I'm actually relieved to hear that the garden seems off this year. All of my tomatoes are still green, and I usually start harvesting in early August here. Cucumbers, squash, and beans have all been growing wonderfully though.

Have you guys ever made fried green tomatoes (yes, like the movie)? Being from Alabama, USA, it is a favorite. I encourage you to make them with a bit of corn relish and horseradish.

Yes my garden is soooo slow this year especially tomatoes! However, my Swiss chard and carrots beets are going like crazy! Weird year for sure!

Yes! All of my hydrangeas did not bloom at all this year, just green leaves. My whole neighborhood was dealing with the same issue. Very odd🤔

@@beautifulhope861 Hopefully next year will be better. Most of the things I planted in the back yard were slow, but finally successful. I did get some really good squash and the zinniahs did really well in September and late August. My sunflowers finally opened while we were out of town for my birthday, but everything froze and died last week, except for the sunflowers, which are still struggling to stay open.

Kpin my fingers crossed. Take me back to Ireland. I cannot forget my magical experience! 🥰

We had a very cold July here in eastern Canada but now we're at almost 15 days over the last 20 where it's between 35-43 Celsius (!!). I hate how excruciating hot it is, but my tomatoes went from itsy bitsy and almost white from the lack of warmth, to ripe in less than 3 weeks. Never seen them growing this fast, and now I literally have more than I can chew!

I love seeing your garden, shed and poly tunnel! There’s such a feeling of privacy and sanctuary around your home 💗 Reading down the comments it seems like everyone has a reduced or different harvest than they expected this year - so interesting. Sending love to you and Terry for your break in September; you will be missed but I hope you feel renewed and refreshed 🤗

Having felt overwhelmed with the vivid nightmare ongoing here at home and the effects on my family, I tuned in for a visit and immediately felt relaxed and able again. Thanks 😇

Here in California, it’s been too hot for many of my vegetables to grow. Or the little critters have eaten them all! I don’t mind sharing, but I’ve had very little for myself except peppers and herbs. I guess it’s meant to be ☺️ Nature has its ways. Have a lovely week ♥️

This is the first year I’ve planted anything I can eat, since I’ve been more concerned in the past with growing for pollinators. Well, I planted jalapeños and strawberries, and I’ve gotten to eat neither because the animals keep eating them! They also ate every seed I tried to direct sow in the garden (thanks, birds), and the three sunflower seedlings I transplanted. Raised beds next year, I think, and some system to keep the naughty chipmunks out. 🤦‍♀️ At least the wildlife is well fed! 🤣

The apple & pear cucumbers really surprised me, I've never heard about them before!

This spring the dayflower is growing in your garden. This particular flower is only in bloom for one day a year. You can see the little buds growing each day. One day in the late summer some of the beautiful, blue and yellow flowers have bloomed. You pick some and admire others. The next day the first ones are gone and new ones have bloomed. The next day the same happens and the next until one day they stop. You are so happy that you were able to enjoy the flowers and await their next arrival. You go into your house and fall asleep while sipping on the tea brewed from this plant and dream of the coming autumn.

My tomatoes are just starting to ripen here in WVa. But my squash and cucumbers are gone. The extreme weather affected everything here . But I am grateful for the tasty crop I do have. I check my cherry tomatoes every day and eat all the red ones! 🍅 😋

Enjoyed the garden update 💗 Yes, nature has a way of doing its own timing. The garden makes me grateful for the grocery store and farmer’s market because I stare at my garden and think I can’t get my plants to behave. Sometimes some thrive and others not so much, this year even my herbs are being slow. So I had to change my mindset from thinking I was a terrible newbie gardener of 6 years to be grateful that even the smallest bounty of Herbs,flowers or vegetable . 😊 I am guilty of being an impatient gardener and my grandfather always said, “ You take care of plants and they become trees, it takes time. The tree gives when it is ready not when you are impatient for fruit.” He always spoke in riddles about life but it’s so true… my younger self had no idea what he was talking about other than his literal fruit trees. The riddle works as both for an impatient gardener or someone needing to slow down, remembering that all good things take time. If they weren’t meant to harvest it will be disappointing but life and nature will keep moving forward.

I love veggies herbs from the gardens . Yes seemed like everthing in the States was behind as well 😒 & blew up grew like crazy now stuff seems to be going away. Those YUMMIE GREEN TOMATOES can me fry or baked in butter milk egg breab crumbs .

Green tomatoes are good for slicing, rolling in some corn meal and frying. If they are mature enough to be harvested, you can always put them in the window sill to ripen.

It's actually still the end of winter here in Australia so l havnt done my vegie garden yet, only my pots are thriving at the monment, Sorry to hear about your vege, might need to have them covered ground might be too cold for them to ripened, Dad use to do it, 👍🤔❤️🙏

I must have been on your wavelength today, because earlier I found myself wishing for one of your "pottering" videos. This was lovely, thank you.

I used to help my parents grow tomatoes when I was growing up but this is the first year I've had my own garden. I started 20 zinnias and only two managed to survive, I started 40 marigolds and none of them survived. My cucumber plant has only produced 2 cucumbers and they were way bigger than they were supposed to be and they never turned green. My tomatoes are thriving but are just now starting to turn red, I'm hoping to harvest my first ripe tomato in a day or so. I don't know a lot about gardening but I do remember as a kid harvesting tomatoes by the middle to end of July but I figured mine were just late because I got them started late but I've been hearing a lot of people mention veggies being late this year.

I did kind of the same thing this year. I planted a bee rescue and local wild flower mix for the front yard and squash, zinniahs, and sunflowers in the back yard. The squash may be the only real successful one I grew in the back yard, even though one of the zinniahs there might be hope for so far. The sunflowers haven't been successful, except for the small wild ones in the front yard, which I love. The whole front yard did great, except the part between the bench and sidewalk. Lots of bees and butterflies visiting, which makes me happy.

Thankyou for this lovely soothing potter in your garden. NZ is in level 4 lockdown this week so it can be a bit of an anxious time. I Am enjoying pottering in my garden. Since your previous video on self heal I have been keeping an eye out for it. I have found one or two flowers so far that went straight in to the tea. Hoping more will appear as we move into spring and summer. I have a row of jars on my window ledge with different flowers and leaves infusing in them. I enjoy the slow pace of the infusion and making up potions and lotions with them.

I do lavender oil all the time! My aunt taught me how. It's basically the same process you show in the video.

Beautiful footage- thanks so much! The timing of my gardens in Maine has been off kilter also- tomatoes will ripen nicely in brown paper bags if needed ☺

You can also wrap each green tomato individually in newspaper; one year I ate my last ripe tomato from the garden in late November.

Here in Oregon we call those lemon cucumbers, eaten like an apple, no need to peel. A favorite fresh picked snack while checking on the garden.

Vegetables are 3-4 weeks late here in Kansas too (middle of U.S.). If your tomatoes grow but don’t get red, you could try Fried Green Tomatoes, a speciality in the southern U.S.

I too have seen a weird shift of the weather. I told you before I live in Northern California, and I'm watching a over case sky. Cooler in August usually hotter. Yes we're have fire season which I don't like as a season. I'm not a vegan and I'm make shashuca with what vegetables I have around. Dice celery and onions with my favorite spicy Mezzetta sauce. Than you break 4 eggs and toss some feta. Toast some wheat bread to dip into it. I put bird seeds out but now I see wild squirrels dancing around, giving my cat inside something to watch. This season my basil wants to put up seeds fast that's usually for this time were I'm at. So I've been picking the flowers to dry as a spice for winter soups. There is a weird fall vibe around here I feel it coming. August usually is the hottest 100 degrees here. Believe me I'm thankful it isn't. Keep up the hard work......your one of my morning routine to watch.

I know that as lemon cucumber! I have little cornichons this year and zucchini. Hoping the autumn veg Will grow Better than the summer ones. My tomatoes are all for the bin, it rained for 3months non stop. I have the Same rainbow chard, it's loving the extra watering..

Our gardens here in Northern California are off this year as well. Two blistering heat waves in late May and late June scorched the roses and in the kitchen garden our veg are very slow. We've had some lovely courgette but the tomatoes have only just set, the sweet peppers are not many and only one chili pepper! Thankfully the herbs are doing well, they seem to be the most resilient. Calendula mixed with coconut butter/oil is also great for treating burns! (after cooling the burn with water of course)

Our garden is also a bit behind in the southern US. We just picked our last squash. We have had SO many tomatoes that we have enough marinara sauce for the year. Now we are just sharing them with friends. We freeze our extra cucumbers, cut into small pieces and use it in our smoothies instead of ice for a fresh flavor!! We also made our last stuffed pepper dinner, as now the bugs are making them their dinner these days😉❤️

I'm in the southern hemisphere and every year I take a picture of the first jasmine bloom and send it to a handful of my closest people. This year, my first blossom opened yesterday - 3 weeks later than last year and the year before! 2019 =31 July, 2020=1 August, this year=21 August! PS I'm so happy Fairyland is back this week, I admit I was ever so disappointed last week 😟🙈 It was kind of you, but I did miss YOUR forest and cottage and garden and flowers and bird feeder and birds and greenness... Need I go on? ☺️🧚‍♂️🍄🌺

:) you can get red tomatos, if you put them to the apple. I learned it recently on an urban gardening guided tour in Munich.

You can make an oil or a salve from St John’s Wort too, it is great for healing cuts and sores. You could even use it as a poultice after drinking the tea.

Here in the American southwest, we call it lemon cucumbers. We have had very little rain so many things did not grow very well. It’s been a hard year to garden. But we do the best that we can.

I have those similar cucumbers, lemon cucumber, I like them because there are not as acidic as regular cucumbers. We are also behind here in New England with our gardens, just made watermelon rind pickles for the first time, not bad, doesn't take like watermelon but refreshing, have a blessed week..

It's so funny that your garden year feels so similar to mine, altough I live in Germany. We also didn't have much sun this year. Instead lots of rain and slugs. Nothing really grew well, except of cucumbers! We harvested so many! Todays plan is also to make cucumber pickles. :)

Love your teas and lush veggies especially the cucumber. You were my inspiration for collecting loads of dock seeds for breadmaking last week. The only way I have succeeded in getting ripe tomatoes in July is to germinate cherry tomatoes in a jar in a warm place inside in January and grow them on in a small pot and then big pots, inside. The yellow ones ripen first. Finding it difficult to grow pumpkins outside for the last few years and growing beetroot to even a small size. I would love to live near the sea. How has living near the sea enriched your life and do you go for beach walks regularly ? Thanks Niamh. Enjoy your break.

I'm growing that cucumber too - mine is called "crystal lemon" - they are lovely! I eat them like fruit. I'm wondering if you could put your chillies in pots and have them in your house - they may fruit in the autumn/winter or even next year - they are perennials.

We have grown our chili in a pot and it's 4 years old now and still gives chilis every year😊so definitely try to take it inside over winter

I think that a lot of people are having issues with their gardens this year! we planted stuff for the first time this year like butternut squash and watermelon. both are extremely small! but the flavor is there, just not the size! I blame it on not enough water. So next year we are putting in more raised beds and definitely getting a timer for watering! thanks for sharing! xoxo

Niamh, if you do a search for Julia Child cucumber soup, you'll find something nice. :)

My garden started out well this year, but the grasshoppers have driven me to distraction. My roma tomatoes only put out a few, and they never ripened. I only have a couple of pepper plants left. Time for more research to get ready for next year! Good video as always.

Such a nice video to watch. I have been feeling the need to be out in nature but we are currently stuck in yet another lockdown in Sydney and not being able to even go to the local national park has been making me anxious. I love watching your channel whenever I'm not feeling good, they just make me feel so calm. Also never been this early for a video before!

Gosh so sorry to hear that! Not even being able to go to a park is harsh. Try your best to get your bare feet on some soil or grass even for 5 mins. This will give you the benefit of earthing!

Yea being in lockdown stinks but we’re only in lockdown because of inconsiderate, uneducated and downright selfish people who share your opinions. I hope the people who are “fighting” as you say are at the very least arrested and sent to prison for second degree murder cause every time you leave the house without a mask you are killing people.

I stopped masking and staying inside June 2020 and I have never looked back.You are being told people like me are the enemy. They want to divide us. They are using fear to do this.This is a virus with a survival rate of over 99.8%. Let that number sink in and ask yourself what is going on here.

My tomatoes are finally turning red and have been lucky none of the critters have been eating them……..yet. No peppers and I will not be getting any hot ones either it seems. Didn’t plant much this year, doing a bit of reorganizing and clean up in the garden. My small veg one is becoming my herb garden and next year have plans to work on a much bigger plot for my veg. I love a good garden reorganisation. It’s also good to give the soil a rest for a year so it will bloom the following year.

I know the cucumbers as "Crystal Apple" variety. If you take your chilli plants indoors over late autumn/winter, they will continue to grow very slowly, but be well ahead for next year - they are a tender, short lived perennial.

We are on Long Island on East Coast of the U.S. and our tomatoes - same! Taking so long to get red. And I'm glad you showed those cucumbers. I purchased what I thought were Boston pickling cucumbers seeds, however, they grew very round and small like yours. I am wondering if mine were a variety like that.

I look forward to your videos like a child does waiting for their Saturday morning cartoons!! 😁. I’m always left feeling uplifted, inspired, appreciative for all that I have, and finding ways to make my heaven right where I am! 😃👍💕 🏡

Due to the weird weather this year, my garden did not thrive like I'd hoped. I've heard this is the case with many other people as well. Nevertheless, your garden still looks lovely. Infusing flowers in oil is something I've always wanted to try. That's next on my list :)

Now that I am not working, I plant around the house started with different plants then vegetables bit by bit determining what is best to plant based on our season. This also helps me in my sustainable living as I am more conscious in everything I do. Kitchen scraps are really separated which I can do organic fertilizer for my vegetables. Now I also rely on natural therapy for any symptoms might encounter and not rely on pharmacy medicines. Which aided me when I was not feeling good last week. Have a wonderful week, Niamh! 🌸🌺

Those are called lemon cucumbers in my region. They're my favorite cucumber. My tomatoes are still green and the weather is cooling off. Fall is coming, there is a tang in the air and flocks of geese flying overhead.
