Would You Risk A DOT Inspection For Rest?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I start my day in an Indiana Rest Area and head East. I pose the question after seeing an Ohio State Trooper using a trucks place to rest to run radar and accept "volunteers" for a DOT inspection.
Do you think it is right for Police to set up using a place to a trucker to get rest. Would you want to take the chance of harassment to get some sleep?

    There should be a national holiday to honor and appreciate truck drivers since we all need them to have an economy. Thank you for posting this video. This is an awesome self made video documentary that shows a few days in the tough life of a truck driver. I used to be one myself; I encourage others to not ever put them down and give credit to truck drivers for all the stress, inconvenience, and frustrations they encounter on a daily basis. From drivers cutting them off, watching for overhead objects like bridges and power lines, keeping the logbook updated, driving in cold winter and spring thunderstorms, and having to follow strict regulations set by the Department of Transportation, it's not an easy job being a truck driver. For those who wonder why truck drivers in general seem to be frustrated all the time, there is a very good reason why. In this profession, you have to be firm, stand your ground, and not let anyone push you around. I often wave at truck drivers; some give me a dirty look, and others wave back.

    I personally don’t think they should be setting up traps in the rest areas as it might discourage some drivers from stopping there to rest and reset. On the other hand I’ve used locations like that where the DOT would be conducting inspections and I’ve never had anyone bother me while on break. The only time was when I had stopped for my 30 minutes and an officer needed to use my space to conduct DOT inspections. He helped me back out so I could find another parking space, he didn’t bother me about anything else. Edit: After thinking about it? I think I was just lucky..

Better to have the inspection and not be over hours than get nailed for to long between rests. I know Orwell would pass inspection but that might not be the case for others and would definitely be a major factor in making the decision.

The funny part is I live not far from the NY I 81 gate way weight station and that is normally closed. About being over width for the construction zones in Indiana. As I was only ever hauling a reefer, I was never over width, but even at standard width, I used to ABSOLUTELY HATE running through those construction zones in Indiana. And especially at night. It was ridiculous, and dangerous.. Even with a standard width truck there was only a few inches per side to spare between those concrete barriers. Add to that, being tired at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, and the construction zones sometimes running for up tp 60 or 70 miles or more. The stress was awful. You kept a white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel for the duration and you couldn't relax or let your guard down for even a second.

    I agree, but officers see these sites as easy pickings. What doesn't help is that there are quotas they need to meet. Not officially mind you, but in real life officers not only get frowned upon if they don't meet the quota's, it will bite them in the behind during their annual evaluation.

    @@EnjoyFirefighting True, but to go on these resting places with the specific idea of finding some tickets to write out is kind of a bad idea. If this happens often enough truckers might shun these places and keep on driving even though they should take a rest. As it's being said in the video: all these same truckers have to pass the weigh stations, so why not do inspections over there and leave these resting places in peace?

    @@tjroelsma on this side of the pond we don't have dedicated weight stations which all trucks need to go through; There are some few dedicated truck check areas but they are opened only randomly, and yes they have a weight station there as well; Most checks are done on routine patrols. Most large scale checks are carried out by turning a rest area into a pop-up checkpoint with weight station etc

  • @tjroelsma

    @tjroelsma

    @@EnjoyFirefighting I'm from the Netherlands and over here there are very few dedicated weigh stations. Being the small country that the Netherlands is, we don't have many big resting places for truckers, so there aren't that much tickets to score for the police. But besides that most police officers wouldn't even know what to look for, so that task has been delegated to a dedicated police task force. They just drive around and pick trucks they want to check out or they set up large scale checks where every truck is being checked. In the US police and truckers have kind of always been natural enemies, it goes with the mentality over there. Part of it is that truckers see themselves as an independent bunch who see laws and regulations as strangling their profit and part is because police officers have their quotas to fill and what's easier than to fill them in resting places, with speed traps and the likes? That in turn raises the resentment of truckers against the police and the circle has been closed and is now self-sustaining. Different countries different habits.
