Porsche 915 Transmission Overview Time-Lapse Build

We wanted to show all the work on the 915 transaxle build. So we made a time-lapse video of the job with a commentary about 915 transmissions.
Hope you enjoy this short version and keep an eye out for the detailed lessons on each part of this build.

    Very educational! I like the segment about driving behavior, I don't think I'll be driving with my hand on the shifter anymore!

    Everything is done here, identical to the old days, but with modern technics it's a very good job, you are a reference for the world now :)

    Would greatly appreciate a video of disassembly/reassembly in the same detail you did the heads. Of course the all secret high art of ring and pinion depth. Discuss if this be done well w/o factory tools, alternatives? Differentials lsd vs gears, case weak points and how to read surfaces for wear. 915 mag/alum - and G50 01. What is a true “rebuild”? maybe even discuss some of the popular gear ratios QQ...etc? Very much love your quality of production but most importantly your knowledge-base. Happy to support anyway I can. Although, just catching steam these vids are a gem in the community. Thanks so much. You are appreciated, keep it up!

    I have never changed between a summer and a winter oil in the transmission. I have two brands of oil that I use, Swepco or Sta-Lube, both oils are a GL-5 spec and are 75W/90 weight. with these oils I have not experienced any shifting issues in either very cold or very hot ambient conditions. Thanks for watching Kurt

    @@klassikats Sounds good, thank you! I have just found your channel. Do you have, or can you make a gear shift linkage adjustment video? My second gear is a bit crunchy, but I am not sure if the linkage out of adjustment or the trans needs a rebuild. Thank you!

    @@KoenigsTiger957 Yes we can do a video setting up the gear shift. A lot of people struggle with that. Also, the 915 transmission tends to take a beating on the 2nd gear. So if 4th gear feels normal and the shifter is in the right place then it is most likely not an adjustment. Thanks for all the comments... Kurt

    The Transmission looks to me like the most complex system to rebuild. Would you say it’s best to just outsource it to a reputable service provider?

  • @klassikats

    @klassikats

    Yes that is usually the best option. The main reason being the special tools required. Most of the tools I used in this video I have had for the last 25 years or more and are no longer available. It also doesn't make sense to try and buy them for just one job, unless you are planning on going into the business. Kurt

    Where you guys located and the cost for rebuilding 915 trans?

    Jesse, We are in Flagstaff AZ, and pricing can really vary depending on the internal condition of your transmission. To give you an idea costs start around $1900 and can easily go to $6000 depending on condition of parts once the cases are split. Thanks Kurt

    Hoi , very good and understadebel explination. I have a rebuild 915 from 1975 2,7 gearbox and its wining like hell, it was rebuild in 2003 and at that moment i driven with it 800km. In that time i went to the shop who rebuild it and he say to me that the wining go away with driving, after the 800km driving ,i stopped driving with it becouse i think its goiing to blow up. I have to say that in that time the man who do the rebuild work alone and gets allot of telefoon so its interrupted his work all the time. Easey for make mistakes. There are all new bearings in the 915 , not the needle bearings. I assume someting must be loose inside . I have a small video with 1 wheel off the ground and let the gearbox spin the wheel in some gears. The other wheel is on the ground. I have also a 1984 3,2 where i did the same for see the difference off wining. I am on holiday until end off jan but the video clips from the wining i have here on my laptop. I will try to post it here. The box with all the parts replaced i still have in my home. About a year ago i went to a oldschool mecanic and let him drive the porsche 911 2,7 with the wining gearbox. His first impression was that it sounds like the gearbox makes sound like it have straight teeth in the gearbox. Have to say that the man who rebuild the gearbox is a proffessional rebuilder for porsche and VW engines and other heads work to. He is on pension now but he not helped me in that time. whent to see him back in that time few times with that problem and the last time him said to me that the needle bearings also have to make new and it will cost me again the same like i paid him before> I find this unbelivebel,if i see your videos when you take it all appart and you inspect every part than i assuming that he did the same normaly. Before i gave him the ok for rebuild him told me that the gearbox will be as new when he finis the job.

    So a few questions for you; Did the transmission whine before being rebuilt? Does the transmission whine in all gears at any speed? Does the whining sound change with speed? (become higher pitched the faster you go) lastly does the whine go away when you let off the gas pedal or does it stay the same? So bearings when they fail usually will not whine, instead they tend to make a growling sound that gets louder as road speed increases. Bearing noises will also change with load depending on the bearing that is failing. Most whining sounds come from gear mesh issues usually with the ring and pinion. If the ring and pinion have been incorrectly set up then they will be noisey. If the ring and pinion have been used for some length of time with an incorrect setting it can often cause them to become noisey. Even resetting the gear sets to the correct specifications often will not quieten the gears due to an incorrect wear pattern. Just so you know whines in a transmission never get better by themself. The shift quality will improve in a 915 as you drive the car but there should be no unusual noise coming from the transaxle. Seeing the wear on a ring and pinion can be really tough sometimes. It is something I would have to hear to diagnose the issue. Not sure a video would work but if you want send me a link to our email contact@klassikats.com I will see what it sounds like. Kurt

    @@klassikats Thanks for reply Kurt. Its 20 year ago that i bay the car. I am not sure anymore but i think the gearbox was wining when i bay the car . I am on holiday until end off januari and will make some small video s from what i here in the car when driving and will test and record for the acceleration and the other things you write above. 3 small video s i will sent to your mail with the car running with 1 wheel off the ground and i go true some gears. When i push in the clutch and the wheel comes to stop while the engine is running than there is no more noises. When i am back home i wil send the video s while i am driving the car so can here alot more off what noises it produce.Grtz geert
