Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZread videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

I have never seen a pinion gear fail like that. I still don’t understand why you don’t grease the pinion gear before you install it. I was wondering why you didn’t put in the crosswind gear first. LOL. You know I’m so used to vintage spinning reels with metal cases that these composite housings look flimsy to me even though they’re not. I will never like a reel with no AR override. I think that the manufacturers decided they did not want to go to the trouble of designing and building reels with that override that they sort of made that decision for themselves rather than the fisherman. I have a problem with that practice! Other than this missing override I like the reel. It sure appears that you’ve brought the reel back to life. I’m sure Mario will be happy. Also thank you for the shim discussion. I often have trouble on that front with much older vintage reels. They can be difficult to get in the best alignment. Great video Rick. Did Mario ever explain how that pinion got destroyed like that or did he even know? - Chris

Chris, one of his customers was catching a 32” red fish and it kept stripping off his braided line. To stop that from happening, he kept tightening up the drag. Eventually, something had to give and it was the pinion gear. They hand lined the fish in the rest of the way in. The drag is there for a reason. It was nice to be able to order new parts. That reason above all others sets Penn over the competition in my book. I’ve been able to return 4 Penn reels to service that had catastrophic user induced failures. If they were made by anyone else, I would have been looking at parts reels.

Rick, you make a very good point. Not even Shimano does as well as Penn. I never hear much about Daiwa customer support. I guess for me I have to do my own customer support for all my old vintage reels. As you say - parts reels are my bread and butter. That must have been quite a redfish to pull like that. I sure wish I could hook one like that. When I hooked that giant stingray on the NC Outer Banks I was using one of my big Shimano saltwater rear drag reels spoooled with 20 lb. braid. He nearly took all my line twice but I let the drag do the job it was designed to do. That Shimano rear drag had 14 drag washers in it. It worked perfectly. Some fish you just can’t horses in successfully. Also, I enjoy the fight! - Chris
