That looks like one sweet fire truck and yours doesn't look bad either. It brings back memories of driving fire trucks in 1965 at Seymour Johnson AFB. One of the trucks we had was an O-11a, now in the museum at Wright-Patterson.

Now that's an old school truck driver there. Knows how to get things done besides being a steering wheel jockey. Always said a good truck driver need to have many occupational skills. To be a truck driver you have to be a mechanic, secretary, account, a lawyer, and a labor. Good job Steve

I doubt a lawyer given the extreme complexity of laws from state to state. Most professionals know when it's time to hire another professional to do work they shouldn't try and do on their own. A good trucker has made friends with a lawyer and an accountant at the very least to prevent trouble or to bail them out of trouble when they least expect it.

The battery charge indicator is for when its sitting in the fire station, it is attached to a cord called a shoreline for charging. It keeps the truck, radios and lights charged at all times. If its not plugged in, the batteries will die weather the battery switch is off or not. They draw a current at all times.

When hooking jumper cables 1) Red to dead + terminal 2) black to dead - terminal 3) red to jump + terminal 4) black to non battery ground point on jump vehicle. Don’t connect to - terminal. You can damage components on the jump vehicle.

that squeaky noise after he unhooked the jumper cables was air building in the tanks cause when the trucks sit in station they have a 12v pump that keeps the tanks right around 100-115 psi and with the truck being unplugged and not charging the truck leaked down air. Also what probably killed the battery was any flashlight and radio chargers in the cab and any chargers in the compartments, most radio and flashlight chargers are wired around the battery switch so they are always charging.

When you were pulling into gate the fire truck emergency flashers looked like they were already on but dying out from having been left on. For a new fire truck the batteries should have well lasted the trip from the Midwest. It’s only when commissioned radios 24 hour standby minutes modes are activated that fire engines need to shore-lined for 24 hour maximum battery charge. Though there’s a master battery shut off switch, there’s still computer multiplex modules trickle depletes the battery over time for critical diagnostic memory function purposes.

As a new unit, there will always have a gremlin hiding in there. You know the statement,, if it has tires or t ts, there will be problems. Had a coworker tilt a cab, broke a windshield, broke the shifting unit on top of the 13 speed. The hydraulics on a fire unit will not release the locks unless all the way open/ tilted.

When jump starting another vehicle, you should raise the RPM of the “running” vehicle to increase the alternator output. Alternator output is usually dialed down at idle.

I never let Orwell sit at a low idle. It was raised up at the time. I have a cable driven high idle under the ignition key.

Im sorry but trying to keep starting it when the battery is dead as it was kind of dumb. Thats a good way to screw up a starter or a relay. Better off letting it sitting a waiting like you ended up doing.
