Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZread videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

I wonder if you did lubricate those nylon gears just little would it be a little smoother? I’d love to see you fish with this reel! It could be quite enjoyable if not comedic! - Chris

Since it it is a direct drive reel without a spool release, greasing those nylon gears would dramatically reduce the casting distance. I probably will try fishing with this one sometime but I don’t know when.

If I remember, I have to look in my parts box for a more appropriate crank for you reel. The 1970A is a nice reel, but you have to develop a feel for it to cast it without creating a monster bird's nest. I have a 1970 that I occasionally use for bottom fishing, but it needs a one-ounce sinker to cast reliably. I seldom get a backlash with it, but it took a lot of practice to get proficient with it.

Dan, good to hear from you. I was afraid that something might have happened to you. I’m thinking hard about going out with this reel and the Steelhead Spin Fly reel I posted yesterday and giving them a try. I think a knuckle buster might be fun to try out on a big fish. I haven’t tallied to Ken yet but I’m hoping it will be in his plans for me to keep these two reels. I usually fish with 1 oz sinkers anyway so I’m hoping casting won’t be that hard.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 Not catching many, but the ones I've tangled with were monsters that broke my four pound line while I was fishing for crappies.
