Jack Merrit, who Dave referenced in this song, worked for a programme ran by Cambridge university that helped rehabilitation of prisoners. He was unfortunately killed in a terror attack in London, hence the tribute. He actually worked directly with Dave’s brother who is in prison so this was a very personal message. For more context, this was at the Brit awards, which as you probably know is a massive event for British television. Dave actually won the album of the year for psychodrama at the same awards show so all eyes were on him. Not only was choosing the song black a very powerful way for him to use the platform he had, the last verse is not in the original song and was written just for that award show. Coming out with such powerful words, on the biggest stage when he was the biggest act at the time, was very very powerful. I remember crying watching that, it was an incredibly moving experience for me as a Brit and huge Dave fan.

I'm from London England and I remember when Dave performed this set live at the Brit Awards. Some people accused Dave of being racist which was and still is, absurd. I guess some people find it very uncomfortable to sit with the truth.

Couple of things for non UK listeners. The Windrush generation helped build the UK again after WW2. They came from predominantly Caribbean countries at the invitation of the UK government. In 2018 many were threatened with deportation, denied legal rights, lost homes, lost jobs. Grenfell was a tower block in London that was destroyed by fire in 2017 killing 72 people. The fire was caused by dangerous cladding. Leslie Thomas QC who represents some of the families has repeatedly said, "Grenfell is inextricably linked with race..." It is worth a Google, same with Windrush. Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones (who was also pictured), were both killed in the London Bridge terror attacks. Jack and Saskia worked in prisoner rehabilitation. Jack worked with Dave's brother and he knew him well. Great reaction btw, thanks! The whole album Psychodrama is worth a listen.

Oh Tom! This’ll be a long comment!!! Lol! This is one of my favourite performances ever! And such a brilliant track, I listen to Dave every day, so talented, wise beyond his years! My fav UK artist, I’m actually going to see him live next week and can’t wait! So, the Brit Awards in the UK are like the Grammy Awards in the US, so for Dave to chose this track to perform was awesome! The other guy in the piano is Fraser T Smith who is an absolute legend - amazing writer, record producer etc and has won numerous awards including Grammy, Brit, Ivor Novello, Mercury etc. He’s like the production/writing ‘cheat code’ in the UK and has co-written and/or produced for Adele, Sam Smith, Stormzy, Craig David, Kylie, Chip, Tinchy Stryker, N-Dubz, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Rag N Bone Man - I could go on and on! Lol! According to Dave, Fraser has helped him immeasurably over the years with guiding his career. He’s co-written and produced most of Dave’s tracks from when he was 17/18. (The ‘writing’ doesn’t necessarily mean the lyrics, it could be parts of the instrumental or arranging of the lyrics/melody/making the beats etc). He’s taught Dave how to produce so he can now do a lot of that himself too now. Also helps that Dave is super intelligent, fun. Fact - he gave up his place at Law School to make music instead! He talks about his background a lot in his music, his parents were Nigerian (just going from memory here so someone will correct me if I’m wrong lol!). His dad was a minister and his mum a nurse, his dad got deported from the uk for not having a working visa but his mum stayed to bring up Dave and his 2 brothers herself, working all hours at 2/3 jobs to keep food on the table. Both Dave’s brothers have been in jail, this is where the tie in to Jack Merrit comes in. He was a graduate of Cambridge university (extremely prestigious uni here in the uk) and helped to run a programme for rehabilitation of prisoners, helping those in prison and working with families of prisoners. He helped Dave’s family and his brother who is serving life for murder. His brother was convicted on the controversial ‘joint enterprise’ laws in the uk, whereby, you can be present at the scene of a crime, but not actually be participating and still be convicted. He was hanging with the wrong crowd and was present when a teenager was murdered by others in his group. Dave had invited Jack’s parents as his guests to the Brit Awards and they didn’t know he had added the tribute to Jack - I can’t even imagine what that must’ve been like for them! The third verse of this song was added for the Brits, the original ends before the lines about our prime minister being racist. Dave used his platform to address this, along with issues such as the racism Meghan Markle (Mariried to Prince Harry and mixed race) received and how she is treated differently to Kate (who is married to Harry’s brother Prince William). Dave wants to see unity in our communities, more funding for poorer communities, housing for the hundreds of people who lost their homes in the Grenfell Tower fire (the UK Government promised this and didn’t deliver) and help for the ‘Windrush’ generation - people for the Caribbean who were brought to the uk to help rebuild the twins and cities after the war - they were made promises that they’d be properly compensated and they weren’t. Sorry guys - such a long comment but I could talk about this performance all day lol!

@@ReactionTherapyOfficial you’re very welcome Tom! Dave is such a talent - he closed the show at the most recent Brit Awards too, a couple of weeks ago - and it was amazing! He chose a track with 4 other UK artists, Fredo, Meekz, Ghetts and Giggs - who are all great, he could’ve picked one of his tracks where it was just him, but chose to share the spotlight and it was epic! ! I’m still playing catch up on the channel lol! You’ve reacted to some great tracks that I can’t wait to listen to!

Dave mentioned Grenfell at the end of this. Grenfell tower burned down killing over 80 people in London. The disaster was a direct result of council cuts that made the building unsafe. UK rapper Lowkey lived in the building next door and was there. He's done a few songs to raise awareness of the situation. The first is called Ghosts of Grenfell. I recommend it for a reaction. Keep a box of tissues handy.

I was at work in shepherds bush the day Grenfell happened and working for a charity went up to support with food and clothes donations. It was surreal that I went home and saw it on tv and listened to politicians argue over who bore responsibility for rehoming and who deserved rehoming when to this day it's been swept under the carpet while people still suffer.

The "go home" was reference to graffiti that was very prevalent in the uk directed at non whites to go back to their home i.e. Caribbean, Asia etc. I think you may have confused the point with blacks telling blacks "go home "for example not "leaving the hood" or the "endz"
