The enclosure is not necessary, unless your area prone to whitefly pest...i think my cherry tomato video does show a portion how this was built. Anyway...the trellis is a simple individual stick put in the middle of each pot, around 5 feet long, then I tie a horizontal stick. to stabilize it. The top i just tie a string down to guide the plant

  • @TonysExploration

    You definitely on the right tracks and the good thing is you have 4 seeds. The best part about gardening is always about experiment and observations. I would suggest you try to take a plant and cut off the multiple vine and left only a single stem. The rest 3 seeds, maybe maintain multiple vines. At the end of season, observe which give you the best quality melons .. happy gardening!

    So, im a "first time gardener" besides from helping my dad plant his little projects. I took it upon myself to clear out an already pre-made garden thing that the old owners of my parents house made, and im currently trying to grow some small looking watermelon, some cantaloupe, red peppers, tomatoes, and corn. It seems like a lot, and it probably is for a beginner, but I know I can do it. I just have a few questions. It seems like people like to rip of the male flower to pollinate the female flower, does the male flower actually produce any melons? or is it just the female? Also once my plants start to actually grow, will I have to put in sticks like you did? I want to try and make this garden as useful and yummy as possible, do you have like a "green house" type of style or is it just outside in the open? I did find some quite tall bamboo sticks in the garden when I was clearing out all the grass, and im not sure what to do with them, it seems like the old owners used them since i see some sort of tie on it. I am not sure where or how to make use of it. I also got some more bamboo sticks from my grandmother when i was growing a tomato last year. I might need to use those to elevate the melons once im able to, so no bugs or bad animals get into it. My melon seeds are about 6-7 days old and i see all of them have started to sprout with two little leaves. I havent seen the red pepper yet, so I decided to put even more seeds into some cups and just wait that way, ive also just put 4 corn seeds into the cups, and 4 tomato seeds into the cups. sorry for writing so much😅

  • @TonysExploration

    @TonysExploration

    Жыл бұрын

    starting with melon , yes, you need the male to pollinate the female, and not vice versa. The female have the ovary bulb, which will turn into fruits. You don't have to follow my style , which grow vertically, if you have space, just a trellis platform will do as well. I encourage and recommend a green house, the red pepper and melon are attractive to many type of pest. So a green house definitely increase your chances of success. Gardening is always about the process, you will gain the experience along the way. You definitely have many unpleasant surprise along the way...keep it going. Melon have weak roots, commercial farmer normally graft the melon into the gourd , that is completely a whole new level. Happy gardening.

    @@TonysExploration in my opinion thats an inefficient use of space and time. You can get multiple melons from a single plant if you have space. After the plant reaches maturity it can produce fruit much faster than growing a new plant. I would give each plant 3-5+ fruits each depending on how long your growing season is for them.

    Once you harvest a ripe melon the vine will die. Cantaloupe are strange plants, they're not good at multitasking. If you have a melon developing, subsequent female flowers won't grow into fruit. If you want to have two melons per plant, pollinate the flowers within a day or so of the same time. Then they can grow up together. Not all species of melons will slip from the vine. If yours don't slip, harvest them when the leaves start to die back.
