Maybe you underestimated the Combine Elixirs feat. Mutagens are considered as Elixirs, so you can Combine a Juggernaut Mutagen with a Mistform Elixir to get two buffs with only 2 actions. That's pretty neat. This saved my Alchemists life a few times.
Using crafting for medicine checks if you are a Chirurgeon is better than it seems. As long as you have trained proficiency in medicine, you can use crafting for medicine's trained and untrained uses. As an alchemist, your intelligence is already high, so you get plenty of skills and there's no major downside to being trained in medicine, and as your crafting proficiency increases, you get better at "medicine" without having to put the skill increases into medicine. As you increase your crafting proficiency, you essentially get to raise your proficiency in both crafting and medicine without having to spend the skill increases for medicine.
When you're talking about Eternal Elixer at the end, mutagens actually are also elixers, so they could be made permanent.
@Ogrimmygrimgrim

@MoosterMeisen

@undrhil

Which is probably why the churgent doesn't get to just make 2 elixirs because then they could pick mutations for the quick alchemy cantrip. However it also means that that beat that allows you to make a elixir bomb can be used to make a mutation bomb. MU TAG EN. Not mutation.
Fun fact: I bought a CRB this year (2023), and it fixed the chirurgeon, allowing you to just straight up use crafting in place of medicine, including for prerequisites, without even requiring any level of medicine proficiency. It also has simplified the 7th, 11th, and 17th level ability for bomber, chirurgeon, and mutagenist, allowing for any formulas of certain levels

True. I forgot about that research field bonus while analyzing that class feature. That definitely makes it a bit stronger!
If I ever get a chance to play a character, Alchemist is my number one choice (makes me think of the FF:Tactics Chemist), I was just drawn to this one first. As for how to pronounce the Chirurgeon, this is my take on it. • Chirp - drop the p, "Chir" • Surgeon - drop the s, "urgeon" • Chir-urgeon
The Improbable Elixirs feat makes the potions elixirs... which means they can be made permanent. This means an alchemist can be permanently under the effects of haste at level 18. That's usually a level 20 ability. They can also be an amazing scout; permanent invisibility (although it does end if you make a hostile action). There are a few other good ones, but there's one more thing I want to point out; since they count as elixirs, the chirurgeon can produce three of these potions per infused reagent. That potion of invisibility? Spend two of your likely twenty-three (at least) reagents to make the entire party invisible for ten minutes, and possibly have a few potions left over (depending on party size). I love how silly Alchemists can get.
@rafaelsiqueira2375
3 жыл бұрын
David Higdon damn it’s hard to say no to haste, invisibility and fly speed. I didn’t even think of the implications of having the elixir trait.
Combine elixers is a great feat. It allows alchemists to have the combined effects of multiple polymorph elixers; gaining both the benefits as well as the drawbacks.
@23:30 the champion can infinite heal every 10 minutes at first level. It's to the point in my game that I just ask my champion how much time she needs to heal everyone and consider what's changed in the dungeon as a result of that delay. No checks needed though, and they always wake up at max HP
Sonic damage is done by _1 cantrip_ to my knowledge. Haunting Hymn is an AOE, 15 foot cone, sonic damage, 2 action cantrip.
When I had a player who wanted to be q Chiurgeon, I went with this: "As long as your proficiency rank in Medicine is trained or better, you can use your proficiency ranks in Crafting as if they were proficiency ranks in Medicine for any Medicine skill checks."
@chaddixon9764

I am genuinely confused as to how it can be interpreted any other way. Because it says you can use Crafting for ANY Medicine check.
@seanmurphy3430
Жыл бұрын
@@chaddixon9764 Technically, the wording is that you can use Crafting "for any of Medicine's trained or untrained uses." Which I'd interpret as meaning that if you have Expert proficiency or better in Crafting, you can use that bonus for Medicine checks; you just can't use it for Medicine checks that require you to be expert or better (e.g. most of the Medicine feats besides Battle Medicine.)
@kevinbarnard355
Жыл бұрын
@@chaddixon9764 It's better than that. Chirurgen was updated in an errata. It now allows you to completely substitute Crafting for anything Medicine related. Your proficiency rank in craft counts as proficiency in medicine for feat prerequisites or Treat Wounds "heightened" effects, and use craft for medicine skill checks. The only thing that wouldn't help you is items/feats that give you a bonus to medicine checks. You'd instead want items/feats that give bonuses to crafting checks since that's the mod you roll for your medicine skill actions like Treat Wounds.
The big thing about additives is that the *modified* item level can be no higher than your advanced alchemy level. So if you're level 11 and just learned the recipe for Greater Acid Flasks, you wouldn't be able to apply any additives to that. In particular, if you want to add an "additive 2" to that same Greater Acid Flask, you'd need to be at least 13th level to do so.
@Nonat1s
3 жыл бұрын
I believe that's why the requirement is that the item being added to must be that many levels below your advanced alchemy level, so that makes sense.
Hurray for Alchemist!
Thank you so much for making this series! You've made these sooo much easier to understand, Alchemist was so confusing to me for some reason and the amount of things you can do in general overwhelmed me and my new players. Pathfinder 2e is still so new so there's not a lot of resources and It's my first time dming in a decade and now I can send them these in depth guide where they will get a better understanding of their class than trying to go through the pretty confusing book by constant page flipping. I fully intend to watch the rest of these.
I'm in my first ever campaign as an alchemist and I want to thank you. This gave me so many ideas and was very through in the explanation.
Important note for @49:00 about Improbable Elixers: yes it lets you gain the formulas for potions, but you are still crafting them with Alchemy and they are classed as Elixirs, and do not count as Magical, unlike the actually potion. And since they’re alchemical elixirs, you CAN make those effects combined with Combine Elixirs, and make them indefinite with Eternal Elixirs
Another excellent presentation of a PF 2e class! Thanks for pointing out how the Alchemist shines, because many people don´t get it. Now waiting for Witch and Swashbuckler ;)

I absolutely love that you loved this one, sir.
I know this is a old video but since I've been researching a bit into chirurgeon I figured I'd comment. The treat wounds activity is a trained use of the medicine skill. It then says if you are expert you may at a higher DC roll medicine for higher heals. Where this is spicy is the activity is still a trained use at those higher DCs! Therefore you can scale fully with Crafting off of your field discovery and even do things like battle medicine with a crafting check as it's a trained use as well. Also in a game where a lot of people are getting poisoned or there's a plague in the city a chirurgeon is absolutely insane with perpetual infusion as they can effectively give a whole city a bonus to saves vs poison or disease at no cost. Love the video! And what you said was my initial understanding as well. I think PF2E is full of little things that seem weak on the outside but are actually insane in game. I absolutely adore PF2E and can't wait to play more. TLDR; Leave Chirurgeon alone!!!! Leave it alooooooone!!!!!!
As a new player, this was very helpful!
Helpful, thanks!!
@9:10 Trained and untrained uses is a reference to the skill, not proficiency. Treat Wounds is a Trained Action, for example. There are no Expert Actions, etc.
Now I want to play Pathfinder 2e... darn you and your Alchemist videos! Lol
I'm aware the video is 2 years old, but anyone coming to watch this should be aware of a few things. 1st, Chirurgen's basic research field benefit is much improved. 2nd, Field Discovery at 5th level isn't about making your infused reagents more efficient. It's true power is now you can make any 3 different items of your specialty for 1 infused reagent, instead of 2 of the same formula. Bombers can now make 1 Alchemist's fire, 1 Tanglefoot bad, and one ghost charge for that 1 reagent, as an example, or any combo of up to 3 of the same recipe.
I think the great part about combining poisons is youd be able to introduce normally hard to activate toxins. Such as those with the ingested properties only.
I just created my first Alchemist, and because I felt Bomber was a bit too crude for the intellectual my alchemist was, I really wanted to make him either a general alchemist (there's no such thing unfortunately) or a Chirurgeon. But the options for a Chirugeon are just too limited. Maybe if as signature items they could pick any elixir. That would be good without making them excessive, I think. But as it is, I just ended up going with a bomber.
My brain is very small and tired right now, so expect me to come back and watch this again. But I dig this, and expect that it will be super-helpful when I need to level up. Alchemist is such a weird class, man.

Remember perfect mutagen removes all negatives so the mutant that has 2 effects at the same time could be pretty useful I think one gives -2 on will saves and one gives weakness 5 to all but 1 element quicksilver makes you take twice your level and can't be healed while it last so some major drawbacks
@rafaelsiqueira2375
3 жыл бұрын
Storm Harrell yeah, QuickSilver mutagen makes you take 40 damage at 20th level, essentially makes you have the HP of a spell caster. Perfect mutagen is great for any ranged alchemist as quicksilver is the only mutagen with a drawback that scales with level.
I appreciate the deep dive in Alchemist.
Did you miss that Expanded Splash also increases your splash damage? Now instead of either your Int mod or the bomb's natural splash, you can add the two together!
Feral Mutagen does not lower the AC to -1 from -2. It gives you the option of raising the penalty to -2 for the damage dice size increase.
Summoner and Alchemist are my upcoming favorite classes based on the PF2 vidz I watched. When I start playing definitely starting w/ them. But only w/ the Alchemist do I have a character concept. Mutagenist wielding 2 Dog-Slicer's 1 steel the other silvered (if that's allowed), with a hand-crossbow and rides a boar named "Roast." I know it sounds unique 😉.
It is actually Kī, as in K-eye, for Chirurgeon. Lol. I personally just pronounce it like Surgeon, but us the Su sound from the word sure. But it is amusing to listen to you say it. Amusing, and equally triggering. Lol
Going into this vid, I picked up from the community that alchemist in general requires a high degree of system mastery in order to play effectively. After watching, I think that assessment is true. There are just so many different mechanical plates to keep spinning, and that's without diving into the wide variety of alchemical items in the game. Probably not the first one I'd encourage making for a group just starting out, but once we've gotten a few games under out belt, bombs away!

Keep it up!
Pretty sure you read the Chrrgin entry wrong. My interpretation is you *can* use Crafting checks at expert skill level or higher, in place of Medicine checks. The reason they specified untrained and trained is because the actions and activities associated with Medicine can be either untrained or trained actions. As far as I know no skill has an expert requirement for an activity.
@christophandre

Exactly. Also, I think they wanted to avoid misunderstandings and wanted to make clear, that the crafting proficiency can't be used to meet medicine prerequisite for any skill feats, like i. e. Versatile Performance for Bards would do. I would say that Chirurgen in combination with Field Medic can be an interesting combination. The ability boost from this background might not be the best, but you get trained in medicine and the Battle Medicine skill, which makes an alchemist more versatile as healing supporter in encounters.
It says in the Demolition Expert: Fire in the Hole, that since you did not throw the bombs there is no splash damage or similar effects.
Expanded splash does not just increase splash radius. While calculated splash gives you splash equal int-modifier, expanded splash now adds your int-modifier onto regular splash damage.

great video
As much as I love alchemists, I think Bombers are *too* reliant on Quick Alchemy. "Yeah, you can do all this cool stuff! ... But only if you inefficiently blow through your resources or rely on weak low-level items." Alchemists also need another boost to their weapon proficiencies.
A few comments/mistakes I noted: 1) Alchemists can only reach expert proficiency for their attacks, and that's at 7th level. Martials can all get expert at 5th level, and they can reach master at 13th level, while casters can use cantrips that scale continuously in terms of damage, and can go up to legendary for their accuracy. Alchemical items get inherent bonuses to compensate somewhat for that, but once you factor in all the bonuses for items and ability scores, alchemists will still lag behind everyone else by 2-4 points. The only type that can keep up are the feral alchemists. 2) Efficient Alchemy: You still have to spend the money for the extra items. You just save on time. 3) Demolition Charge: The primary (hit) damage is only inflicted on the object the hazard is rigged to. Creatures only ever take the splash damage. 4) Calculated Splash: This represents only a bonus 1-2 points of splash damage in most situations. Considering alchemists won't hit as often as other characters (see point 1), that's an underwhelming consolation prize IMO. On the bright side, the APG added really useful items that should be mainstays for many alchemists, including crystal shards (bomb that starts at 4 splash damage and creates an area of caltrops), dread ampoules (bomb that does mental damage and inflicts frightened) and ghost charges (bomb that does positive damage; in effect, supercharged holy water). I know you couldn't go over the items, but I would have liked at least a mention and basic descriptions of the five categories of items alchemists can make: bombs (ranged energy damage), elixirs (long duration special abilities), mutagens (short duration skill boosts), poisons (extra damage and conditions), and tools (utility). In particular, the benefit of mutagens in campaigns where skill challenges are frequent (such as Pathfinder Society scenarios) should not be overlooked.

Important note for Demolition Charge @26:30 this ability is not compatible with QA for infinite demo charges, can only be used with you Advanced Alchemy bombs or ones Crafted in Downtime. Sorry Bombers, you don’t get to be a 1-Bomber wrecking crew. 😢
Essay ahead: I have yet to play pf2e, but I enjoy picking apart rpg systems. Let me know if this is at all accurate: alchemists function a lot like a wizard, but they have reagents instead of spell slots. They can spontaneous cast for 1 slot, prepared cast for 1/2 slot, and prepare thier specailties for 1/3. They can give their "spells" to other people to cast on their turns, increasing flexibility. They have slightly better proficiencies than a wizard, but no cantrips or focus spells. They also generally need to keep at least 1 hand open to "cast" thier items. How do items compare to spells? I don't have enough system knowledge to be sure and there are probabaly outlier items and spells that make everything muddier, but eyeballing it it seems to me that, when applied appropriately, an alchemical item is usually worth as much as the second-best spellslot available to a wizard of the same level. So a level 5 item looks about as good as a level 2 spell, a level 7 about as good as a level 3 spell, a level 1 about as good as a cantrip... except for bombs, which are usually worth half as much but are the easiest items to prep in advance, and with quick bomber just about even out again. Unlike a wizard, all items you make always cost the same level of "slot" regardless of item level. Which means a max level alchemist could be considered to have a similar number of "slots" as a wizard, but they are all level 8 or 9 slots, with a discount on specialties and prepped utility "spells..." but any time you make a lower level item than your maximum, it's akin to using a higher level slot than necessary to get a specific lower level effect you might still need. Its not likely you'll always be able to leverage every reagent for maximum level items, but potentially most of them. Is this a reasonable comparison? Are there statistical differences in hit chances, spell/item power, or relevant abilities that change this? Because if this is even close to right, then a level 1 alchemist looks underpowered but bombers at least seem really good mid and late game.
Alchemical Familiar is silly on the Pathbuilder2e App. It does not count Alchemical Familiar as qualifying you to take the familiar feat tree, but if you take Familiar Master Dedication, you suddenly get to make your alchemical familiar an enhanced familiar. Which is weird.
Just getting into pathfinder 2e and I can't find any info on the anathema for alchemists. Do they not have any
Kinda late to the party. But could someone help me figure out the toxicologists action economy? I have to spend 1 action to draw my poison, 1 action to apply and since I’m ranged and only have access to the blowgun and crossbow 1 action to load, then a fourth and final action to actually attack. Which obviously doesn’t add up. The DM couldn’t figure out how to make it work either, so we agreed I can pre-poison my darts, so that I can at least attack every round (unless I have to reposition or anything else) and he has allowed me to have another character teach me to use a bow, to actually have options in combat.
Ratpeople Alchemist is quite literally Skaven Warp Engineers and I am here for it!
Me, new to Pathfinder: "Ooh, I'd love to play an alchemist. A cute girl with a passion for helping others and bombing problems, she would make elixirs and-" Me, looking up how to play alchemist: "Yeah maybe I can settle for Witch"
So @09:20 small correction: you can use Crafting for ALL medicine checks (as long as medicine is trained). So if I wanted to make an expert or higher medicine check to Treat Wounds, I can use Crafting to do it. But this does not count for Medicine based feats, which means you still need to increase Medicine for feats, if you decide to go that route.
Does double brew let you make 2 "cantrip" bombs for 1 action?
21:10 if you get a bandolier you don't need it and if you crafted it with quick alchemy it's already in your hand to throw
I chill here for 3 days in this inn. The first 2 mornings I will prep only life elexier and drink them to regain full health. On day 3 I prep my usual stuff. Is that ok GM?
I'm not sure if I understand it correctly: Expanded Splash also says that you can add your Intelligence modifier to the usual splash damage (in addition to increasing the radius). Since Calculated Splash is a prerequisite, does that mean that any bomb splash essentially becomes 2 * int mod? It seems that even the strongest major bombs have 4 splash at most, these 2 feats would make any bomb (even a cantrip one) go up to 8+. Also, the damage from Sticky Bomb might ramp up quite a bit (even though on just on the direct target).
Magnifique
Error @ 8:45: If you are Trained in Medicine, but Expert in crafting, you use your Expert crafting check for all Medicine skills. You only ever need to buy that first "rank" in medicine.
How can I find a group to play 2e?
I have a question about something like Directional Bombs feat. When it says you CAN make a cone, does it mean that you can choose between both of them on a case per case basis, or does it replace the splash with a cone in every case?
@dragonhearthx8369

When it comes to dnd, the word "can" means you have the option too. Monk: you can use dexterity instead of strength for your unarmed strikes. Meaning you could use either or. I think the same applies here.
What book is this from?? Can’t seem to find it anywhere.
So as I understand Demolition Charge, as I understand it the creature that triggers the demolition only gets hit by the splash damage not the bomb damage as the bomb damage is targeting whatever the bombs are attached to. Unless I am misunderstanding the feat.
In FFXIV the voice actors pronounce chirurgeon was pronounced a hard C. So it sounds like kire-urgeon. Interestingly chirurgeon is very similar to the french word for surgeon.

I have to say that when he says "Healing Potions" in reference to Quick Alchemy and Efficient Alchemy, it's not actually healing potions but Elixirs of Life I'm assuming he's referring to, since Healing Potions are magical items, not alchemical, and cannot be crafted by an alchemist using these features.
Hey man, one question.. it's about Potions though, I couldn't find a good source for crafting potions anywhere, and I don't know.. even potions being stronger, I couldn't find a solid way to craft them like "alchemical whatevers". Witch can create potions at level 1 but.. it's just so meeh. Am I mistaken?

Linc R. You must have the Magical Crafting feat, and other than that it follows the normal rules for crafting if I’m not mistaken. There’s a couple of videos on the channel Basic4gamers that explains in detail the crafting system.

You nailed it. And yeah, Basics4gamers is a fantastic resource for concise, obscure rulings like that.
Wait a sec, if Combine Elixir let's you treat 2 elixirs as one, could you not kind of stack them? Like Combo Elixir then 2x the new Elixir? Or if not, the inverse: double crafting elixirs then combining them?
So correction to elixer of life lesser, you stated you gain access to it at lvl 3, you do not gain access to it until lvl 5.

The original errata also stated level 3, because Paizo are not once, not twice, but thrice incompetent when it comes to writing the Alchemist.
Can we get a overview of items next?
