues :D They got a lot of thrown-weapon-love in the APG (so did the fighter and barbarian). Combine it with the Dual-Weapon Warrior archetype and you can go absolutely crazy with thrown weapons! Awesome video as always! 31:00 "Predictable!" is a really good thing from narrative perspective. I really love it!
I think the big reason why Rogues have such a low armor proficiency is to compensate for Nimble Dodge. Since Rogues don't have lots to do with their reaction, this is basically a feat that you can pick to increase your AC to +2. Granted, it's only against a single attack, but still, that's pretty good for 1x1.
I had this video running in the background while I worked and wasn't looking at it during the sabotage situation. At first I really thought sayboteg was a word. Good one!
Hey! My names there! Thanks a bunch for the video!! Been super looking forward to a rogue deep dive! Glad to have it so early!!!
Important to note for the Ruffian, if you want heavy armor you can just take the Sentinel dedication and you immediately gain heavy armor proficiency that scales at the same rate as your medium armor. I play a Ruffian Rogue Orc, front lining with a mace and a shield in full plate armor.
One thing you missed with swift elusion. It's not in the feat itself but synergy. Legendary sneak, you're always sneaking. If you've got invisibility or hidden paragon. Baddy seeks moves rogue from undetected to hidden, success, 2nd action stride up to rogue, reaction stride to a different stay adjacent square. Guess who's undetected again in a different square. Not better than blank slate but amazing.
Been waiting ages for this! thank you
You should make some builds of the classes you cover too. I'd love to see you building a rogue, specialy an Eldritch trickster.

I've only played one once in 10 years, and the campaign ended after 3 sessions! It was a rogue/cleric multiclass too. Was super interesting.
My first ever PF2e character I made is for an upcoming campaign. Eldritch Trickster Rogue, variant Human. I don’t have access to my chacarse sheet atm but I think I choose Witch as the spell casting source too. Basically my character is going to be an NPC from my own 5e Curse of Strahd campaign. The party’s rogue killed their friend in front of them, blamed an enemy, and everyone believed him on a 29 deception roll cause he was around a corner. Then Nimir (my character) got mauled by a fiendish Spirit Guardians but survived- a commoner that made their save against what would have been 7 damage, halved to 3- thus gaining some dark magic. The line from my campaign that’ll always haunt them? After the rogue killed their friend he disappeared. Then he came from around a corner to backstab an enemy, rolling a 25 Intimidation to keep Nimir quiet. After he successfully Sneak Attacked he said, “Good job, screaming is for the weak” before dying himself 2 rounds later. I’m so excited to play Nimir
Man, rogues are a powerhouse of effects and versatility.
Took some donations but we finally got the Rogue!

Starting my second (permanent) Pathfinder character soon. Eno Makovic. Human Ruffian rogue. Rapier in 1 hand, whip in the other… you know, the whip that can trip, disarm, agile and finesse, and has a range of 10 feet allowing him to provide flanking without being in most creature’s attack range. Took a feat to get access to martial weapons just to get access to the whip lol. The party also has a fighter with a 10 foot reach weapon. Imagine- round 1, we both go before the big baddie, I disarm the target and deal a sneak attack from 10 feet back, the fighter trips and does a power attack from 10 feet back. The target has to (1) stand up (2) pick up or draw their weapon (3) if it isn’t, close the distance with one of us or throw out a 1 action spell.
Rogues are definitely crazy. You need to be aware of all your feats at all times to make good use of them. Not easy.

Whoa hooaaa oh sabotage! Things sound never quite the way they seem. 🎶
Fun fact: Rogues aren't martials, they're a skill class. Thought they were built on a different chassis and then the Investigator playtest all but confirmed it but the Ancestor Oracle really confirmed it. That makes Swashbucklers skill-martial hybrids and we're getting caster-martial hybrids (magus and summoner) now we just need a skill-caster hybrid.
@gm9460
3 жыл бұрын
How did the oracle confirm it? Because they gave three options implying three chassis?
@Lechteron
3 жыл бұрын
From the beginning they seemed different. But with the three outcomes for ancestor oracles and the Investigator being built the same way. Together they add enough evidence. Plus once when I mentioned it in the FB group one of the Paizo folk (Michael Sayre if I remember correctly) liked the comment. None of them alone are hard evidence granted but taken together they certainly heavily point in that direction. And then add in how differently the Swashbuckler functions from other martials...
Cheeky Sabotage trolling Quick thing for Mastermind Rogues, I think playing around with Additional Lore (auto leveling lore skills always handy), Assurance and Automatic knowledge could be fun. For me, if you have automatic knowlegde to hit a certain DC and get a round of sneak attack off without help as a free action against things you might kill in a round with that extra (potentially 6+ d6 in a round).... then roll with the loremaster spell two dice to shoot for the crit against something a bit meatier
I never knew I'd appreciate ASMR nonat
A rogue with Watch Your Back would nicely compliment a witch with Evil Eye. I really like feats like Prescient Planner since you don't have to spend time actually shopping basic for items and it opens up more RP avenues. Opportune Backstab plus Leave an Opening would be brutal for anything caught between a rogue and a fighter with Combat Reflexes. Speaking of rogue fighter combo, who's reaction resolves first if a rogue uses Stay Down!? Cloud Step would see more frequent use than Blank Slate; Blank Slate would be really GM dependent. Thematically Implausible Infiltration would go well with the Oozemorph archetype. What surprised me about the rogue is just how much of a team player their feats make them, both in relation to martials and casters.
Five Legendary skills? Try Six, and that's just with default. If you get the Acrobat Archetype, you can make it Seven Legendary skills since Acrobatics automatically scales with it. If you take Additional Lore, that becomes Eight Legendary skills (and one more with each time you take it). Though a better version of Additional Lore is Gnome Obsession, which does the same thing, but also scales your starting Lore, so that would be Nine Legendary skills by the end (though you can't take it multiple times). Rogues and also Investigators make great skill classes (So does Bard, but in a more choice limited way).

I would ordinarily prefer casters, like in 5e, but in 2e, the way that casters handled the 3 action economy, it's hardly any different from 5e. Spells are worth 2 actions, and your 3rd action is basically reserved for 5e style concentration. If I am to play PF 2e, I play it for the flexibility of all the different situational actions you can take, and when you can do 3 per turn rather than 1 per turn, you can take advantage of those extra options.
i needed to listen to the sabotage part 3 times bc i couldn't focus. thank you.
Wasn't bothered either way for class guides but Thank you regardless stream donators!!!
You’re Next has the problem of it being a reaction until level 15 and there quickly becomes better choices Missed that legendary thing though because I don’t usually look that far ahead!
Nimble dodge isn't comparable to reactivate shield. It only works on the attack that triggered it. Reactive shield works for the rest of the turn

That's a fair point. Didn't think of that part.

@@Nonat1s great content as always though!
Starting at 52:20, we get Nonat1s ASMR. Enjoy!
how dose telekanitic projectial do 5d6+(cast mod) at lvl 5? I thought it was a new die every spell level you have (as in lvl 3 spellcaster, that get 3d6+mod) or was that an example with sneak attack?

Yes 2d6 sneak
I would love a con based poison rogue that has a mechanic where they store the poison in there body and using the poisons causes persistence damage to the rogue. Also I wish the rogue had more for two weapon fighting.
Nonat: "Why are they giving support for a Thrown Weapon Rogue? that's weird." Me: THIS MAN HAS NEVER PLAYED MORROWIND AND SHOULD FIX THAT
The bit about tele. Projectile would deal 5d6 as a 5th level spell at 10th character level, right? Heighten spell always confuses me. So, at 11th character level you would be doing 5d6+3d6+4? or whatever your bonus is on a sneak attack. Too bad it is a 2 action spell.
That intro... I can relate (halfling thief with lots of deception) . Anything but nature, religion, survival, or medicine. He is a city mouse and a gambler, and he's quite selfish. He'd rather just buy potions and sleep in a feather bed after a night of carousing.
Can you do a class tier list based off subclass?
note on the "shove down" class feat that "assurance" skill feat on athletics takes away the MAP from the trip
Just out of dumb curiosity... If a player is an Orc Rogue with the Eldritch Trickster racket, is it possible to get Hand of the Apprentice as a Wizard spell? If so, what level does the PC have to be? I like the idea of using TKP for 5d4+5 damage at level 5, but that's from 30 to 60 feet away... I'm a bit more keen towards an Orc Rogue with a Greataxe "swinging" for 1d12+mod+S.A. from 500 ft. :)
Great video! Inspired me to make a Saboteur racket, here's the write up, hope you can take a look: "You gain the Mispronounce action that deals mental damage equal to your sneak attack... ya frickin' troll"

@@Nonat1s God help us all. Also I realized, you'd be so opposed to my champion/rogue knife thrower, and I suppose that's my revenge?
I think who ever wrote this class and all the sub-classes was/is a fan of the TV show "Leverage".
Reactive pursuit Negates Step and abilities similar to the rogues own ability to move half thier speed without AOO's.
Overextending feint is good when you're already flanking. Gives you something to do with feint then
So let's see if I maybe get some ideas for my Half-Orcess Glasha who is an Eldritch Trickster which I for once, have not planned much ahead ^^
I am not understanding how Analyze weakness allows for quadruple sneak attack damage. Does sneak attack damage double on crits? (I thought it didn't)
tbh, I don't really think the Thief needed to have *that* ability, because that Dex-To-Damage thing really messes with the structure of other parts of the system, like, I could feasibly argue that Swashbucklers should get it too, because a Rapier is MUCH less about just shanking your opponent and more about finding the soft meaty tissue that isn't well protective (like the throat), I think Thief would've been better off with some sort of movement ability (like idk, take the Skirmisher ability from 5e to give them the ability to move without provoking opportunity as a reaction when someone enters your range or something, might be a bit powerful in Pathfinder but idk)
Iirc there are general and skill (???) feats that allow you to use cards as thrown weapons and do a lot of interesting things with them. Put this on a rogue and it should be a very fun "gambit" light build.
Thief goblin rogue. I love it
Can you not use swift sneak with tactical entry? Tactical entry says you stride, and swift sneak says you can swift sneak instead of striding.
Does magical trickster work with dual class optional rule?
Regarding shove down, shouldn't the multiple attack penalty be -4 as long as you are doing it with a free hand? Fists are agile weapons after all.

Sadly, it does not work like that, the "weapon" need to have trip trait to gain benefit of agile (like wolf style, and I am not 100% even that works). Free hand is normally required to make the skill check avaible
