Really great to see you both affected and appreciating this. Dave is a Don (I gorra say GOAT nowadays) Boris Johnson, our PM, is an architect of Brexit and has said and published some seriously old school racist stuff you might not even get, and I'm not gonna repeat on here (that's what googley woogley is for) -suppose he's an equal opportunities offender - black people, muslim people, gay men, single mums, the working class in general... The Windrush generation really exposes the differences and similarities between the racism in the UK and US. So we ditched slavery per se coupla hundred years ago, but obvs still did and do profit from it. We had an Empire and many of those nations became a 'commonwealth', and still 'owe' allegiance to the Queen. Some were only granted independence v recently - Nigeria where Dave's folk are from and family still live only in 1963, hence the line "black is representing countries that never even existed when your grandmother was living". The Windrush was a ship, one of several that transported immigrants from the commonwealth (West Indies and other places) to live in the UK after WW2 to help rebuild the country and become the staff of the NHS, transport system, teachers etc. About 10 years ago the UK Government starting deporting some of these individuals and their children and it was discovered that the PM then, when she'd been Home Secretary, had ordered the landing papers from the boats to be shredded destroying the paper trail to show black and brown folk where here legally (its still ongoing) Dave's brothers have/are doing time (his blackbox tells some of that , he's v young) and Jack Merritt the guy in the photos was a rehab'/equality activist, who worked with Dave's family. He and Saskia Jones also pictured, were from Cambridge Uni running a course bringing together offenders and people in higher education, and were murdered in the London Bridge terrorist attack.

Something important to add to this brilliant breakdown... As Dave knew Jack Merritt personally, he invited his parents to the Brits to see this performance. The verse about their son is an addition to the original, so he surprised them with it. They said it was a beautiful way to honour their son and that it was heartwarming to hear the crowd cheer his name and picture. The line about proper sentences just papering cracks was said in support of the Merritt family. After the London Bridge terror attack, Boris (our idiot prime minister) tried to use it as justification for increasing minimum sentencing, saying that "proper sentences" would have stopped this. Jack was a prison reform advocate who argued strongly for rehabilitation and would have hated the idea of the system getting worse in his name - so his father spoke out against it and told Boris not to misuse his son's memory. This line in the song echoed what the Merritt family were saying, supporting them and getting the message out to a far larger audience. Dave really did truly honour his friend with a beautiful tribute.

The Windrush generation helped build the UK again after WW2. They came from predominantly Caribbean countries at the invitation of the UK government. In 2018 many were threatened with deportation, denied legal rights, lost homes, lost jobs. Grenfell was a tower block in London that was destroyed by fire in 2017 killing 72 people. The fire was caused by dangerous cladding. Leslie Thomas QC who represents some of the families has repeatedly said, "Grenfell is inextricably linked with race..." It is worth a Google, same with Windrush. Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones (who was also pictured), were both killed in the London Bridge terror attacks. Jack and Saskia worked in prisoner rehabilitation. Jack worked with Dave's brother and he knew him well.

The Windrush scandal was a 2018 British political scandal concerning people who were wrongly detained, denied legal rights, threatened with deportation and in at least 83 cases wrongly deported from the UK by the Home Office. Many of those affected had been born British subjects and had arrived in the UK before 1973, particularly from Caribbean countries as members of the "Windrush generation" (so named after the Empire Windrush, the ship that brought one of the first groups of West Indian migrants to the UK in 1948).

I'm months behind in this comment, but just adding on. My dad and husband family were part of this. Uk said they needed skilled workers and promised fair pair. So they went over, qualified members, teachers, doctors, trades men etc, to get here, be treated like dirt and given chappy low paying jobs, such as road and rail workers, sewage and cleaners etc. These were professionals with qualifications that the UK didn't recognise. Put in slum accommodation with terrible pay, no rights and widespread racism. My dad came over and joined the army at 16, fought for the UK, to then around 2005 ish t be told he's not a citizen and be refused a UK passport, a man who had spent most of his life in this country. Still makes me mad if you can't tell! My dad passed away before the deportation debacle, passed away aged 65, with 50 of those spent in the UK, but he still would have been one of those up for deportation. From someone who is a child of the Windrush generation, I hope that helps.

The Windrush Generation came to Britain on a ship called Windrush. They came in 1948. THEIR SOLE REASON for coming was to rebuild Britain after the Second World War. Due to this generation, the NHS (our heath care) was built (thanks to Blk women in particular despite facing sooo much, my goodness, makes me wanna scream) aswell as alot of other sectors like transport and much more. Those that came over were college/University educated or had their own trade, however were not allowed the jobs they deserved. They were told they were British citizen because THEY WERE. They had passports that said so officially - legally, because they were from countries that were colonised by Britain. The Windrush Scandal came as a result of the BRITISH govt taking that citizenship away from people who have been here since the 40s, 50s and 60s. They were deporting this generation back to Jamaica and Trinidad (for example - those were some of the many countries) even though most of these people had GROWN UP in Britain their whole lives, when the scandal started alot of those sent packing came on the ship but as very little children. And this scandal was under wraps and so the campaigning for it wasn't huge because many people had no idea it was happening unless it was your family or you heard about it. Until it was more publicised and exposed, it is so disgusting. But yeah that's a brief overview! Hope it was comprehensive enough lol! But there's loads of material on it. I like listening to audiobooks personally so great info out there.

The way they achieved the effect on the top of the piano's was kind of complicated but basically it goes like this.. They get a very high quality projector,. They get a steadicam operator who is also of a high quality and has some time on his hands as he will be needed to do many rehearsals to make sure his movements are exactly the same each time. Then you take a Startracker placed above the stage, with markers that the Startracker can detect. Then using those markers, they can plot the exact angular position of the piano and camera man which lets then project the image giving the effect of movement in perfect time with the movements of the steadicam operator as Startracker has everything synced in real time. To the naked eye, the projection was 2D and distorted, but everyone watching at the O2 Arena and at home saw 3D visualisation. I Hope this is helpful.

Dave won Best Album on the night of this award ceremony and also gave this, the best performance I think we'll see at the Brits for a long time. And you're damn right there were complaints - around 15,000, all about the line about the PM save a few about it being "racist" to opine about the black experience. My understanding is that they were dismissed, but I find it weird that no one complained about the lines about the royals or the reparations part. You'd expect it just as much from them. The image on top of the piano wasn't an LED screen as others have said (see Dave casting shadows over it at the end of the performance). It was an overhead projector and a series of 72 markers on the floor allowing the projector to cast an image that would look 3D and appropriately oriented with the camera as it moved around the set. There's a nice interview somewhere out there on the web about the tech behind it if you're in to that kind of thing. Dice7820 has quite possibly the best eye I've seen in reactions to it thus far, you didn't miss a thing!

I'm a white Eastern European living in UK so not like I grew up surrounded by British people, but I'd say British people were loving this and agreed with him thoroughly. The shit Boris Johnson has said is disgusting and I can't describe my amazement of him becoming the PM at all after the things he has said before. But the only people that had a problem with his performance were the people that are the problem in the first place. So fuck their opinions anyways.

You missed the bar he said about his Ghanaian brother doing a DNA test and funding out he's Egyptian. He's referencing the ancestry of the ancient Egyptians from before 1800bc(the hyksos invasion). They were descendants of the L2 maternal haplogroup which is the group shared by all western africans.

@@YoungbloodPoetry Fun fact: All anatomically modern homo sapiens that did not evolve within sub saharan Africa are descendants of a mutation of that same L2 group. The divergence occurred over 180k years ago when modern humans left Africa and spread across the Earth. This L2 group (that is currently known for living in West Africa) was originally situated across the entire modern Sahara desert(which would have been rainforest before 8000 years ago), East Africa, the Sahel region(band of desert and rainforest underneath the Sahara), and up to the Niger-Congo delta. From a period 8000-5000 years ago; this group spread out over Africa and travelled deep into West Africa. This was known as the bantu expansion. Funnily enough; around this same time is said to be when farming culture supposedly originating from Iraq(most likely came from Africa first but we know they hate us) and spread around the world. 8-5000 years ago was very significant in human history and the development of the intelligent human. This is also when we supposedly developed complex speech, and written language, and the first empires were starting to form. Very ironic that the timings coincide with the migration and movement of this L2 haplogroup. I.e. the evolution of humanity is heavily tied in with the fate of this L2 haplogroup.

It was very controversial at the time answering your question on that. Daves brother is in prison and the headline was something like “rapper signs about how is criminal brother should be given lesser sentence” Jack merit who he raps about being his brother in arms was a white 25 year old lad who helped convicted violent criminals become rehabilitated and better people and not just being given long sentences he helped daves brother. Sadly jack merit was stabbed to death in a terrorist attack on London Bridge

Dave is a genius. I am a white immigrant who feels pride in my fellow immigrants, the white guy he references, Jack Merrick was a prison worker who died protecting his charges from a terrorist attack. Dave is the shit. I am white, my nephew's favourite artist is Dave. Windrush was the government kicking people out of our country who gave their all, simply because they were black, and their papers were 'lost', Jack Merrick, who was white, happened to work with his brother, who is in prison, and was kind, so after his death, Dave invited Jack's family to be his free tickets, they did not know he would spot bars about their son. Our prime minister is a real racist, he once referred to black people as pickaninies. He is a c**t. Dave speaks the truth, his two albums (so far) are works of genius, and to see Americans get him, is beautiful. I love, particularly, the line "you say we are the least racist, but the thing about the least racist, is that they are still racist" Check Dave out, is all I am saying.

Windrush, after WW2 in the 60's the UK gov asked many Caribbean families (many UK "territories" in Caribbean) , to come to UK and work and live, to help rebuild the country after the war. Trouble was it was not welcomed by many and also many of the Caribbean families were sold an inflated dream, and essentially lied too about how things would be and the opportunities available. Of course this was made worse by Local White poor families seeing the influx as a threat to their own lively hoods. I genuinely think the Government completely fucked up in how they handled the whole thing , and are still fucking up now. Their actions made what would have been a racially and culturally tense situation...much , much worse. So you have a situation now where many 2nd 3rd even 4th generation Black Caribbean families are settled here, and understandably many feel let down by the UK gov, which to be honest I thin most of the UK does ,most of the time, regardless of colour. But on top of that there is no denying from a sane objective mind that Non white people and I would say Black people in particular have had a harder time in the UK from a jobs , school, and Law enforcement POV. Things are getting better and are better than they were when I was young, but still there is discrimination. However, I think it's actually only a matter of time before the UK see's racism, I wont say vanish, not sure it ever will, but diminish to the point where its not a major thing for most people. People may say that's unlikely, but I would reply with this....regardless of attitudes, funding, etc etc, the fastest growing ethnic group in the UK, and by a huge margain, is Black White mixed race. This will mean by the time I am an old man, the majority of the UK will be mixed race. The majority of this country will have white and black lineage in the very recent past. This does not mean things cant improve before that and in other ways, but its good to know that it WILL diminish, and it is only a matter of time. The same will probably happen in the US, but due to size it will take far longer

The video on the piano will be done by a big LED screen, then the pianos on either end of the LED screen. UK politics - Dave isn't wrong, but it was MAD that Dave said this, cause British people are very conservative and natual culture is to always be polically correct. Media kicked off soon as this was aired LIVE!! Jack Merrit was killed at 25, he was a course coordinator at Learning Together, he organised prison rehab conferences. The guy who killed Jack acc attended a conference before he killed Jack as well as another women (which are the 2 pictures in the video). Jack even knew the guy and when he was killed he was trying to help him, the guy was armed with knives and wearing a fake suicide vest. So sad!!! Killer in the end was shot by the police.

The projection of the images were way more complicated than that,. It goes like this..

People need to learn their history, the windrush generation refers to people that came over from the Carribbean to rebuild England after the 2nd world war. The ship that carried the first arrivals was named windrush, hence the name. England still had s number of connolial countries were they could find cheap labour. Many were recruited into nursing or transport roles, like my mother who came to London on a promise that things would be better for her. This was not the case, many of our people of colour were subjected to extreme racism

Ok, Wayne seems to have you covered for more Dave music, so i'll try fill in some of the other questions for ya. Windrush Between 1948 and 1970, nearly half a million people moved from the Caribbean to Britain, which in 1948 faced severe labour shortages in the wake of the Second World War. The immigrants were later referred to as "the Windrush generation". Our prime minister Boris Johnson, is a posher better educated version of Trump, a massive racist windbag. Jack Merritt was the guy Dave was paying tribute to in the photo, he and a few others were murdered as part of a terrorist incident in London a few years ago, He worked to help prisoners rehabilitate and fit back into society, he knew Dave's family because Dave's brother went to jail for 18 years for murder when Dave was younger. The other guy playing piano was Fraser T. Nelson someone who collaborates with dave.

Why is it that, what Dave is spitting is so raw it wrenches your heart, yet all I see lately is reactions to Tom MacDonald or some other dude, and in the song Tom or whoever is crying about the fact that those decrying racial discrimination/profiling/racism etc. are sowing the seeds of division??? There's something not adding up here! I know what's not adding up, but it's infuriating to witness, especially from reactor's I'd have thought better of.
