Overwintering Cape Gooseberries + Ground Cherry vs Gooseberry Fruit

Today i'm showing you our overwintering of the Gooseberries & the visible differences between physalis pruinosa vs peruviana or the Cape Gooseberry vs Ground cherries fruit & taste profile.
Cape Gooseberries are an amazing superfood that has many names, Peruvian groundcherry, Aztec berry, Golden Berry, Husk Cherry, Ground Cherry, and famously Inca Berry! The Physalis cultivars in the nightshade family are broken into groups like: Physalis peruviana (Cape Gooseberry), Physalis pruinosa (Ground Cherry), & The tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica and Physalis ixocarpa) Etc.

    I loved this video. It was so informative and the best comparison I've seen between the two berries. I am in the Atlanta, GA area and recently found some wild ground cherry plants (I think) growing in my garden. I almost took them out because I was doing some weeding, and thought they were toxic, but left them in and have been learning about them. They are still green, so I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but I am really looking forward to it. I have never heard of either Gooseberries or Groundcherries because I've lived in California for the last 35 years. The farm life is very new to me. I hope your plants and farming experience turn out well.

    Thank you for the video! I’m growing ground cherries for the first time and I was curious about how they were different from cape gooseberries. I can’t wait to see your next video and hope you find a market for the ground cherries. They just started selling them in the US and the sweeter taste is more marketable here.

    Would love to share photos of my cape gooseberries if I can figure out how. Mine grow at 2400 meters asl. I was not impressed with the cultivars available . They were large and beautiful but had no flavor. They were also susceptible to various diseases. We decided to collect the best plants we could find growing wild here on the ranch. We concentrated on flavor selecting only the best tasting plants. The kids were invaluable in this endeavor. We took cuttings from the best plants and planted them directly into the rows with a little bit of composted manure and kept them watered. You know how fast they grow! As this is a traditional food here in Ecuador, there is a ready market. Unfortunately, with the crisis, it is impossible for us or any of our neighbors to transport product to market. On the bright side, it can't last forever. Best wishes from far away in the Andes mountains. ~David

    Ahh wonderful, thanks so much for sharing this with me David. Lovely to hear from you all the way in Ecuador, but like Colombia i should've guessed you guys also know and love this fruit. Aww God bless you guys I pray you can start selling again soon, this is a very difficult time for us! We're in a similar situation where my elderly mother and father are on the farm alone and unable to get produce to market. And we the kids are stuck in uk until borders open! We've lost an entire year of income :-(. But in the bright side as you say the produce last long in storage... it's a blessed fruit! Are you on twitter we can follow each other and share there?

    They are high due to a lot of NITROGEN(N)...it would be best NOT to fertilize them with ORGANIC MANURE which is full of NITROGEN(N) because ALL FERTILIZER will go to building the GREEN part of the plant (stem and leaf)...use ECOLOGICAL FERTILIZERS with a LOT of PHOSPHORUS(P) and POTASSIUM(K) ... Great video and very informative. I went to Costa Rica and toured a farm that a Peace Corps volunteer was being housed at. I was blessed with the opportunity to taste Cape Gooseberries. They became my favorite fruit. I have not had the pleasure of trying them again and want to grow them myself. would you be willing to sell me some seeds? I am eager to have my very own gooseberry plant. I live in Florida and aspire to place them in a greenhouse. Do you have any tips or tricks? I am glad that you were able to provide me the distinction so that I don't end up getting the wrong plant.

    Physalis alkekengi, the Chinese lantern, is a fourth (or fifth, if you count P. philadelphiaca & P. ixocarpa separately) species in the Physalis genus that's widely grown. The fruits that ripen to a dark orange or red are said to be edible and quite tasty, though the fruit is by far the smallest of the five.

    In the first part of the above description you have P. peruviana as Ground cherries; but in the second part you have P. pruinosa as Ground Cherry. Could you please clarify? Also, another name for the Cape Gooseberry one is Pineapple Groundcherry. Thanks for the comparisons.

    Hi, What do you think the best variety is for hot, but rainy, humid weather, and can be grown in a smaller space to not overcrowd other plants, Also what is more prolific in weight, and flavour. Also growing this as a annual.

    Hi there, we are based in the northern cape od south africa. Oh ok they don't like long periods of cold and will go dormant soon after the 2nd frost, but can take a few hits if winter isn't too bad for where you are and still produce. But they will quickly revive in early spring and 2nd year plants are fantastic producers! :-)

    hey i've been growing them in pots in a colder climate, and as winter comes I'd like to bring them inside and have them go dormant. would you happen to know how? should I let them experience a few frost and bring them in, or cut back on water? thanks!

  • @AFamilyFarm

    @AFamilyFarm

    Hi, yes definitely cut back a lot on watering over winter. But I think it depends on what you want to do with the plants as well as how cold and how long winter is for you. If you want to prolong fruiting then a greenhouse or inside does well. If you bring them inside and cut them back in time you may actually get new slow growth over winter. Or you can just leave them outside, so long as it doesn't get too cold for too long, they will die back on their own and come back in spring. Hope this helps😃

    @@AFamilyFarm oh for them to survive here i'd definitely need to bring them inside since we get down to -30C. i was wondering if i can put it into dormancy by watering less, dormant as in almost like a tree, where it shed leaves in the autumn and wakes up in the spring.

    I am interested in knowing the botanical name of the Cape Gooseberry. I recently watched a Spanish-language video of a Physalis farm in Colombia, and the worker was saying that the variety was "Physalis Angulata". So I am wondering if the Ground Cherry might be Physalis peruviana? Do you have any insight into this?

    @@AFamilyFarm Thank you for your answer, and you seem to be more clear about this than most people I've seen. The only confusion in my mind is that farm manager in Colombia who said that the plant was Physalis angulata, instead of P. peruviana. But when I google Physalis angulata, it shows a very different plant than the peruviana. I think a lot of people think that the ground cherry is P. peruviana, but I am in agreement with you now.
