This video from Sears PartsDirect shows you what to do if your range is displaying error code F10, which means that the electronic control board detected a runaway temperature. It's possible that your range is not heating to the temperature that you set it to, or that the control board may be reading the temperature incorrectly. You may need to replace the electronic control board or the temperature sensor.
Visit us at: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
Causes of the F10 error code
F10 is a common error code for several oven brands that appears when the oven exceeds the temperature you set, in either the cook cycle or the clean cycle.
A few things can cause the error code. If the range is actually overheating, then relay on the control board could be stuck, in which case you have to replace the control board.
A defective temperature sensor can also cause this problem. The oven control board may think that the oven is hotter than it actually is, which is why you may see this code when the oven is off and at room temperature.
Most codes clear when you disconnect the power to the range for 1 to 2 minutes. Now that we’ve cleared the code let’s talk about how to keep it from popping up again. Before we fix it, we need to figure out what caused it. To figure out what’s wrong we’ll use a multimeter to check resistance.
1. Check the temperature sensor
Let's check the oven temperature sensor first.
Disconnect the power to the oven. Always disconnect power before checking continuity. Remove the back panel.
Disconnect the wire harness from the sensor. Set your multimeter to read ohms and put one meter lead on each wire terminal of the temperature sensor.
The resistance reading on the sensor should be close to 1,100 ohms at a room temperature of 75 degrees. If the meter shows a resistance of less than 1,000 ohms, more than 1300 ohms or OL at room temperature, replace the sensor, following the instructions in these videos:
Gas range www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
Electric range www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
2. Test the sensor wire harness
If the temperature sensor checks okay, remove the top, back panel, plug the harness back in to the sensor and unplug the other end from the control board. Check resistance though the sensor and the wire harness.
It should read close to the same resistance through the harness and sensor that it read though just the sensor.
3. Replace the control board
If the readings are the same and you continue to get the F10 error code when trying to cook, replace the electronic control board

If the wiring checks good then always replace the sensor first, even if it checks good at room temperature. They go out of tolerance when the oven is hot during cooking. They are cheap enough. It would be a lot cheaper than replacing the board only to find the problem really was a bad sensor. The sensor connector plug pins also can cause problems so I suggest you cut the plugs off and directly hard wire the sensor with high temp , porcelain wire nuts. The plugs I'm referring to are the ones he disconnects at 1:06 If this fails to solve the issue, then before replacing the board , re-solder the pins on the board for the plug he removes at 1:49 . If you don't know how to solder then take the board to a TV repair shop and have them check the board for cracked or burned cold solder joints. Soldering the pins may be the only alternative available to you if the board is no longer available (as is often the case )

So it looks like my sensor gives no reading. I assume its not likely that the sensor AND the control board have gone at the same time. Is there a way to test the control board before I buy a new sensor? I see the sensor isn't a very expensive part but ordering in the part will take time and my family not seeing me fix it instantly is causing them to think I'm in over my head (even though I've handled much harder projects than this).

Im having a similar issue as Dave Leboeuf. At the probe sensor, 1:15 in your video, im reading almost 1100 ohms. But at the 1:55 check, i dont read anything. Is that the wire harness or the probe itself?

  • @searspartsdirect

    @searspartsdirect

Your symptoms point to a failed wire harness since you measured the expected resistance at the probe sensor. Make sure that you plugged the sensor back into the wire harness plug securely before measuring the resistance through the wire harness from the control board. The location of a sensor wire harness failure is often at the plug on the sensor end of the harness. You can fix that type of wire harness plug failure by cutting off the plugs and directly wiring each of the sensor wires to the corresponding harness wires.

@@ianbailey3131 Let us know the model number of your range and we'll try to help. Here's some general advice that may work even though we don't know your range model number: Your symptoms seem to indicate that the broil relay is sticking shut--causing the broil element to stay on and overheat the oven if we understand your description correctly. If you replaced the bake relay on the control board and you're confident that you can safely replace the broil relay, then you may be able fix the problem by replacing the broil relay. If you replace the broil relay and that doesn't fix the problem then you'll likely need to replace the electronic oven control board. Unplug the range to disconnect electrical power before accessing and replacing internal components.

You’ll need to leave the range unplugged or the circuit breaker for the range shut off if the beeping resumes as soon as you restore power. Once you find and fix the problem that’s causing the F10 code, the range won’t beep.

The temperature sensor or the sensor wiring harness could be defective. A short in the sensor wire harness to the metal cabinet of the range can cause the F10 code. Unplug the range and check for resistance between the wire harness and the metal cabinet of the range as shown in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGp4yat6j8zRgbQ.html If you measure 0 resistance or any resistance value during this test, then the wire harness is shorting to the metal cabinet and likely causing the F10 code. Repair or replace the wire harness. If you measure infinite resistance during this test, then the wire harness is likely okay. If the harness is okay, then you’ll likely need to replace the oven temperature sensor because the sensor measures normal resistance at room temperature but is not detecting oven temperature accurately when it heats up.

Thanks for the video. My range is a Kenmore model #970-6876. My problem is pretty much what Ian describes -- oven never stops preheating until things start to burn and the F10 error alarm goes off. Would this also be the broil relay? Resistance measured at the probe is as it should be (1.072). Resistance measured through the harness and probe together is higher (1.998), if that tells you anything.

@@doncockburn6918 Melted wires can be caused by a stuck relay on the control board. A wiring short or an oven element that is broken and shorting to metal (or other wiring) can also cause the melted wire that you're describing. We recommend that you have a service technician examine and repair the range because a short circuit is dangerous-especially if it's not found and repaired correctly. If you're completely confident that you can repair the range yourself, check the bake and broil elements for breaks or shorts to metal inside the oven. Because the yellow wire melted, you'll likely see burn marks if an element broke and shorted to metal in the oven. Also check all wires going to the bake and broil elements for damage and shorts. If you find no shorts or damage to oven elements or wiring, then replacing the electronic oven control board will likely fix this problem. If the yellow wire is damaged, you'll likely need to replace the wire or the wire connector. The model number for your range indicates that it's a Canadian model. The part number for the electronic control board is 316462808. That part is available in the United States. The oven likely wasn’t overheating since it was off for 5-7 minutes. You should have a service technician check the range to be safe. If you’re confident that you can safely fix the oven yourself, check the resistance of the oven temperature sensor as shown in the video and replace the sensor if you don’t measure the expected resistance. If the sensor is okay, check resistance through the sensor and wire harness as shown in the video and repair or replace the wire harness if it has failed. I have a Kenmore double oven 790.47733407 that occasionally shows an F10 for the lower oven when I lower the oven temperature, for instance, from 220 deg F to 170. It then ran away to a measured (separate thermometer) temperature of 500 deg F. Is there a way to retrieve stored codes for this oven? For some ranges, pressing "cancel (times 3) and then start" yields a more detailed error code that triggers a test mode. A more detailed code then indicates a sensor temperature or a control board failure. Can I do that to track my problem down to root cause? Is my model one that is at risk for a power element to ground failure? It may be that my failure is from an intermittent temperature sensor; I'd like to catch it in the act. Panel inputs include (oven)Light, bake, broil, cook time, warm & hold, stop/clear, delay start, clock, timer set/on, add 1 minute, ^(up), down, for two ovens. Thank you!

An update - The oven temperature ran away again. The temperature as measured was 250 deg F, the setpoint was 180. This time I noted that the upper element was red hot, but there was no control panel indication that it was on. Moments before, it was cycling the elements normally, and the indications on the control panel showed the top and bottom elements turning on and off. Then the cycling, and the clicking of the relays, and the control panel indication of an element on, ceased; but the upper element was red hot.

@@richstevensproductdevelopm2086 There's no way to retrieve stored error codes for that oven. The problem that you're describing in the lower oven could be caused by a stuck relay on the relay control board, a loose wiring connection or a bad temperature sensor. The problem with the upper over that you're describing may be caused by a bad temperature sensor. The F10 error code is generated when the control in the console senses a high temperature measured by the temperature sensor. If the temperature sensor is sending high temperature properly in the lower oven, then the relay control board or the console control board may be at fault. Because this oven has 2 control boards, I recommend that you have a service technician diagnose and repair the problems that you're describing.

I am curious as to why it would fail. Could the broiler element have drawn too much current? The wiring harness and connections are intact and there was no grounding of the element. Is there a resistance test for the element - if so, what is a typical resistance value? The temperature sensor tested correctly at 500 deg for 15 minutes F and at 60 deg F. This didn't cause the problem, but I did note that the unit was misassembled - heating element power wiring was run directly over a sharp edge on the top of the cabinet, trapped between a vertical rib and the top cover. A shorted temperature sensor wire harness can cause the F10 code even though you measured 1,100 ohms of resistance through the harness and the sensor. To check for a shorted wire harness, unplug the range and disconnect the sensor wire harness from the electronic oven control board. Set your multimeter to measure resistance. Place one meter probe on one of the sensor wires in the sensor wire harness plug and touch the other meter probe to bare metal on the range’s cabinet. You should measure infinite resistance during that test. If the meter detects resistance, then damaged wire insulation is allowing that wire to short against metal inside the range cabinet. Find and repair the wire damage. Repeat the test for the other wire in the sensor harness. Repair that wire if you measure resistance indicating that wire is also shorting to metal inside the range cabinet. If you measure infinite resistance through both sensor wires, then you’ll likely need to replace the electronic oven control board. We’re not aware of other issues that cause the F10 on the type of range shown in the video. If you have a different type of range than the one shown in the video, post the model number of your range and we’ll look for any other possible causes of the F10 code.

The AF code on a Maytag dryer typically indicates that the control detects an exhaust air-flow problem. Check the lint screen first. Clear lint from the lint screen and see if the code clears. If not, then you may need to clean the lint screen with water and a soft-bristle brush to remove fabric softener residue that can build up and clog the screen. You may also need to check the flexible vent behind that dryer. Make sure that flexible vent isn’t kinked and clear any debris that you find inside the vent. Clean the exhaust vent that carries exhaust air to the outside of your home. Make sure the damper on exhaust hood on the outside of your home opens properly and isn’t clogged. If the oven temperature sensor resistance is okay and you don’t have a broken bake or broil element causing the overheating, then you likely need to replace the control board. We hope this general information helps you repair the range. As noted above, post the model number of your range if you need more assistance.

the model is pglef385ec6. i Did notice that the bake element only seemed to be heating on half of it. the left side was heating but the right side didnt seem to be. I have used the oven since and the pf10 code did not come back on but the oven was still overheating.

Based on your symptoms, you’ll need to replace that bake element since only half of it heats. Here’s a link for the replacement bake element: www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/318254906/0022/628.html You may also need to replace the electronic oven control board - especially if the oven continues to overheat after replacing the bake element. The broken bake element could have damaged the electronic oven control board - causing the overheating. Here’s a link for the electronic oven control board: www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/316418760/0022/628.html Don’t forget to unplug the range before replacing parts.

The oven temperature sensor or it’s wiring harness could be faulty. Check that sensor using a multimeter as shown at :57 in the video. Replace the oven temperature sensor if your multimeter doesn’t measure the correct resistance through the sensor. If the temperature sensor is okay, check the sensor wiring harness as shown in the video. Repair or replace the wiring harness if it’s damaged. If the oven temperature sensor and its harness are both okay, then you’ll likely need to replace the electronic oven control board. We hope this information helps. If you need more assistance, let us know the model number of your range and give us more details about the problem and the results of troubleshooting test that you conducted.

Do yourself a favor. If you start getting the F10 error, replace both the control board and temp sensor. If one goes out the other is probably not far behind.

Alright I'm about ready to give up and throw away this pos Frigidaire. I replaced the temp probe, still did it. So I replaced the control board. Fixed... For about 3 days then today it started doing it again. Unplugged it, let it cool down, after about 10 second's does it again. $100 into this stupid oven and nothing is fixed! Anyone have any advice that might fix it? Other than just giving up and buying a new range?

A bad oven temperature sensor wire harness can cause the F10 code. Unplug the range and check the temperature sensor wire harness as shown at 1:43 in the video. If you don’t measure the right temperature sensor resistance through the sensor wires that connect to the control board, then you’ll need to repair the wire harness. The most vulnerable spot in the wire harness is the plastic plug at the sensor end of the purple wire harness. It may not be connecting the sensor wires to the purple wire harness securely. You may need to cut off both sides of the plastic wire harness clip and connect one sensor wire to one violet wire and the other sensor wire to the other violet wire using ceramic wire nuts. If you measure proper resistance through the sensor wire harness that connects to the control board, check each purple wire for a short to the metal frame of the range cabinet. Here’s a video that shows how to check for a short to the metal frame at 1:35 in the video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-test-continuity-on-wire-and-electrical-parts-video.html. If you detect resistance from either wire to the range’s metal frame, find and repair the damaged or pinched wire that is touching the metal frame.

I've replaced the control board once already on this oven... My guess is, a second replacement is necessary... Perhaps a replacement with the entire unit this time.
