I was born, raised, and still live in the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia in the USA. My grandparents on my father's side were born in 1905 and 1906 and lived their lives here as well. They both lived through the Great Depression and it affected their daily lives from there on. For example, my Granny Elsie learned to identify, locate, harvest, and preserve many types of native wild edibles. She knew their respective seasons and growing habits and when to pick them at the peak of freshness. I seldom traveled with them without Granny scouting or stopping to check or harvest wild greens, berries, fruits, and nuts. She called physalis Ground Cherries. She often picked them wild and even grew them in her flower beds and along the sidewalk. She made Ground Cherry preserves, which had a wonderful flavor and texture. It was just one of so many foods we always seemed to have on hand and enjoy because she shared them so graciously with us all. What a strong and amazing and loving lady she was.

Thanks for the information. A plant just miraculously sprouted up on the raised veggie bed and it's fruiting. I have never seen or tasted one before. Thank you, God. 😊
