The Dreaded Ring And Pinion Depth Measurements and Why You Should Care
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This poor Porsche 911 transaxle keeps challenging me. I've already had to swap the entire gearbox case, mainshaft & first gear, and now the differential. Wow, so much for an easy pops out third gear fix. At least I enjoy gearboxes more than sanding, ha ha. Thanks so much for watching this much detail.
Here's the puller I used to get the diff bearings off - amzn.to/3GtjXdL

Explained very well.
Very informative.
Great video . It would be very interesting to make a video how to install the shafts on the upgraded one piece bearing retainer. Thanks for the work you make

Will do on the next one. It will be a bit harder pushing the bearings on. Did you see the pic of my new parts? I'm excited

Also the 356 trans has a one piece retainer oddly enough.

Love the garage diy build!

Thanks! Anyone can do this
Again, awesome stuff!
Fascinating! Nice MacGyver on the diy depth gauge do-la-bob to measure pinion depth, lash, etc. It may pay for me to someday learn the gearbox rebuild for my 911. I saw a place in AZ will go through the whole gearbox for 1k. I thought that’s fair. Then I keep hearing peeps come out of the place with a 10k+ final invoice 🥴. I have all factory manuals, it would be the tools, presses and gear pullers to buy. Nice work! Must of been real exciting doing your first gearbox. 🤓😂.

$1k to take apart and then invoice for a bunch of new parts is a good business strategy, ha ha.
That's impressive! I read up a lot of info from Grady Clay on the early 911/912 and Pelican forums.

Great info on Pelican always. Also the Zimmerman tutorial is well done. We are living in the information overload age!
Thank you Tom. To bad about that bearing spinning. Ugh. Enjoy your videos very much. Have good Easter if you celebrate.

I know bummer right. That differential doesn't look good. I plan to buy a limited slip differential for my other Transaxle so I can rob the differential from that transmission in the blue box that I bought disassembled. The ends on that one are nice. Happy easter!
Great work as always! Always enjoy.

Ha ha, don't tell anyone I've never built a 915 before. 😃
Hope you have several diffs to set up to make all of the time spent making that tool to measure the pinion depth worth it. I know that took some effort to make that tool and to get it set up.

Is three enough?

With tools like many of yours, the more you are able to use them, the more they pay for themselves.

Agree! I have toolbox of stuff just waiting
Hi i was wondering about the diff housing. a good machinist could bring down a few millimeters the damage surface and then put a hardened ring ideally from a bearing case with the cold hot and glue method . And after machining the new ring to the bearing spec installing the new bearing. I hope you understand what i want to say. What do you thing about this method?
hey tom why dont you put the race on dry ice too?

That works. Just lazy I guess plus I knew the press fit wasn't that tight already.
Tom do you do 993 transmission video???

No, only 741 and 915
How do you set/zero the dial indicator?
@GarageTimeAutoResto
Жыл бұрын
Guage blocks to the flat surface milled into the carrier.
What do you calibrate or “zero” your indicator to?
@GarageTimeAutoResto
Жыл бұрын
I have a guage block that touches the milled flat surface of the diff carrier and the plunger. Actually it's two pin guages and a mill parallel laid on top. That is how I calibrate the mitutoyo digital dial indicator.
