Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
You can join Young Martin’s Reels on Facebook@ YoungMartin’sReels | Facebook
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZread videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

That reel look to be a decent nice reel Rick. Like you said, it’s a good starter reel for somebody.

Rick, is that an AR override that I see? I found mysenlf talking to you a lot on this video. LOL. You didn’t do anything I hsven’t done when I screwed up with the order of the way things go back together. What I love about your videos is that you Don’t edit out your mistakes. It helps us who are watching to know that you are human just like the rest of us. I hope this reel holds up throughout the next year. I like the design. I don’t like the plastic bushings. This was a very enjoyable video. Reels like this definitely fill a needed niche within the fishing community. Most folks can’t afford a Saltist or Stradic or Van Staal. I agree with what you said about this reel and its place in the market. - Chris

Yes Chris, that’s and anti-reverse override switch. I’m not sure why people edit out their mistakes but they sometimes seem to. I try to leave mine in place but tell you not to do what I’m doing. I’ve caught 2 nice reds today and Robert caught one too.

Is there an upgrade that can be done to the anti reverse on these?

There might be a non override style that could go in there but I’m perfectly content with this one. I would not try to upgrade a $24 reel except to add lubrication. I might be tempted to upgrade the felt drag washers to carbon fiber but I’m quite content with properly serviced felt drag washers.

Assuming the reel is regularly used, and the fingers are made of quality plastic, and the reel isn't used in temps that make the fingers brittle, I'd expect other critical components in this reel to go out long before those plastic fingers do. And, because spare parts are unlikely to be available for a reel like this, upgrading the AR bearing would be pointless. I once had a spinning reel where the pins in the AR bearing were sprung with small metal springs instead of plastic. All those tiny springs rusted on first contact with salt water. Just like everything else in the $#!@ reel. Point is, you can't reliably judge how good or bad a reel or component is merely by whether it's plastic or metal. Nor can you judge how good or bad a reel is based on the amount of plastic used, or the apparent nature of the metal from which the gears are constructed, or the number of ball bearings, or how smooth the reel feels when you turn the crank in the store, or the impression left by the techno-babble plastered all over the reel its packaging, and marketing fluff. "The Revo SX RKT features an asymmetrical body design and our X2-Cräftic™ alloy frame and sideplate to provide the ultimate balance in weight, strength, and ergonomics. The EXD Concept design allows anglers to maximize their casting performance while our IVCB-6 braking system gives anglers ultimate control with nearly limitless braking options. With 18lbs of Power Stack Carbon Matrix drag and a blazing fast 9.0:1 gear ratio, the SX RKT excels at techniques such as topwater, flipping, and any other technique where speed is key." See what I mean? As with most things in life, every reel is a collection of tradeoffs. A reel that is bad for one application might be excellent for another. For example, some ultra-precise, super-smooth reels are a bad fit for surf fishing. Tight tolerances in certain places trap grains of sand between moving parts, leading to problems. Looser tolerances may allow sand to be pushed aside, or flushed out with a swish in the water. But if you're throwing lures to large mouth bass from a boat most days of the week, that high-precision, slick-as-silk reel might be just the thing for you. You want that smoothness, easy and accurate casting, instant hookup on strike, maybe with racy lettering, graphics, and milling to go along with the sponsor jersey you wear while posing for photos after winning a tournament.

This as usual for you was a very well written comment on this reel. I wasn’t discounting the plastic fingers or suggesting that they should be made with something else. I happen to think they will last a long time with adequate lubrication. Last September I worked on a nice reel, the roller bearings rusted in the AR clutch. That rust destroyed most of those plastic fingers. The point of this video was to see if, like the Sougayilang reel, with a little care, might be a viable reel for entry level anglers. With the mild steel drag washers and unsealed ball bearings, I don’t recommend it for saltwater unless you plan to take it apart and clean it after each use. For fresh water fishing, I think it might work great. It performed well yesterday on a 24” redfish.

Can you back your camera up some, a lot of your video is off screen.

I can’t seem to find a happy point for the camera. If I leave it where I start, everything can be seen but people complain that it’s too far back for them to see the details. When I move it in, I forget that it’s up close and some things are out of frame. I promise you, I do try to keep it all in frame but I often fail at that. Maybe one day I’ll get it perfected but so far, I’m missing the mark. Your inputs remind me to keep trying to get it right. I almost went back and reshot the out of frame parts to correct it but it was second video of the night and I was running behind. That’s what I get for rushing. Sorry.
