I have them yearly. I cultivate the wild annual variety! In pots and in ground. I love the aromatic sweetness of that fruit.

I started the seeds early April (indoors here in Whitby, Ontario, CA) and now I have a few that are doing well in pots outdoors; between 10 and 12" tall. No flowers as yet .. .. but I'm hoping to get some fruits before end of September!

In Guyana we call it papoose. They grow wild.

As others have said, eat them when the outer coating is brown, and the Berry inside is orange. Lovely! Also, I have mine in a hothouse and it loves it.

They taste like orange flavored tomatoes. It's weird but good. I saw them at the store today and thought I'd try it because I never heard of it before. It came from Colombia and grows in zones 8-11. I live in zone 9, so I will be saving some seeds and planting them next year.

Here, in India, I refrigerated these berries this January and on 16th June I dug some 1 inch hole in the soil and spread the seeds .They looked a bit like tomato seeds .On 26th June I saw little seedlings.😊

I stead of pouring the water and getting soil everywhere just us the bottom tray and fill it up the jus lift the top to drain

I am growing gooseberries for the first time. I am starting from seeds. If I just grow one plant, will it produce fruit or does it need a second plant to pollinated? Also does the plant produce fruit in the first?

Mine have started producing fruit they are barely a year old. And they were 2 plants next to each other. Good luck! Started from seeds as well.

They aren't ripe yet when they look like that. They are also called ground cherries and that is when they are ripe when I fall on the ground. They will be more re orange and 🚫 not green still

I recently bought some gooseberries at ALDIs, de-seeded 5, and ate the rest. Into a mesh strainer, and with the water running, squeeze the berry to separate the skin from the pulp with seeds. Then, while water running, press the pulp against the mesh strainer to wash it down the drain while the seeds stay in the strainer. Then when seeds are thoroughly washed, put onto plate or bowl to dry. Then just follow this video.

It would depend on the season (temperature) and water supply. In our case, we had success keeping them in a sunny spot outdoors towards the end of the summer

Depends on your climate. Where we are, our winters are quite mild and these usually survive (barring an extreme frost event). But even in this case they can regrow in the spring time 🌿

I've been growing a few varities of "cape gooseberries", ground cherries and other golden berry type physalis in zone six for a few seasons, so trust me on this. They are very much still unripe at this stage however I would recommend removing from the hull regardless once the hull drys out entirely as it is a little hard to monitor the ripeness of the fruit when you can't see them. They do ripen to a golden orange-yellow. They taste good albeit very sour when green/unripe and can be used in a way not wholly dissimilar from green tomatillo. Edit: and pending container size I have had success with three plants in one pot. I believe it was an 8" pot and I was growing some smaller pineapple physalis variety

@@JerseyAccent653 I also have a bush and they are orange-yellow when ripe. John is correct. I don’t get many from my bush as the moment I stand near it and start checking for ripe ones the chickens crowd around and demand that I share! 😂😂 They’re quite tart but really delicious when properly ripe. Once you’ve had them a few times and know to expect the tartness they’re just lovely. I’ve been slowly collecting as many as I can get away with without creating a chicken mutiny. I’ve been taking them out of the husk, giving them a wash and storing them in the freezer. I’ve nearly got a cup now. I’m planning to try making a curd with them. I think it will be really nice. I’m moving soon so need to collect some seeds from them and plant them in pots to take with me. I want more than one bush at my next place so I get to harvest some regularly for myself as well as treat the chickens 😊

The seeds always damp off after germination for me, I shall try the boiling water suggestion 👍

Bro there cape berries, golden berries are a specific type

You should'nt sprinkle the seeds with soil - they need to placed on the soil uncovered because they need light to germinate.

Good luck getting seeds that actually sprout. Save money, buy seeds that sprout, like carrots or tomatoes.
