Hi - love your channel - I have a Martin Imperial cornet serial number 704159 - from my readings (not much online about this) it seems that it was produced in 1964 the last year that martin produced the Martin Imperial. Looks very similar to your horn except it has a nickel silver receiver and nickel silver brace. The case is also different - has the Martin symbol but is dark in color. I picked it up very inexpensively because the brace side that attaches the the receiver has come loose. In your experience would I need to do a hard solder fix to that brace and receiver - or can I get away with a soft solder which I am easily capable of doing. The instrument is otherwise in super condition and plays very much like my Yamaha 2330 II (made in china) - I will decide which to keep after fixing the Martin. It is a very nice instrument. Thanks for your help

Hi William, thanks for checking out the channel! What you have there as you have quite rightly identified is a RMC or Wurlitzer version of the Imperial. They are indeed similar. Brace repairs are kind of tricky. If you can take it to a repair shop and have it done. A single solder shouldn't cost you very much as it's a quick job. Doing it yourself you can easily burn the lacquer using too much heat. (I have done this many times myself before I spend a few hours learning how to do it right). The key is minimal tension on the brace when they are put together. If you are set on doing it yourself please consider using the proper solder - not the solder you use for electrical etc. (it would be a lower temp soft I believe)

@@thebrasscellar Thank you for your quick reply and advice - is the RMC version (Wurlitzer) a less capable (valuable ) Martin Imperial with lower quality components ? Looks identical to the one you are showing except for the receiver brace. Thank you for your help.

Hi William, I can't come out at speak for everyone as to whether it's a less capable instrument. If it works and is able to express what you are going for musically that's a win in my book. I personally find the earlier versions to play better for me. The very early models seem to have bells that were left over from the 40's and play very well. Side by side the bell material to me is better on the earlier ones. (I have a couple with me I can compare with). Thanks again for the quesiton.
