Martin Handcraft Committee vs. Martin Deluxe Committee - Which is the one??

BC Misc - Committee vs. Committee
It's a battle to see which is the smoother and silkier than the other!
Check it out and let me know which you think should be the regular instrument.
The two challengers are:
1. Martin Deluxe Committee from 1947
2. Martin Handcraft Committee
Both are instruments that I have regularly played/play
Note:
New setup for Audio mic and Instrument mic - both are raw going into a Zoom H4n recorder.

If you want smooth and silky then the Deluxe wins! The Handcraft sounded a bit brighter to me. Just found your channel, great stuff thanks!

Hum, both are jewels. I believe I prefer the Deluxe over the Handcraft. The tone is a little better!

They do sound differently and I think you sound better on the Martin Committee Deluxe than on the Handcraft. The Deluxe seems to have more core and sounds a little darker. The Handcraft sounds a little bit more airy. It also sounds as if the slotting is better on the Deluxe which makes it easier for you to hit the notes in the center. I'd go for the Deluxe

@@thebrasscellar O.K. I spent a silly amount of time, but only because I shook my head at the other comments, and asked myself if I had missed something. Then I went back for a 2nd look. AND. I agree with myself! the Handcraft is the truer of the two, to that smokey, wistful Jazz-club sound! I'm Canadian, but I have travelled to "the "Blue Note"in New York City, and the Village v Vanguard, seeking that Sound! And your "Handcraft"has it! you missed the centre on a couple of notes, so maybe it doesn't slot quite as well! But then, Miles didn't get too hung-up on slotting! That puppy would kill "Concerto dÁranjuez!" Salutations from the NORTH

Love your channel. Anyways, for me, it's the Hand Craft Committee. They both sound great, but I prefer the tone of the forementioned. On a different subject, what do you know about The Martin Hand Craft Symphony?

Thanks for the support. I've owned several Handcraft Symphony models and still have a large bore in my personal collection along with an even earlier large bore which pre dates those by about 10 years. What information do you require? Rgds, Shawn

@@thebrasscellar Hello Shawn, and thank you for getting back to me. So I have been playing on a Getzen 700 model and have been looking to upgrade to maybe an Eterna Model 900, but I have also been thinking about playing a vintage horn from way back in the day. I have been told Martin Horns are amongst some of the best, and I always hear about Martin Committee's and such. Anyways, I am considering buying a Marin Symphony Hand Craft, but I can't seem to find anyone on youtube that has played one for a demo and such. I'm very curious about the sound. Also, since you are a professional, how do you rate this horn for sound? Thank you for your time most sincerely Raymond Barrientos

One last question, what would you consider a fair price for this Trumpet, which appears to be in excellent condition?

@@raymondbarrientos6602 Hi Raymond, I'd be really careful about getting into a horn of that era - you're taking now close to 100 years old for a lot of them which means work required. Valve rebuilds have increased in price almost double from a few years ago. The Large Bores are quite nice (expect to pay $900 - $1500 as a rough estimate at the moment. They used to be a lot more) - Medium bores can be picked up for a lot less (as in Under US$600). You can find better options in the range. From all the horns I've played I personally prefer the Martin Deluxe Committee - but that's a very personal choice. Be sure to test out a lot of horns if possible and find the one that 'fits' you and you enjoy playing. That above all else should trump your decision in a purchase. (BTW - I'm not a professional - just a very serious amateur player and student of the instrument :-) )

The Deluxe sounds smokier and the Handcraft also sounds a bit brighter to me. I do like the Deluxe sound better I play a Deluxe Committee as my main horn particularly for solos, so could be biased. I had wondered about the comparison and have never played a Handcraft so thanks for posting. Would the Handcraft be better for lead? On another note, have you ever done a comparison with a Martin Troubadour? I have one (brass finish not silver) that I also love to play and would like to hear comments. It is an under-rated/ undiscovered Martin horn in my opinion.. Thanks !

Hi John, thanks for the comment. I think the Handcraft is definitely the horn with a wider tonal palette and would likely suit the lead role between the two (I think there might be better options to cut across the band - it depends on your setup........actually that makes for a great video idea.......I'm gonna write that down now!) I don't currently have a Troubadour - I sold the 2-3 that I had. If you check the video kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqigtpKMXc-XhLg.html this shows a Dansant with what is essentially a Troubadour Bell and a small bore. I can side by side those as another video idea.

The handcraft committee sounds smoother, more filtration of at higher sounds with more charity.

Prefer the deluxe for the type of music you were playing. The handcraft would probably be better for section playing or other styles of music.
